'Grand Theft Auto IV' tops $500M in week 1 sales

"Grand Theft Auto IV" raked in more than $500 million in its first week in stores, selling more than 6 million units worldwide, the video game's publisher said Wednesday.

The title sold about 3.6 million units on April 29, its opening day, bringing in roughly $310 million. This is $10 million more than what Microsoft Corp.'s "Halo 3," another blockbuster game, took in during its first week last fall.

Not meaning to sound like a fanboy or anything, but I wonder how it would've stacked up against Halo 3 had it remained a PS3 exclusive.

In 1 week that is amazing, obviously things will drop off significantly now but looks like they're already into the profit margin nicely! I read about the 6 million pre-orders but imagine how it will continue to sell as word of mouth spreads & the online play becomes more prolific...

It's not unexpected. The hypes been insane, but as Glen rightly points out the drop off is going to be significant. Halo 3 sold 8.1 million copies and that is the 360s must have title. IV isn't going to ship much beyond that 360 wise I suspect. Ultimately I expect they will surpass San Andreas in terms of sales, but it's going to take time, and with the $100 million dollar development costs, they are going to want to ship as much as they can to pay for the next game.
