Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society

What is that saying from the Soprano's?
" You try to get out, but they keep on pulling me back in";(

Motoko Kusangi just pwns...

I have 2 ost now and both movies the complete 1st gid and vol. 1,2,3 for 2nd gig^^

I like all the characters, but I think Motoko is the coolest. She does the coolest things. Is it me or does her face keep changing? In the first season, it seems as if the drawers keep changing her face.

they made her breasts larger 2.....and her eyes.

I wish she had black hair. like in the movie

Her hair was blue-ish in the original manga. But it's a rather unimportant detail.

The animation especially during the 1st season was rather uneven, so her face did change slightly between the animators, but if you look closesly enough, minor changes happen even in the best-looking and most expensive animations.

I would have rather had yet another season, or multi-episode OVA, but hell, anything Ghost in the Shell is worth watching.

GitS is in a future Japan set after a Worldwar III where cybernetic augmentation is commonplace and normal humans are becoming a rarity. The cyborg elite are pratically human only because of their 'ghost' (soul), which occupies a synthetic brain in a body which may also be entirely synthetic.

The focus of the story is an anti-terroist organisation called 'section 9', peopled by people of various cyborgisation. There's Motoko, the high-ranking lady-cyborg who takes the lead in the field, theres Batou, a large guy-cyborg, Togusa, an entirely human man (in the movies - the series gave him a synthetic brain) Aramaki, the old-git in charge and a whole host of other cyborgs and pure robots.

GitS: Nice action sequences interspersed with the mains standing around with a stick-up their arse endlessly spouting GCSE level philosophy. Defines the words "pretentious" and "average". Ironically, it proves its fanservice-rooted cheapness early by spending a great deal of time showing Motoko's naked body. For some reason she has to strip naked to go invsible, which is a pathetic excuse for some lengthy voyeurism.Showed it to a friend who ultimately said; "so does anything actually happen". No. English dub Motoko got replaced for later projects along with most of the cast, basically because she had less acting ability than Microsoft Mary. "You have chosen Motoko Kusanagi as the computer's default voice."

GitS Stand Alone Complex: Awesome action with the same philosophy there, but not overloading you and shoving itself in your face with a smug grin that's saying "aren't I ****ing great!!! The characters are given an extra dimension and even a personality (Batou is a f**king wet weekend in Slough in the movies, but he's the comic relief in the series). Personally the tachikoma's won me over in about 5 seconds (they're child-voiced robot tanks who get too intelligent. They enhance the cast around them and are so damned cute!). Good variation with a sufficient ammount of time spent on the main story-arc (the laughing man conspiracy - an elite hacker attenpting to expose nasty goings on in the medical industry and the government) and the otherwise unrelated episodes. Best of all it's 29.99 in the UK for the entire first series. Haven't watched the second GIG yet because i'm waiting for a similar deal.

GitS 2 Innocence: Haven't seen it yet, but I hear it's basically a mildly less pretentious, better looking GitS. You can get both movies in a double-pack for £17

Interesting, interesting. A point though, most of the pictures I have seen of it have been of a woman kneeling on the floor naked with wires producing out of her. I'll see if its in Tesco, everything seems to be on the go cheap there at the moment.

Pretentious nekkidness is mainly not in the series, so I suspect that's from the Movie. Japan may have a reputation for sexual weirdness in some ways, but there are still quite conservative limits on what can be shown on TV. Still, Motoko can't be particularly warm in what she wears in the series :/

meh,its gonna take 100000 years untilt they dub it and realease it in western countries.

BIG SPOILER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE TRAILER IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED LOOKING AT THE 2ND GIG

I'm curious, does every form of media that tries to do something different or say something intelligent come off as "pretentious" and "artsy" to you? I mean, everytime I go into a thread and I see you've posted, I'm almost 99% sure you've said the word "pretentious" in it.

Well, let me do a quick survey for you.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before this post:
- I have said the word "pretentious" in 5 threads.
- I have said the word "pretentious" 6 times.

