Anyway, back on topic. Usually the favorite starter questions to get talking are the favorites.

Food, band, songs, place to go, personality trait, clothes, underwear color, whatever.

If you don't want to do that; start the generic conversations; what do you think about drugs? premarital sex? <insert band>? computers? intarweb?

Then you could get more creative.

where do you see yourself in 5 years
favorite relative
who makes the best cake
best sandwich you ever had
stupidest story you've ever heard
funniest part of your life
etc etc

There are lots. I suck at starting conversations so what I do is think of words and think of questions that involve those words. Could be totally random too. I also look at things in my environment to talk about.

Hell a lot of mainstream stuff is fine. Just some mainstream stuff is shitty and people latch onto those to bash. Or they throw out names without anything to back it up.

I must be pretty rare then. I listen to Eminem and those which could be consiered mainstream (not going so far as Beyonce or anything though - uncommon mainstream), and I'm definately not like that.

Anyway on topic, sometimes it's good to read up on lots of different subjects if you want to make conversation. Then during topic-changes you could note something of interest, and if that person says "ah yeah I knew that, but what about this...?" then you've got a good conversation going.
