I'm running out of things to read, so I figured I'd see if anyone here has any advice on what I should read next. I'm mainly interested in fantasy/scifi books.

Been threads like this already :p

Anything by William Gibson, the Wraeththu series by Storm Constantine, the Hitchhiker's Guide series by Douglas Adams, all the Ender's Game series by Orson Scott Card, all books by Chuck Palahniuk

Robert Heinlein is by far my favorite sci fi author. Stranger in a Strange Land is one of his best, also Starship Troopers.

I'm currently reading 'the curious incident of the dog in the night-time' by Mark Haddon, anyone who has read it will know the genius behind it. Awesome stuff.
(not sci-fi but whatever!)
Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman, quality

Yes, Ender's Game is a must!

I absolutely LOVE Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets

1984, by George Orwell
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, by Douglas Adams

Absolutely loved those books.

The Hobbit is also extremely good.

Anything by Dean Koontz. I'd recommend Phantoms, Lightning, and Intensity.

oh obviously the lord of the rings if you haven't yet

Read all three of em a while back. Great books.

Other books I've liked:
The Chronicles of Prydain (A quintet of books)
All of R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books (The ones I've read, atleast - Paths of Darkness and books 1 and 2 of the Cleric Quintet)
Starwars books (Yes, I'm a nerd, shut up)
Etc...

Star Wars books arent all nerdy, there are some rather good ones.

Read Neil Gaiman (sp?) stuff. Trust me. American Gods is one of my favorite books. Also anything by Kurt Vonnegut. Oh, and obviously Hitchhikers Guide. See my sig.

1984 is by far, the best book I have ever read. When you finish [if you decide to read it] go for any of Tom Clancy's books. (Red Storm Rising = the best)

1984 OWNZ!!

All the Dune books by Frank Herbert.Grestest Science Fiction books ever created. Here is the list of best books (and not just by me):

1) Dune Series
2) Ender Series
3) Foundation Series
4) Hitchhiker

Books? What is this thing you speak of?

The Pillars of the Earth - by Ken Follet

Believe me, if any of you read this, you'll agree, it's the best book ever. 1050 pages of medievil epic madness!

Are you looking for something light or something heavy?

I'd have to suggest the Halo books... unless you arent intersted in Halo. They are good action filled suspence novels. The only one that wasnt good was "The Flood", only because it is pretty much the whole Halo game. Thats my suggestion.

Brave New World By Aldous Huxley-I'm in the middle of it now and its a very crazy thought-provoking book.

Jeez, you are just plugging the shit out of 1984 :D

All books by Dan Brown rule. Angels & Demons is probably the best, Deception Point is awesome too.

I didn't really dig Digital Fortress. Angels and Demons is the shiznit though.

I've read Angels and Demons, and the DaVinci Code. Both were great. I got about halfway through Digital Fortress and lost interest--which isn't very common for me with books.

Anyway, I went down and bought the following books:

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 1)
A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 2)
A Storm of Swords (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 3)
The Cleric Quintet, Collector's Edition (All five books in one)

Good call, I forgot about those. Excellent books, but not for the light of heart. Major characters get killed off rather haphazardly. The "Order War" series is also pretty good.

Okay, also just looked through my book collection. Tad Williams Otherland and Green Angel Tower series are good. Marion Zimmer Bradleys Exiles series is pretty cool too.

edit: 200 posts! w00t!

I don't mind major characters getting whacked. I'll check out the Order War series at some point.

Also, quick side note for anyone making recommendations to me, I prefer long series of books, or long (Very long) books. I hate getting involved in a storyline/universe that cuts off at 300 pages.

Taking a quick look at all of the books I own, very few of them are stand-alone books - The New Jedi Order (20+ books), several of R.A.Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books, Lord of the Rings (all three books), etc...

See I started with Digital Fortress...so it only got better from there...because from Digital Fortress I went to Angels & Demons, Da Vinci Code, then Deception Point.

Angels & Demons and Deception Point were top notch

Anything from Phillip K. Dick, A.C. Clarke, William Gibson (Neuromancer is best), George Orwell or Tom Clancy....

Heh, 1984 followed by Tom Clancy? Very po-mo, I must say. Yeah 1984 is teh bomb, but you'll only get the most out of it if you concentrate on the larger political themes - the idea of the socialist revolution being the last in a historical cycle of revolutions kind of shocked me. There's a decent discussion of it on Wikipedia.

Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars) are very long and very immersive. Lots of very interesting technology, political, and cultural ideas. And some very exciting action sections. Epic. Should be a series of movies or a superior TV series.

My favourite book I've read recently was Midnight Cowboy by Leo James Herlihy, the film of the same name was made from the book. Very moving, very poetic character depiction.

The Shining is my favourite Stephen King book. Proper scary.

I'm reading What Should I Do With My Life by Po Bronson. Not fiction, but a good read.

I read The Magicians Nephew and The Wizard of Oz a while ago. They're okay.

Damn, I don't read enough books. Bloody internet.

Lee Child's 'Jack Reacher' books are teh bestest

Killing Floor
Die Trying
Echo Burning
Tripwire
Without Fail
The Persuader
The Enemy
The Visitor
One Shot

Read them all, read them now. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED.

Ok, you want something besides the best book ever.
Tom Clancy:
1: Red Storm Rising [almost ties with 1984 for best book ever award]
2: Without Remorse
3: Patriot Games
4: The Hunt For Red October
5: The Cardinal Of The Kremlin
6: The Sum Of All Fears
7: Clear and Present Danger
8: Executive Orders
9: Rainbow Six
Read them in that order. There are other books, but they're all just sort of..meh.

The Bourne Identity was good if a little bit confusing. [Yes it was a book before it was a movie] If you like scary books I suggest really anything by Stephen King. Personally I found The Shining and Misery to be the best out of the several I've read.

I'm not really sure about it, 1984 was a really powerful book, I agree, but the writing was rather clumsy to me. The plot isn't original, by the way, it was taken from Yevgeny Zamyatin's We, I've heard its better than 1984, but I've never read it before so I can't comment.

Isaac Asimov's Foundation series was also rather enjoyable :D

1984 isn't just about the plot, you know. I don't think it's cited as a great literary work because of the story. Heck... that's kinda like saying Star Wars is a bad samuari flick because it rips off Hidden Palace.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the worst comparision I have ever made.

Angels and Demons is edging towards Sci-Fi. I'll let you know what its like.

It more of a Religous/Crime/Sci-Fi to be more precised
