Over at HL2Fallout.com, one of their members (Nav) visited Valve last week and got this little bit of information from Gabe and the boys:

Valve plans to continue to add content to HL2 after its release. The new content will be FREE and the more people go on to Steam to download the new content, the more new content they will add. I will imagine that retail customers will be able to download the new content as well.

Now can I confirm that this lad is telling the truth? No, I can't but he did go to Valve last week. If this is the case, then this is truly awesome!

Indeed, if that's the case, awesome.

I wonder what content are they talking about. My preference would lie with singleplayer maps definitely.

I believe they mean new maps, levels, weapons, etc. I know they already mentioned they would keep Source updated with new technology but I believe this goes beyond that.

I wonder if this means that 'exp packs' will be free? I've always expected valve to turn around and say "If you buy HL2 off steam you get all future HL2 stuff free" but if you buy retail you don't.

I hope he's telling the truth.

It'd be an awesome thing for Valve to continue the story, or just create entire new ones. (With extra maps)

Maybe.. Blue Shift.. 2..? :|

Well, it would be very unfair to people who can't buy through Steam because Steam doesn't work properly, they have a traffic limit or low bandwidth. Not everyone can download over 4 GB of data.

That is why I would assume they would release standalone exe patches and the like for the big stuff.
They have not done it to this stage though..

I would assume that those that bought retail would get it as well....they would have to. If valve gave it to people that bought over steam then there would be VERY VERY angry people out there. Me being one of them

They wouldn't add on to HL2, because they are saving that for $30 expansion packs (simple logic). Since HL2 has no distinct multiplayer that only leaves us with CS:S updates. :| That isn't so great now.

No no no - they told Nav specifically that it's Half Life 2 material that would be released. Of course, that could all change but I'm just going by what Nav said at HL2Fallout.

I thank you for pulling that right out your ass.

YEah I would imagine that the updates would include a Halife2 multiplayer (The real one :P), or just updates to the graphics.... And stuff. who knows.

I want the promised HDR, even if it makes my PC weep.

Dang, that's really cool. Especially the bit about them dynamically adding more content after the game is released.

No. No, no, no, no, no. Nnnoooo. Enn Oh.

What the hell is wrong with Half Life 2 fans? Doesn't matter how many times they are told no, they just don't get it.

There is no Half Life 2 themed multiplayer. Valve have no plans to make a Half Life 2 multiplayer. It isn't going to happen.

Please, please tell me how I (or Valve for that matter) can make this any more clear.

Gabe could paint it on himself and make a webcast of him jumping up and down while chanting "There will be no HL2 multiplayer" repeatedly while Doug Lombardi skywrites it over Seattle?

actually elephant i believe it was, "There is no HL2 themed multiplayer" Not "We have no plans to make an HL2 themed multiplayer"
They don't mean the same thing.
The first one means that, when the game is released there will be no HL2 themed mulplayer. The second one means that valve hasn't started up an idea for an HL2mutliplayer.

That does not mean valve wont make one.

We kinda already knew that Valve would continue adding stuff to HL2... but regardless, they kick ass for doing it.

Wrong.

In a recent interview with Doug Lombardi (no, I don't have a link, shut up) he was asked if there is a basic DM or TDM mode in the works at Valve and Doug told the interviewer that no HL2 multiplayer is planned.

It's not going to happen. Get over it.

Edit- Okay, just because I hate morons such as yourself and love to prove you scrotums wrong, I got the link.

HomeLAN - Will there be basic Half-Life 2 deathmatch and Capture the Flag modes released by Valve at some point or will the mod community have to create those products?

Doug Lombardi - Right now, we do not have DM or CtF modes for HL2 in production.

And don't you even dare to start with that "but he said 'right now' so that means they will do it later!!!1!1." Let it go. It's not going to happen. Ever.

I woulda believed if even if you didn't have a link.

I personally believe that valve wont make an HL2 multiplayer.

But that does not mean THEY COUDLN'T OF STARTED PLANNING 1 SECOND AFTER THAT QUESTION!. Don't call me a moron, im not a moron. Im a dumbass, GET IT STRAIGHT.
God damn morons...never relize that im a dumbass..

I doubt they'd be that generous, and rightly so. Seriously, I wouldn't expect anything hugely ground-breaking to be given away free.

Shut the f*ck up and stop being such a self-righteous condescending wanker to anyone who disagrees with you in the slightest. You come across as some Maddox-esque whiner, except Maddox displays wit and humour, whereas you display all the patience and cleverness of an angry toddler. It's perfectly possible to convey whatever points you try to make with an ounce of courtesy and intelligence but that seems not to have occurred to you. Until you do, all your snot-nosed retorts will have no merit whatsoever. Grow up.

As long as Valve doesn't start charging subscription fees for Steam, I will be one happy camper.

One-time fees for expansions are fine, but I don't EVER want to see subscription fees. Valve will make plenty of money off HL2.

Valve dreams big, but I doubt they would be able to keep this up very long, if at all. So many things about HL2 and Steam have been dropped along the way. Case in point, the whole subscription model thing. At this point I just want them to finsh CS:S, then we can worry whether they add new content to HL2.

Well said. Infact, I couldn't have said it better myself. Elephant is such a well...a-hole to say the least.

el chi and Kiva128, you must understand that I don't give two shakes of an old mans dick if you like me or not. I have been trying to get a point across to these butt pirates for months, and even now after Valve has finally admitted that not only is there no HL2 multiplayer, but there is also none planned, they still hold onto that stupid idea that Valve somehow gives enough of a shit about them to make them a DM mode after the release.

For the record, I don't try to be witty or funny on internet forums. I leave my humour and charm for those that I speak to in real life.

Well that's real positive.

In the review that you posted, he says they don't have one in production.

MUCH different than "We don't have one planned."

I am thinking there will be a HL2 mulitplayer. Released after HL2.
