Gamespot Reviewer fired over Kane and Lynch review

every single game review prior to release is a paid review/exclusivity deal

Gertsmann was one of the better reviewers at gamespot and one of the few reasons to listen to their podcast. their upcoming shows should be interesting as they're always harping on how fair their reviews are or how they wont comprimise their integrity for the sake of a review. ya well, you will now

this sets a bad precedent in gaming media

Epic failure.

Not that I ever visited Gamespot any way. But of the few times I've been there, he's always been one of the better reviewers. While I would love nothing more than for this to snowball into some serious repercussions for Gamespot, I doubt anything will happen except for some temporary negative press.

Shame.

I'd naively hope that this may push devs into putting more time and resource into like, developing the game rather than whoring out a lot of shit to the media.

so he got fired cuz the game got a low score and that made edios pull out his ads of the game,so causing him fired?

lol, a screenshot of the Eidos forums prior to being cleaned

lol

'very good vagina of cousin' is a winning thread title if ever I heard one :)

While we all know game review's tend to be slanted towards positive endorsement, for some reason, cash or something I dunno, thats no excuse to fire someone over a bad review, not every reviewer likes a game or is required to gush love for it, the point of review is to review it, not compliment it beyond reason.

The whole advertising element and firing him was just inexcusable though.

Never paid much attention to Gamespot anyway, I'll be sure to play even less now.

Gerstmann's an asshole. I'm happy he was fired and I hope this isn't a hoax.

Luckily I remember that I saved this photo a year ago:

Kasavin was the only good thing Gamespot had.

Oh yes, Jeff absolutely hates Zelda, considering he gave ocarina of time a 10 way back when....

So what? This doesn't make him an asshole at all. I feel he gave Twilight Princess a very fair score. I had nowhere near as much fun with it as I did with OOT, and there was even a point where I stopped playing for a couple weeks. Gears of War has an enjoyable single player and a really fun multiplayer. It offers a fresh 3rd person experience overall.

It's nothing to do with Zelda. It's to do with the "tone" of his reviews in general like the original quote says. Zelda was just one example.

He should muster up some sort of enthusiasm even if he hates the console/game. As soon as a Halo or generally any 360 FPS shooter comes out he's giddy as hell. We've known this for ages on the GS forums.

gamers are not known for their winning personalities ..in fact besides sean elliot the most remarkable thing about most "professional" gaming press is that they have any personality at all

Huh? I don't get it. If he doesn't like the game, that should be expressed in his review. Video or otherwise.

I don't get what the problem with his tone is.

I can see why Edios would pull there advertising why pay thousands advertising on the Gamespots home page for the vistor to then look at the game on the same site and see the negative review. As for Gamespot firing the guy it's not doing there integrity any good what little they had left anyway.

Exactly. If the reviewer doesn't enjoy the game much, he can't be expected to carry on a negative review with a joyous expression on his face.

Unless that game is Big Rigs.

I will never read gamespot review again, till they change their policy.

Wait. Wait. Wait. This guy named Jeff gave a perfectly unbiased review that clearly points out the good and bad parts of the game and now Gamespot are going to fire him?

UPDATE: Gerstmann fired for other reasons, not Kane and Lynch review?

One of the team members who worked on the Kane & Lynch ads for GameSpot says that the timing of editor Jeff Gerstmann's departure is a case of coincidence, not cause and effect.

According to this post [UPDATE: the post has since been removed by the author], supposedly written by one of the ad team, Eidos was indeed ticked off, but decided against pulling the spots, opting instead to have the ads retooled to point readers to the game's official site instead of its review page:

"The ads went up and the Eidos brouhaha was settled over two weeks ago. Jeff got fired yesterday. Furthermore, I'd heard a few people tell that he'd already been skating on thin ice for "unprofessional reviews and review practices." I don't know much about that, though, so I can't say one way or the other. My gut tells me that he got canned for larger reasons. Maybe the Eidos debacle was part of it -- I don't know. But I sincerely doubt that Eidos made Gamespot fire him. CNET doesn't kowtow to its advertisers, and I've more than once seen the higher-ups turn away big advertising dollars for the sake of the company's integrity.I think the whole thing is likely a combination of factors, the biggest being poor timing."

tbh the only thing I ever did on Gamespot was watch Jeff's reviews occasionally. I hope Gamespot gets some heat for this from the rest of the big-name gaming press.

Ofc the dude isn't fired over just this incident. It was probably the last straw. Nice way to go though. Gerstmann wins a lot of credibility points through this whole media frenzy. It shouldn't be hard for him to find a new gig. Maybe he can join Kasavin at EA. Which would totally ruin his credibility again, so maybe not.

I don't agree with the reasons they gave for firing him. His reviews were the best out of anyone on Gamespot. He always took the time to explain his opinions as to why a game is great or not, rather than just going by the book.

Unprofessional reviews and review practises? Wait? But isn't Gamespot the ****ers firing him because of pressure from Eidos? Where the **** is the unprofessionality?

That is fricken sad.

Didn't we just hear about that one guy who commented on assassins creed and why a lot of reviewers were giving it bad reviews. Because they were just rushing through it and assassins creed was a game you need to take your time with. Well in that article the guy went onto talk...

He gave an Ubisoft game a bad review. Well Ubisoft were advertising a lot on that page. Well Ubisoft was not happy. But the dude told Ubisoft, "I'm not gonna lie to my readers. You can pull your ad campaign if you'd like. Make better games".

Ubisoft kept there ad campaign and responded with a, "It's all cool bro".

This is the biggest controversy GS related discussion after his Zelda TP review.

Except the fact that seeing zelda fanboys bitching and moaning nonstop at Jeff's zelda review was much more amusing than this.

Well now theres only one good reviewer left at Gamespot.

Excuse me?.

He's a bloody REVIEWER.

He's meant to say it as he see's it, not suck off every games dev's dick who drops a title on his desk.

God do you even know what a reviewer is?.
