i'm playing with
-9600 PRO
-3.2 Eghz
-512mb Ram DDR400

And everything to high (1024x768) (2xaa,2xaf) and my fps in :
HL2 = ±40
CS : S = ±60

i don't know why you guyz are all buying cards that cost 800$... but my 150$ one, seems to do the trick...

Back before HL2 was released I told everybody that if you bought a 9600 Pro, HL2 would look amazing on your computer. Guess I was right.

I upgraded from a 9600 Pro to a X800 Pro because I'm a hardware geek. Speaking of which I have the odd urge to upgrade something in my computer again...

for sure... i know for the upcoming game's a better card will be needed but for now my 9600pro is tricky with hl2 :)

yea wellI have a 6800 ultra and in both games my fps never goes below 90

I have a 9800 PRO and my fps never drops past 50...

thats so cool, you'll barely notice the difference yet still be about £400 out of pocket between you:p

i'm playing everything on high except shaders, reflect all on 1024x768 with 4xAA/4xAF and the game is fine, i can play it on the same settings on 1280x1024 but the game does show some slowdown when fighting multiple enemies and when viewing lots of reflactions/refractions

someday i'll get a new card, but for now the 9600Pro will do me fine

I don't believe you ;)

(even with an FX55 and X800xt pe the frame rate drops into the 60's when there's lots going on)

I have a 3500+ and an x800xt platinum and my FPS averages 90 when i play at 1600x1200 with full ingame quality settings and 4xFSAA 8xAF. I doubt you could even manage 10 FPS on a 9600 pro. Add that to the fact i will be able to play games well into 2007 on my card (until I have to upgrade to a DX10 card) then i would say my £319 i spent on my card is well worth it.

Also add that games are rarely more enjoyable just because you can play them at uber high settings.

I recently got a x800xt pe (9800 pro before) - and HL2 now flys with everything maxed out at a high res. It looks great ........ but is it more fun? Not really.

(Resident Evil 4 on the GameCube owns it ;)))

i would have been happy with a 9800 pro but since i had a DX8 card beforehand i though i may aswell take the plunge on a card that will last me ages...

I'm hoping that too.

The XT PE is so beefy that even the best cpu out at the moment causes a bottleneck at a high res. It should last a good while :)

Yup... I have socket 939 which should mean that an upgrade to something in the region of a 5000+ will be doable in the future since AMD will be supporting socket 939 for the next 18 months or so.

2xaf and 2xaa are not high...

The reason $500 exist is 1600x1200 at 8xAF and 4xFSAA, on the most demanding games - Half-Life 2, Far Cry and Doom III. The X800XT PE's and 6800 Ultra's will also have a considerably better chance at handling Unreal 3.0, whereas the 9600 Pro may as well pack up its bags and go.

Hardware Geek
definition
Those who often have an odd urge to upgrade when your computer is already way above average.

Im a hardware geek, Definitely.

Unreal 3.0 is to good for them ( ... unless they reach a 512mb-1024mb ram version of the current latest cards. )

i know that 2xaa and 2xaf is not high, but it did'nt costed me 600$(US)..

:| I paid $400, so my x800 Pro could last me a while and give me performance without having to sacrifice a lot of quality in order to play a game. Sure, Half Life 2 might play well on your 9600 Pro, but then again, you can have a GeForce 4 do the same. It's because it's better optimised than other games I.E. Doom III.

I have my settings on 1280 x 1024 4x AA, 4x AF and of course everything else on high. I get around 50's and 60's in FPS, no higher only because I play with Vsync on. Due to my personal preferences, I hate playing games with a resolution lower than 1280 x 1024, because everything looks ugly as hell.
