The real reason I'm writing this post is because I keep hearing that the Half Life story has to come to an end in Half Life 3. I just don't understand why anyone thinks this? I bring up James Bond because he's now been in 23 AWESOME movies, they just keep getting better. So why does Gordon Freeman have to defeat the Combine in Half Life 3? For all we know, he might have countless battles in front of him, and maybe the Half Life saga will end down the line, in Half Life 15. Freeman might have to battle through 15 insane worlds (15 games) until he has a slim chance to defeat the combine. Or perhaps even after the Combine are done, it can just keep going forever, each time the G-Man has a new mission for Freeman, just like MI6 does with Bond... every few years. I just think that this is a great franchise VALVe has going, and I doubt we will see the end of Gordon Freeman, any time soon. They are gonna stretch this for as long as possible.. They can always add to the story, and make another one... pretty much indefinitely if they choose.

People are just assuming it's going to be a trilogy.

Well, Hl1 was fighting against the Xen, Hl2 is fighting against the Combine...yeah, VALVe could be on to something here :E .

A great game is best kept short.

too many sequels will make the storyline too draggy, and soon it'll bore ppl to death. As much as we all hate to see half life end ( that may be in hl3), i think valve would not want to be stuck with the halflife project for 2/3 of their career

Most bond movies are mediocre at best. Keep Half-Life to a trilogy, thanks.

good games shuld be long! keeps u entertained for longer

Really? There must be some other movies series with the same name that's not getting worse and worse, and more like self-parody with each release, that I haven't seen yet. :p

Eh, make fun of my comparison all you like. I can tell you one thing, they wouldn't make 23 James Bond films if the majority of people thought they sucked... They continue make them every few years because people like them, they pay to see the film, and they make money.

Same thing here with VALVe, they have a franchise called Half-Life. They just aren't going to throw it away with one more game, I gaurantee you. In the end, it all comes down to dollars. Valve's a company, like any other, they've devoted years into making these games and building this franchise. Half Life has a huge following, and if Half Like 3 does well, they'll make a Half Life 4, and so on. When people stop buying the game is when they'll stop making them. For the meanwhile, they've got you, and your dollars, hooked.

I don't know why anyone would want it to end in HL3 anyway, this is a great series, the best video game ever made. As long as every Half Life is the best game ever made, they will make a sequel to it, trust me.

Gordon might not be anywhere near to finishing the Combine, whose anyone here to say? It's like speculating at the end of HL1 what would come in HL2. Would any of you have guessed at the time that this is the route the game would take? Probably not, so everyones guesses that theres only one more game, and everyones theories as to this or that, could totally be wrong. We'll have to see.

its cos half life is a story that has been written and has 3 parts

wrong and wrong. The story writer apparently doesn't even know the ending yet, and they dont know how many it will take to conclude the Halflife series...you are assuming its a trilogy...we must keep the possibility of more than 3 alive, as its highly likely. This series makes big money. x10 and you have ten times the amount. Valve are just another company

And here I heard from people that it was officialy going to be a trilogy. YAY THERE COULD BE MORE. Just hope we won't have to wait till the tenth one to figure out wtf is going on.

well...as much as i'd personally like to see 8-9 games in this series i don't know...maybe it is a trilogy.. perhaps there will be a 4th as well but as mentioned in "Raising the Bar" the book, Marc Laidlaw hasn't even planned the series that far so its anyones guess how long this series will be.

i guess i just have a hard time letting go of good things.. :(

every bond movie will entertain the average joe. alot of guys find gadgets neat, alot of guys find cars cool, alot of guys like hot chick, alot of guys like guns. obviously not the case with nerds.

James Bond was never that good to begin with. They don't make them because the "majority of people" think they're great. They make them because they're making enough of a profit.

And in closing: look at what happened to Star Wars.

I, personally, would rather have Half-Life as a cool, fun, satisfying sci-fi story/game rather than an ever-swelling money-making growth.

I would rather go ahead and have the plot resolved in Half-Life 3, maybe tack a couple of expansion packs onto it, then move on to SOMETHING ELSE. That's right folks, SOMETHING ELSE.
