Couldn't resist posting this, thought it's quite fun. The guys at steampowered were toying around with the HL2 console to make the game look ugly - basically, they would just turn all the advanced graphical features.

That looks absolutely in 1996 quality, pixelated and horrible.

If anyone wants to compare (56k warning), here is Doom3 running on a Voodoo2 card.

That, IMO, while looking crap, actually looks decent, except faces/heads. Doesn't look like 1996 - I would say the graphics quality is higher than HL1, but below Quake 3.

At least maybe with those crazy console commands people with a GeForce 2 can run the game :).

Speeking of stuff like this, going back to play HL2 sp again I noticed that weapons dont light world brushes when fired....when did this change >_<?

Its not my system, becuase it does it in garry's mod but not in vanilla hl2...

lol so now were calling hl2 "vanilla hl2"

lol, definately, it sure brings out the geometry though :p

mapping was so much easier in those days

Lol, I agree i do some mapping aswell hard, as hell though.

Just the other day I was wondering what it would be like to play Half-Life 2 with Half-Life 1 graphics. This on the other hand, is perhaps too ugly. :p

No, I disagree I dont think the Xbox version looks THAT bad.

Not sure why it dosn't in Hl2 it never did. Anyway, it does in Cs:S, and all the other mods. Valve said it was easy to do when someone asked once. Anyway never was in HL2, not sure why.

I could totally see that being played on a PSP or some such thing.

HL2: DS?

atleast that screenie has some style to it. almost like a cell shaded hl2 look. hl2 xbox is just shite. :naughty:

pity the guy on the doom3 thread didnt add more pics:rolling:

It's strange that it appears that these graphic reductions do not improve the framerate at all, if not make it worse.

It's a shame if that's so - I was going to suggest a competition for the lowest spec system that is able to run Half-Life at a playable framerate (mimum 30FPS) :p

hah, reminds me of how you can turn the graphics on fear completely down and it looks like quake2. ;)

Haha, I love the Doom 3 stuff. Reminds me of the old Doom's.

I'd play it.. :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu: :imu:

Pfft. Forget HL2 made ugly; Lost Coast made ugly is where it's at.

Lost Coast ugmofied.

Funny thing is that when you try and take screenshots in mat_dxlevel 60 or 70 they all come out as black. At least for me. So I had to use alt+print-screen.

Alright, here's my contribution, with a reference picture on the right :p Sorry for digging up an old thread but I just wanted to show this.

What I did was:

mat_dxlevel 60
mat_picmip 0
mat_filtertextures 0
mat_filterlightmaps 0
r_lod 4

You forgot mat_renderlowresimage (or whatever it was called) and mat_fullbright.
And you should find a way to force HL2 run at 320x240 resolution.

The ones on the church still look pretty impressive (probably due to the streaming effect of the light)

I like the one outside the door of the church, the wall textures look a lot like quake 1!

I think Chrysalid is the winner there, that shot doesn't even look like Ravenholm :). Those LC shots some look like Quake1, but some are actually decent.

And owners of FEAR, definitely try turning off everything in that game. Running on 640x480 with pixel doubling on and everything else minimum/off, it looks impressive. Reminded me very strongly of Quake2 in software mode.

Now, I want to see some horrible Doom3 shots! The ones where it's ran on a Voodoo2 still look rather good - those graphics are more comparable to the original Half-Life than Quake.
