I was thinking (after playing Half-life again earlier today), to what extent will Valve incorperate gibbing of the human NPC's? We've seen the pleasant gibbing of Antlions which seemed to hit the spot, but will a good old fashioned grenade blow a combine into sizble meaty chunks for our morbid pleasure?
I understand that the game engine is now physics orientated, but I do hope that they find a nice balance between ragdolls and gibs. As much as I enjoy the fall of my foe, its less satisfying if his demise was caused by a grenade and all he did was fly back a bit. I want to see him redecorate the closest wall whilst depositing his skull and thigh bone neatly into the corner!!

Please Valve. Keep some consistancies!

I doubt that Human-looking enemies will be able to be blown apart, not if they don't want to get the 'M' rating..

this has been discussed umpteen times, try searching

your answer is NO

I'm sure HL2 will be rated M.

No, I don't think so, that would alienate their target audience (well a portion of it :p)

THey need to have a good mix of gibbing and ragdolls... It looks really really good when the two are mixed, much more realistic... painkiller's is a good example of a step in the right direction

HL was rated M, I don't see why HL2 wouldn't.

Not really. Besides, with scenes like chopping former-humans in half with sawblades and rotating fans, do you think it will be anything less than M? Not to mention shrieks of pain chopped up corpses hanging from trees. I doubt it. I would be very surprised if it isn't a Mature game.

I doubt we will see that much gibbing. As you may know, the Combine in this year's movie (in the Beach scenes) was hit directly by a rocket from a *Rocket Launcher*. The only thing that happened was that he flew away from the explosions. Extremely weird-looking flight, imho, too... I doubt he should be cartwheeling through the air & then land over 100 meters from where he was in the beginning.

Like we need more 12 year olds running around online. Make it a M so their Mommy won't buy it. If you parents censor your games you don't deserve to own games.

He wasn't directly hit, the rocket hit the railing. Also he did move appropriately, when you are spinning your limbs stretch outwards.

He still flew a bit far. Well I'm not a leading scientist on this subject but it looked weird to me :)

Woah there! Check the gaming fascist! Who cares what age they are? If they're 12 and they're "running around online" so what? If they're so appalling then you'll have no trouble beating them will you?
The game will, quite obviously, be "M" or whatever (not sure what that translates as over here in fair Blighty but I'm guessing it won't get a proper rating on the front but if it does, it'll be 15)
So far we haven't seen any evidence of gibage 'cept for the Antlions, but then they're insectoid. And it's more satisfying that way.

And the guy hit by the rocket looked absolutely fantastic as he flew through the air, even if it was over the top. One of the moments of the video that made me grin... Muhahahaaa.

I think he was referring to their maturity, not their gaming abilities (read: pwnage)

I doubt the game will have a teen rating, but If you look in the options to can configure it to parental lock so thats the only way i could see it achieiving the teen rating.

It seem that at that age they find the "freedom" of online multiplayer intoxicating. And as such they act like drunken screaming, idiots, who shouldn't be bothering other people anyway.

I will help "noobs" as best I can. Ignorance is fine it's the immaturity that bothers me.

How many people will not get HL2 if it's more graphic? The people who won't get the game don't deserve the game. They are too young to appreciate it anyway. So there. :|

Immaturity doesn't stop at 12, y'know... Many many people on these boards prove that.

If they don't "get" HL2, then that's their problem. It needn't infringe on your experience so why get so elitist about it?

IM NOT BASING This on LEAK info here just careful watching of the E3 2k4 video. YOU CANNOT GIB COMBINE soldiers. the guy on the crane gets hit by a rpg and goes flying ... in one human piece not in loads of pieces.

Gibbing of humans?.... nope

Would a rocket even rip someone apart? Wouldn't it just be a wall of concussive force directed at the body as wave, and not on a certain point?

I know the topic of gibbing has been mentioned before, but I haven't seen it approached from this angle. That's why I brought it up relating to the humans. It was this no-holds barred attitude which added a great deal to Half-life, and I'm hoping that Valve wont let their popularity tone down their act.

I ignored the combine/rocket launcher thing from the E4 Video because that seemed a little fixed to me - just something to make us giggle. I dont expect to see that happen come the final game, but if not then what? Gibbing makes more sense, and is consistant with the original game. It'd be daft to take a step backwards whilst stepping forwards with the ragdolls.

Gibbing or no gibbing, HL2 will be an M rated game. Being in the UK, it'll probably have the same rating as the original.

Uh, it was a playtester actually playing the game...that will most probably be what happens.

I think personally it would just make HL2 too violent, fair enough , some of you like your Soldier of fortune style Gore, but this is HL.

Its more than just gibbing and gore that makes a great game, valve obviously feel that too much of something can spoil a game,, the Antlions gib.. isnt that good enough.

really gory human NPC gibbing would spoil the HL feel for me, I like the minamalist approach it appeals to me more,, Gore can put me off a game if it gets too realistic, and like the other guys said, 'it allows for a larger target audience.

Its not a bad thing that there isnt any human gibbing, other than Zombies.

and another thing,, even if you could gib a human npc, it would look out of place then not to beable to gib,,, say... Alex, or Kleiner,...

dont get me wrong, i like alot of action and reasonable realisim

but... THAT WOULD JUST BE SICK.

you gib lusting sicko's :p

Gibbing should definatly be incorporated into Half-Life 2, not in the extent that it was in HL1 however, where repeated blows with the crowbar would explode a corpse. As hilarious as that was, it wasnt very realistic.

the explosive force that rips a body to bits in actual real life combat is the concussive force of the blast. it is not the flames or smoke or debris but the force of the blast that rips the body apart.

You position a fragmentation grenade under a dead body pull the pin and run and the body will fly to bits fair enough, but thats not the fragmentations that caused the gib, its the concussive explosive force not having no were to escape to and therefore forcing the body out the way as its softer then the ground.

AS for putting my original post in spoiler tags... Since it was the E3 2k4 vid i was refering to i didnt think that it was required to put it in spoiler tags. BUT point taken i will be more careful in future :)

Well, the Fragments certainly help, it's like when you make a tiny slit (representing the fragments) in a plastic bag, if you pull both sides (representing force) then that will rip the bag apart.

Uh, no, it probably wasn't a tester, and he was definately not just "playing the game".. it was most likely a valve employee doing a "glory" demo. By that I mean playing for the audience and doing everything to make the game look better.

Well I know some parts, like the first buggy scene were playtesters, but I doubt the whole thing was.

Their not aiming to get a M rating?

If there's no gibbing of humans then they shouldn't name it Half-Life 2.

Ahem... it half life2.. it has to be perfect, it needs to match up to the 1337ness of the original Half-Life. Sheesh how disrespectful of you.

Since when is the gibbing of Mankind perfection? :p

I don't see what the big draw is for gibbing.
I don't see how it is morbid either. Far from real.

Now if they lost limbs then that would be a different story.

You don't find gibbing hilarious? It's awesome how one second you are talking to a scientist and then BAMB!! He is in pieces all over the floor with a giant chicken bone. Such an awesome transformation.... :*(

Anyone who thinks HL2 will be rated T is kidding themselves. :rolling:

The ESRB goes beyond blood and gibs for M ratings. Realistic physics = Auto M. If I run over a Combine with a car and the rag-doll reacts realistically, M.

If I can pick up a dead body with a manipulator + ragdoll, automatic M. If the blood does not look cartoony, M.

FFS Deus Ex Invisible War got rated M because of the things you could do with the rag doll. And that game had no gibs, and blood looked like red blobs painted in MS Paint.