A thread by thread breakdown:
- Twice in "Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society"
- Once in "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex"
- Once in " Hideo Kojima: games are NOT art"
- Once in "Nintendo Revolution"
- Once in " Valve hav a new character"

By subject:
- Four times in reference to the 1st Ghost in the Shell Movie
- Once in reference to Akira's ending (the same instance as one GitS)
- Once in reference to the naming of the Nintendo revolution
- Once in reference to Metal Gear Solid

Now:
- I have posted 1,715 times.
- I have used the word 6 times.
- So on average, I post the word "pretentious" once every 285 posts.

Did you know that:
- You yourself have used it 9 times
- You have posted 2,914 times so you say the word every 324 posts, only slightly less frequently then I do.

Bearing in mind:
- I don't like your tone.
- You have no basis for the accusations you make, unless you wish to be a hypocrite.

Do you think:
- You could avoid being needlessly confrontational or at the very least, *snip*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
And yes, I'm aware that not only does this post nearly double the number of times I say the word "pretentious", that by its very nature its one big vat of pretentiousness. So sue me. I must work hard to bring my posts in order with your conceptions. Wouldn't want to think that you were unfairly judging someone for some unspecified reason or something.

....I wasn't even trying to insult you guy calm down :|. Seriously, was any of that even necessary? I mean, what the hell. Did I insult you? When I said "everytime I go into a thread and I see you've posted, I'm almost 99% sure you've said the word "pretentious" in it" I wasn't even trying to say you say it a lot, it was an overexaggeration. I was simply curious to what you find pretentious. I think you took my post a little too seriously. My apologies.

Sorry, but your original post doesn't come off as 'just curious'. Overexaggeration never equals friendly or neutral curiosity, it's sneering and belittling and I interpreted that way. By saying "I mean, everytime I go into a thread and I see you've posted [...]" You explicitly make it clear that your expectation is that I'm a narrow-minded idiot who uses a certain big word EVERY single time I post. Where am I supposed to get the under-current of back-slapping friendliness here?

And in actuality, aside from one blatant insult (which I'll edit out now, because it was unneccessary), is my answer not anything more than a simple answer to your alledged curiosity, with the skew that it was obviously written by someone who has far too much time on their hands? If you're going to hold your hands up and say "I've done nothing" because I've gone OTT (in the hope preseumably that the entire mess is seen to be my fault), I have the right to at least point out that actually, I wasn't being all that serious either :p

I'll use my words more carefully then, sorry for the misunderstanding :p.

But since we are talking about pretentious material, I will say GItS 2 is a lot more pretentious than the first one. About half the dialogue is quotes from philosophers. But, I still enjoyed it very much. Even if it is kind of shoved in your face.

Yet to see the second one, though I brought the movies in a set for £16 the other day so won't be long (though I expect i'll watch My Neighbour Totoro first, because it's probably more "my thing" ^^). What i'm least looking forward to is going back to a grumpy Batou to be honest. I found it a whole lot easier to sympathise with the characters when they weren't being so dreary (in SAC). I'm far more open to philosophising when the characters aren't defined by it.

Yeah, Batou shows a lot of character was that was missing in the 1st one. He's got a brooding, anti-social thing going on ever since the Major left. But I'll stop there. Wouldn't want to spoil it all. It's a very interesting piece of work. Even if you end up not liking the plot, the style and the action segments are well done.

i liked the first GitS movie better than the second.

The first was primarily hand drawn with some computer animation effects added in.

GitS 2 was all like, Shit, we can do all sorts of computer animated effects now! And then proceeded to crap all over the fact that the first one was great because it looked like people had actually spent lots of time manually drawing the art.

Another gripe albeit a minor one is that the animators seem to think that animated a 3d car into a 2d environment will look great. It doesn't. Every time i see a poorly animated 3d car pull up or drive off, my skin just itches.

Other than that i love the setting and the series.

I loved the episode in gig1 where they had to protect this one guy in a Hotel and Motoko almost got squashed, that was cool

I'm new to this, so can someone fill me in on what this 2nd gig, 3rd gig thing is about?

That's just how each Television season is refered to. The first 26 episodes were dubbed "First Gig" once the next 26 episodes came out and got called "Stand Alone Complex: Second Gig". There is no "Third Gig" yet, though it was speculated that there would be before Solid State Society was announced.
