Hehe, they look like bulky dipshits. Highly detailed dipshits never the less.

fine. model are highly detailed(exagerated realism!!!!). but how in the hell is it going to help the dev team to improve the game play.

OMG!!! Squat muscular models with no necks and big guns ...must be another generic unreal engine game (yawn).

Anyone else think there is a distinctly homo erotic bent to the entire unreal catalog. Everything in unreal is very Tom of Finland (google at your own risk) ;)

WOW, can't wait for the PC version.

They said 360 exclusive. Which means if anything 4 more years till a pc version :/ I got my 360 just for this so im set.

I love how good graphics now warrants the "intellectual-gamer-rant" no mater what.

Pre-rendered? No way. The real-time footage I have seen looks just as good as that, besides the obvious 16xFSAA. These are clearly in-game assets using the engine with some AA touchup.

It's in-engine and using the same game assets. The edges have been smoothed out some though with some AA.

People can lie. :p

Yeah they can. However, having seen it in motion, those screenshots are in-game.

Here's some shots taken off screen. The quality isn't the best it could be but I think it shows what the 360 and Unreal Engine 3 is capable of.

Those were taken from a live stage demonstration of Gears.

I misunderstood, I was thinking like, the shots were taken while some dude was actually playing the game, not just made with the engine. Although that still doesn't count much for how the game will actually look.

And I am NOT ftl :frown:

It also doesn't make much sense for them to use the models in the first post for actual in-game stuff (i.e. the player avatar), they're overly detailed and will kill performance and for what!? When the player's shooting aliens they're not going to be caring much about individual hair strands on the player's head. Imagine how much work the renderer would have to do when you throw in explosions and weapon effects.

They'll have a toolbox of lower-detailed models for the game itself. Maybe only using the high-res ones for cutscenes.

Epic aren't Bungie. Epic are historically more PC focused anyway. I'd be suprised if it's anything more than a year.
Historically, yes, but times have changed. Unreal Championship games on the Xbox, and now UT2k7 is being developed simultaneously for consoles as well.

Still, I can't see Epic giving up on the PC yet. It'd be very surprising to me if Epic weren't already getting to grips with a PC port for GOW.

Take a look at this screen:

It was taken at the multiplayer booth for Gears of War. Clearly you can see the high level of detail on the model is present even during gameplay. (including the individual hair strands) I don't know why you guys can't believe that this stuff is in game.

Not everybody has jesus in a computer case to play this game :/

Pre-rendered FTW.

WRONG@!

Times change and this game was BUILT from the ground up for the 360. If anything it at least has to be a few years. I am differently not waiting any more then 10 mins on release. Yes ill be on that line...

Yes it is. Frames and camera angles added to showoff the game. I saw the blood in a video, looks just like that.

Yes it does. Most of the time it even looks better.

Pooper.

It's hardly of the same detail in the first couple of screenshots you posted. However, still rather suprising. A shot of the gameplay that wasn't a poorly taken photograph would also be nice for comparison purposes.

A few years? If the engine is worth a damn it won't, developers such as Epic and Valve purposefully develop their engines to make them modular. There are different levels of abstraction in your average game. There's the highest level which is the Gameplay code, beneath that you have the engine code and beneath that you have the platform code. In a perfect world each of these components would be completely independent of the others meaning swapping them in and out a relatively quick process. In the real world it doesn't always work out like that obviously, and changing platforms often means diving into the Engine code. However, Source is a perfect example of an Engine that is modular enough to allow, not only platform and gameplay code to be switched in and out but also new components to be slotted into the Engine. Given the heritage at Epic I'd be surprised if the UE3 is not similar. Meaning that there's as little a dependence on the platform as possible. The Engine is already up and running on the PC as we've seen from UT2007, so what's stopping them from taking the gameplay code from GOW and just sticking it onto the UE3 engine that they're using on the PC? The communication should be the same between gameplay and Engine code if they haven't altered the engine code too much between platforms.

Think of MODs for Half-Life and Half-Life 2, in a MOD you alter the gameplay code, in a total conversion you can strip away the gameplay code and have completely different gameplay mechanics working on the same Engine. It's a similar situation but even easier in Epic's case since the gameplay code has already been developed to work with UE3. Obviously alterations will have to be made since that Gameplay -> Engine -> Platform doesn't always hold up perfectly but no where near "a few years" worth of development.

The difference with Bungie is that they've made the Halo Engine to work on the XBox360 so porting it is a lot harder. UE3 has been developed to work across multiple platforms.

If it does take a few years it's down to bureaucracy and some deal they've got with Microsoft, not because they'll need that amount of time to do it.

EDIT: Infact, I just remembered, Epic's gameplay code is mostly defined through .uc scripts, that makes it even easier since in theory they should be able to recompile the scripts using a different compiler.

Yeah they can. However, having seen it in motion, those screenshots are in-game.

I am not questioning whether or not they are real. Because frankly, I don't care, or have a jot of interest in this game. :p
I'm just saying they don't have to tell the truth.

really great graphics, but like people have said, I really don't like the art direction. Most of the charachters I have seen for gears of war have been these massive, muscular lineman-types in body armor. That doesn't mean that don't still look great :)

Meh, same stuff we've seen before, not much else they can show us from that game

CliffyB once said that the hype was so big anyway that they could get away with not releasing pics of new stuff, because they want people to play the game knowing as little as possible regarding story and levels.

Finally the 360 is moving away from the first-generation games and starting to put out titles that shut the mouths of the sony fanboys. Can't wait for gears of war, should be fun for atleast a week.

GoW looks very pretty but I'm kinda worried, I don't think it'll be that fun in the long run, particulary for a SP person like me.. Dead Rising however.. 10 diff. endings..*Drool*

I would like to see that model moving with an acceptable (doesn't have to be perfect) framerate. That's my biggest concern, that the X360 will have to cheat in movement and distance to maintain fps calmness when all hell breaks loose.

Go watch the E3 live stage demonstrations. It looks fantastic in motion.
