* The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic, which we believe is Croatian or Serbian.
* Multiplayer is set to be announced.
* You can use a cellphone to call your contacts.
* Apparently there are no planes because there is only one city in the game.
* You have a lot of choice over what you want to do. You still have to take orders from people during missions, but you can also choose how you want to spend your time, e.g "I want to hang out with him, or her... I want to go see this guy 'cause he always has something to do..."
* The story unfolds in a number of different ways. R* is giving people more freedom, more choice and more sense of control over their destiny - the structure of the storyline is quite different to previous games.
* The demo which Game Informer played was for the Xbox 360 version of the game.

That sounds awesome and I must say that the Multiplayer announcement will be insanely awesome. And more freedom?? Wow, this should be even better than I imagined!!

Sounds more like GTA III than SA, which is a very good thing.

Hopefully you can go into every building.

Interesting, sounds like they are improving the gameplay muchos about time they did proper Multiplayer, the unoffical mod ones really suck.

No planes? ****, the planes were fun as hell in SA. And only one city? I didn't like San Andreas that much, but the best parts were exploring the desert/countryside with a motorbike. Ah well.

Edit: Scratch that, apperently the demo that the people from GI played didn't have any planes and was only one city, not the actual game.

Hate to be cynical...but..."same old same old".?.?

The only logical step for this series is MASSIVE multiplayer. This single player crap is all the same over and over. I don't care about these little tweaks to the gameplay...which is what it sounds like from early reports. But, whatever, never been a big fan of the series.

Singleplayer is what GTA is.
A fairly engrossing singleplayer experience.

This looks like it has the potential to be the best one since Vice City.

I like the idea of focusing on one city. This way they can really explore new gameplay options without having to focus on a million other little things. Once they perfect a one city game, they can move on to multiple cities when they release GTA South Africa

When they say no planes in the same sentance as 'only one city', that means you can't board planes to go abroad, right? Surely planes will be flyable, aswell as helicopters? I sure hope so.

Sounds awesome anyway. GI played a 360 demo, then? Sweet, hope it comes out soon!

No planes...lame, and it sounds a lot like Saints Row...lame! Really not to impressed so far granted we still know very little.

Some updated info:

# The protagonist's name is Niko Bellic - an Eastern European immigrant who has come to Liberty City to live the "American Dream."

# The GTA 4 equivalent of the Statue of Liberty is called the Statue of Happiness, and DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is known as BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass).

Game Informer
# In Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar have recreated 4 of the 5 boroughs in New York, as well as part of New Jersey. Broker is the GTA IV equivalent of Brooklyn, Manhattan is now called Algonquin, Queens is now Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, and New Jersey is Alderney. The map is smaller than San Andreas, but considerably more detailed. No countryside or desert, we are led to believe.

# Pedestrians are far more realistic in GTAIV than in previous GTA games - they sit on benches, smoke cigarettes, read books and generally act like any real pedestrian would in the middle of a street.

# The screenshots in the preview are not representative of the final quality of the graphics, Rockstar insist. The game will only look better as the release draws closer..

# Niko was persuaded to move to Liberty City by his cousin Roman, who claimed to be living a wonderful life there with two beautiful women, fifteen sports cars, and lots of money etc, but he was infact telling a lie in order to hide his own failures. Roman is the only person you know in Liberty City at the beginning of the game, and he becomes one of your major connections at the start. Niko is a tough character whereas Roman is friendly. Roman is heavily in debt and a lot of people are after him - he needs Niko's support. They are constantly bickering.

# The demo (which was played on Xbox 360) begins with Bellic standing inside of the taxi depot, which Roman operates in the borough of Broker in a converted industrial garage. Roman works at a cluttered desk in a shabby environment, and at this point the graphical improvements are extremely evident. Bellic walks to a brownstone house in Broker, where he pushes open the door and pulls out his pistol - the house however, is not occupied.

# As Bellic walks, you can feel the weight behind each step he makes. Variations in the terrain cause realistic changes in the walking animation. The physics have also improved and character movements are more realistic.

# Multiplayer in Grand Theft Auto 4 is set to be announced, though Rockstar are remaining tight-lipped about what it involves...

