So far:

IGN: 10/10
Grand Theft Auto IV is just as big a leap forward, though perhaps in subtler ways, and sets a new benchmark for open-world games. Everything in GTA IV works in harmony. The story would be nothing without the city; the city gains realism from the physics engine; the physics compliment the improved AI; the AI would make no sense without the new cover system. And on and on. There is no one major weak aspect.

GameTrailers: 9.8/10

EuroGamer: 10/10

GTA IV is the 10/10 you were expecting. Almost everything you do in Liberty City would be good enough to drive its own game, and the best parts would be good enough to outrun the competition, but the reason it works so well is that Rockstar has made a game that requires no patience to play. This, as much as its usual coherency and the best script in the series, is what makes GTA IV the best openworld game yet, and why it will take something miraculous to rob it of game of the year status.

GameInformer: 10/10

Grand Theft Auto IV doesn?t just raise the bar for the storied franchise; it completely changes the landscape of gaming. Once you play it, you won?t look at video games the same way again.

GameDaily: 10/10
Grand Theft Auto has matured into something that feels as much like a living, breathing piece of interactive art as it does a video game. We have a hard time imagining anyone picking up this game and not feeling like this is one of the best $60 purchases they've made in a long time.

GameSpy: 5/5
Suffice it to say that Grand Theft Auto IV is a game that could keep anyone busy for a long, long time. Although its got plenty of excellent features, it's ultimately the storytelling that makes it an instant classic, a game unlike any we've played before. As is the case with many great books and movies, you'll want to know what happens to the characters after the game ends, and one can't help hoping that all of their American Dreams comes true.

Anyone else want to add whatever they find? Can anything stop this as GOTY?? Little Big Planet? Meta Gear Solid 4? Fable 2? Alan Wake? Something we have not even heard of yet??

ya just check out metacritic
it was still at 100 overall w/12 reviews last time i checked
UNIVERSAL ACCLAIM!

UNIVERSAL ACCLAIM!

Alot of games start off like that. I'm sure GTA4 will get some nit-picky reviews and bring the average down to like 89 or something.

I also really like how none of the reviews shows what happens at max wanted level. Can't wait to see what the military rolls out.

When Yahtzee fawns over it, i'll be impressed. :p

I don't think there's any doubt that GTA IV is GotY.

I heard EDGE gave it an 8/10, but I've yet to have that confirmed.

Yeah, I don't believe anyone will ever give it an 8 or lower. From what I gather it would not deserve such a low score, but we will see tonight at midnight!!

I know it will be a serious contender for GOTY, but there are some other extremely serious contenders due out later this year. Little Big Planet is the only one that I personally think could generate the kind of love from gamers and critics alike to challenge this. Does anyone else think this is even possible? Of course, I just remembered Far Cry 2 which is certainly promising to do some very interesting things that push the genre forward too.

IGN AU gave it 9.7 lol

Where are GS with theirs? Not that I visit GS much at all, it has really gone to ass but I need more vid reviews.

YAY!

It could certainly be GoTY, but there are some other prime contenders for the spot too. Like Starcraft 2, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead and Spore (best bet in my opinion). After all, GTA 4 hasnt done anything revolutionary, despite the obvious amount of quality that has been put in. Spore is a one of a kind game, and that may be enough to earn it GoTY if it pulls things off perfectly.

spore will be great, if it EVER comes out

AWESOME!

Mine shipped from ebgames, but I don't have tracking info yet. They guaranteed a street date of the 29th, so... I better get it.

I'm almost afraid to play this game. What if it's so good that you'll think all other games are crap and you become jaded for life. What then man?! What then?

From the gamespot review

The vehicle handling is difficult to fault, regardless of whether you're in a sports car, a garbage truck, a motorcycle, a speedboat, or a helicopter. However, while driving, you might notice one odd quirk that has been a constant ever since GTAIII: When taking the controls of certain vehicles, you'll suddenly notice a lot more of the same vehicle on the roads. It's not a big deal, and it isn't detrimental to the gameplay, but it's a little jarring if you get into one of the more unusual vehicles in the game--for example, the equivalent of either a Ferrari or a pickup truck--and suddenly find that the city is filled with them. That particular quirk is pretty common in some of the multiplayer modes as well, though you'll likely be too busy keeping an eye out for other players to take any notice when you venture online.

So I guess the problem is still there :(

Oh well, it won't bother me.

God I want this Game!!! pero no tienemos bastante dinero!!!

Luckily my birthday is on the 6th! I told my brother i wanted it so maybe i'll get it, but he just pulled a GTA of his own and got arrested, so he probably has no money! GARRRR!

Hmm, will have to go to the bookshop and check it out. I can't wait to read all of the gushing print reviews. Don't worry, I will bring tissues. ;)

This game has beaten HL & HL2 on metacritic. This is unprecedented!

Edge's June issue is out, GTA4 got a 10.

Read it today, not a bad review tbh. They write it up very much from the perspective of the world Rockstar have created in Liberty City through the characters, rather than focusing on technical features. The closing line is quite telling:-

There are few other games so constantly engaging or entertaining, and it maybe a painfully long time before anything else matches up to it's breadth of vision

With development cycles what they are today. I don't think they are far wrong in this. Even though it's only May I can't see there being any serious contenders out there for Game of the year.

Also off topic but most amusing in EDGE was a preview piece of Fallout 3, where they casually dismissed the hardcore fanbase as ' hampered by irrational levels of nostalgia'. Don't tell Mikael ;)

Damn next friday for me can't come soon enough, fuping exams.

As we've already estabilished, industry whores don't bother me.

Why is everyone portraying this game as the second coming of Christ?
