Google Chrome launching tomorrow

The features and other things will come. The one big thing that I'm missing atm is probably the fast search window that FF had in the top right corner. I was always that for dictionary.com, wiki, imdb etc. however more screen given over to display and less to meaningless borders is a big plus even on a 22" screen.

This browser is ****ing righteous.

Besides the unfinished aspect of it, including add-ons and custom skins colors, this is exactly what I've been wanting. I hated the fact that the other browsers take up half the ****ing screen with useless shit.

Incognito mode sounds great in a time when freedom to privacy is a major concern, with 'wire-tapping' and spy bullshit going on.

It's faster than the others too! Can't wait for the final.

Incognito mode doesn't hide you from others over the internet, it hides you from others using your computer. It simply prevents cookies, history and stuff being stored, it doesn't encrypt data before it sends out requests or anything. It's like the Distrust addon for Firefox.

Not having the top right search bar doesn't free up vertical space, just makes the address bar longer. And yeah, I miss it too.

Somebody help with this error I'm getting *cries* google doesn't want to. I checked their support group and someone else is having the same problem.

Slim, sleek, speedy, and an alternative to IE now, surely. Will definitely get into this for further testing.

Weird, I see absolutely no performance gain in the Javascript-heavy Google Maps. In fact, Firefox 3 seems to be a little faster even.

EDIT: In fact, the Javascript of Chrome isn't any faster from the benchmarks I've done. Does it even compile it to native code or is the VM purely for sandbox reasons?

I ran two tests: One in Google Chrome, then one in Mozilla Firefox. Using the comparaison tool, it stated that Google Chrome was 2x faster and it listed significant difference next to most of the results.

I really like the layout of the browser and it seems just as fast as any other browser. So I approve.

Going incognito doesn't affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
Websites that collect or share information about you
Internet service providers or employers that track the pages you visit
Malicious software that tracks your keystrokes in exchange for free smileys
Surveillance by secret agents
People standing behind you

lol'ed

i found myself missing my firefox addons very quickly, but this is neat.

Google certainly built up an image that they are the good guys on a mission to fight evil (M$) and in the early days that's certainly how it was. But now they are nothing more than a huge multi-billion dollar corporation that will soon rival microsoft. I know some people don't want to hear that but that's already become evidant in their monopolistic methods.

I agree to a degree. (poet and I didnt even know it) Even if they are this empire of software, as long as their stuff doesnt have all the problems that microsoft does, im happy to use it.

I can't tell if I like chrome yet or not, I literally just downloaded it so don't hold me to that. Have you experienced problems with it yet?

Google Chrome can't use the Google Toolbar, which ironically is one of my must-haves for a web browser.

I'll be sticking to FF3 for the time being, but I'll test out Chrome a bit more and keep an eye on its development.

One thing I don't get, Firefoxes stored passwords should be secure but when Chrome imported my FF stuff it could read them.

it's built into the omnibar. Come on. This is google. You think they would leave google search out of it? :p

but I agree it's missing some stuff atm.

anyway, I was using it on my laptop, and I miss it's speed and screenspace. I'm going to download it for my desktop now.

This link belongs in this thread I think:

err no shit. I don't use the Google Toolbar just for google searches, I could use FF's address bar or top-right search bar for that.

what do you use it for? (BTW I put a smiley because I realized I'm a dick)

/apologizes

edit - I misunderstood anyway, I thought you meant google search bar, which is not the same thing as google toolbar

I'm loving this browser, specifically how minimalistic it is, I want to browse the web not use addons on a web browser! Feels faster then Opera too

I'm most interested in the "new process for every tab" bit.

IE8 has this as well.

Glad to see Chrome is using it as well, since it's so nice when one stupid tab crashing doesn't bring down the entire browser!

Anyways, I'm actually fairly impressed with the browser so far. It's extremely snappy.

It also has minimal screen real estate, and devotes as much as it can towards the actual websites, and less for its own UI! It's really nice.

I was very skeptical of this, and Google has a really nice foundation actually. Now if they can just keep polishing, and start adding more features to put it on par with IE8 and FF3, then it will be very solid browser.