# You can use a cellphone to call your contacts.

im excited to see what they have in store for multiplayer
im thinkin they will do co op and hopefully some sort of 16 player mission based mp or something

I like the sound of that. Too many 3rd person shooters suffer from floaty walking (looking at you Max Payne).

"You can use a cellphone to call your contacts"

Phone a friend anyone? There's gotta be a co-op mode in this.

New info sounds good. Shame about the planes but I use helicopters more :) As long as they aren't cut then I dont care.

Perhaps only a downgrade in boxes to tick on the back of the box. I'd much rather Rockstar improved on the tried and tested gameplay of GTA3 (better vehicle handling, physics, combat, ai etc) than going down the San Andreas route and just adding more and more content. Less clutter and more kicking down doors, offing a few mofos, and then speeding away in a jacked super car with the pigs screaming behind you in hot pursuit.

I agree. SA was just too complicated. There was too much to do and really detracted from the whole experience imo. GTA3 was simple, yet so much fun.

Exactly.

For all the stuff SA added to the game ... it really didn't do a whole lot to increase overall enjoyment. Although the map was a great improvement ... but totally under-used in the games missions. I mean, CJ was an alright character for LA, but he was totally out of place in the country, San Francisco, the desert, and Las Vegas.

This new city should be great though. They can make all the huge maps they want but just like SA they won't be able to fill it up and fully utilize it. This is definitely a step in the right direction.

I hope they make me 'feel' the city in the way that Vice City did and San Andreas failed to do.

I mean, I memorised VC, I knew exactly where to go, and i could seriously feel the pulse of the city. San Andreas? Too many cities, not enough quality... lifeless. Well, not lifeless. Phony?

If every object is touchable and destructable, and you can go inside every building, this will be an epic game.

That makes no sense. San Andreas has planes. So did GTA III, and it came out after 9/11. They could have easily pulled out the plane as the dodo never really involved the story.

I'm really getting pumped for this game. GTA III settings with updated graphics and (more) realistic physics. Mm.

Neither looked so close to New York, with all the landmarks and whatnot.

Liberty City didn't look like New York? Save for specific landmarks...

Actually the Dodo was nerfed as a direct result of 9/11. You can bet the "realness" of this GTA is why planes aren't in this time round too.

As long as there are helicopters and motorbikes I'll be happy, I don't use anything else.

Well, there is a fair point to be made about there not being enough room to really fly them. Where would you land? I mean obviously you can take off from the airport and there may be some open fields in the New Jersey area or Central Park ... but for the most part you're ****ed once you're off the ground. Of course they could put the parachute back in ... but there's not a lot of point. It's just not very practical, not to mention being able to weave a plane in between the buildings of Manhattan wouldn't do a whole lot for the atmosphere (just doesn't look right, you could never see that). I mean how often did you guys really use that water plane from Vice City?

Helicopters are definitely sufficient. Now if they're out of the game too ... well that would suck.

EDIT: Pretty much the entire article re-typed with the pictures added in where appropriate (includes captions). Better than scans:

I hope to see some nice ragdoll action, always wanted that in GTA :)

San Andreas too complicated? Well I hope you can handle living in the real world, cause it's also very complicated. A lot of possibilities doesn't mean you have to check them all out at once if that confuses you.

The whole point of a game is to get the hell away from the real world.

It wasn;t that it was complicated. It just felt bloated and unfocused.

That's the worst comparison ever made.

Unfocused, don't worry, not only will you see next-gen ragdoll action, you'll see next-gen AniPhysics, for GTA IV will be making us of the Euphoria physics engine, that blends AI, physics and animations.

If you don't know what the Euphoria engine is, dig up some of the techdemos on YouTube.:)

The whole point of a game is to get the hell away from the real world.
Depends on the genre and how you view it, the whole point of simulations(Which are still considered games), is to simulate or emulate a certain environment in an as accurate way as possible.

Thanks Gargantou, that's some nice stuff :) I've seen the one with Indy on the bridge before. I wonder how much of that will be implemented in GTA IV.

/bumps into pedastrian who flies a few meters forward and clings on to a signpost :D

That's the worst comparison ever made.

I don't see why.