Hopefully this continues to stir the innovation in the browser market and helps push MS and Mozilla to keep innovating more for their browsers. :)

For a google search, type a ? into the location bar... for images, type img.

what do you use it for?
One click google search, site search, image search, news search, gmail search, custom created searches for wikipedia, tf2 wiki, valve wiki, urban dictionary and more. Google bookmarks (I like to keep my bookmarks online), spellcheck (although this was added to FF), 'Up' button for moving up a sites hierarchy (for example one click from this page takes me to http://www.halflife2.net/forums/ and another click then takes me to http://www.halflife2.net/) and a webpage text search which is a bit more useful than FF's ctrl-F one.

No problem.

'?' seems kinda useless because it seems to search google if what you type isn't formatted as a web address in the first place.
'img' I can't seem to get working.

Anyone know a way to turn off the link pop up in the bottom left. It's kinda bothering me.

Love it and I don't use adblock anyway. Everything is simple and fast. And pulling tabs out to their own windows = win. Unless bugs start crawling out this is staying as my default.

after using it on my desktop I've got a lot of gripes.

-it doesn't seem to remember my text size settings like FF3. CTR+mouse wheel.
--also it seems to be too big or too small text sizes when doing that.

- if you save an image to your HDD, it keeps a huge window open, requiring you to click X to close it. Maybe there is a way to make that window close automatically?

-the skin color is extremely distracting. I have a dark theme, and it's very bright.

-the pop up info thing in the bottom left corner is brilliant, but the color is very distracting. needs darkness. I just have to be able to read it if I need to. I don't normally need to pay attention to that. It keeps grabbing my attention the way it pops up and morphs in size. It's awesome and non-obtrusive but I'd rather it was less bright.

The installer keeps locking up. It locks up when importing my browsing history, and it crashes explorer. Got it to work without history though.

Seems to be the little things that FF3 has all over this browser. I absolutely love the streamlined interface, and it seems faster, but that may be because it's missing things I want.

As it stands right now, I can't use this.

Virus, send them reports. You can make suggestions as well as bug reports if you wish.

Hm, I've been experiencing some problems while viewing videos on youtube today. The browser kept coming to a halt every now and then for a few seconds, or the sound played but the video was stuttering. A few minutes ago the browser completely stopped and I had to close the process via the Windows task manager, cause Chrome didn't respond and I couldn't bring up it's task manager.

EDIT: Hahaha, I just noticed "Statistics for nerds" in the lower left corner of the task manager window. :D

I am getting the same error message

I like it so far, just needs more features and plugin/addon capability. Where do I go to submit suggestions for Chrome to Google?

OK Vegeta, I got mine to work

In Windows XP, Google Chrome installs under \Documents and Settings\<user>\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application\

In Windows Vista, Google Chrome installs in \Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\

Since I use Vista, I wandered into C:\Users\{my username}\AppData\Local\Google\Update\Download\

There are several folders with long Hex names. I found chrome_installer.exe, and double clicked it. The remaining install went smoothly :afro:

That's the beauty of open source! One can add the features they want to it! You don't need to request a feature to the Goog.

I used it for probably 20-30 minutes, and my only gripes are:

1. To edit your bookmarks, you have to do it one by one instead of an organizer like FF3 has which makes that one hundred percent easier.

2. I'd really like to have more options in the right click menu such as reload and stop.

That's all I have for now after my use, but I'm sure I'll find more.

virus, try holding cntrl and use your mousewheel...it should enlarge or diminish the size of the text in any given website.

The inclusion of Kiddie Pr0n Mode is... baffling. Why add sneaky browsing as a feature? If Gary Glitter doesn't know how to wipe his browsing history, why do it for him?

I mean come on, even the icon is wearing the same coat ffs.

Cnet tested how other popular browsers stack up vs Chrome for javascript, and the results were extremely substantial:

And here's one with Opera from Axioblog:

I notice that nothing on Facebook works with Chome... :(

Top right on the folded page tab, under bug reports 'something's missing' category I suggest ;)

Why add sneaky browsing as a feature?

Looking for a new job during your lunch hour? Online Banking at work? etc etc though obviously hiding the pr0n trail is the main one. Plus if yesterdays history is still there for the girlfriend she probably won't give you those suspicious looks and start doing Avi searches on the computer ;)

I'm loving it. Already set it as my default browser. I'll only use FF3 when I need the extensions. It was pretty buggy anyway, not closing properly when I wanted to exit it.

I like it without plugins. It's lightweight, something modern browsers have forgotten to put in their feature list.
