Guild Wars 2

Wow. Some lofty promises there, hopefully they can follow through.

I own the original game as well as the Trilogy pack on Steam but i have yet to play through either one of the games. It looks good and i can appreciate the production value of the game but i just can't get into them for some reason.

Same. I played the first one for maybe 10 hours, then just never picked it up again.

That trailer makes it look fantastic though. Put it on my radar. I won't hold my breath as to those ambitions of theirs, but I'll be interested in its outcome.

Some of these promises seem almost impossible for an MMO.

Either way this might be an instant purchase for me. I like the added Steam Punk features as well.

"we're different"

We'll see but if you can live up to half your promises this might be awesome. I've got a copy of Factions lying around somewhere and same as other peeps played a bit and then just stopped.

The thing I'm most curious about? How much of it is instanced (or at least "phased" as WoW is doing things now). I'm betting a lot.

Apparently the majority of the game is set in a persistent world. You can be running out in the wilderness and meet anybody else who is there on your server.

Personal story progression and dungeons will be instanced. I think large areas of the persistent world will be split up though, I don't think it will all stream like WoW. People have pointed out there are portals which look like the area portals from GW1. We don't know where they go, maybe outside the city, or maybe to a personal story progression area/dungeon.

I am getting from a lot of sites that the release date is November 2nd 2011

Over a year? :(

Are you new to the gaming scene or something ZT? Sites make up bullshit release dates that they pull out their ass when they don't have any real information.

That said, yea, a little over a year sounds about right to me.

Maybe i'll finally be able to complete the original game and its expansion packs by then. Is it just me or are the Guild Wars servers laggy? I don't remember having any lag issues when the game originally came out.

What Krynn said. I think we might have a summer release :) (Hoping!)

They're fine for me, but I'm in Europe.

Saw this image yesterday and it looks epic. Can't wait to join in battling a big boss with a load of strangers :D

Leaked gameplay vid from Gamescon.

Edit: Youtube version:

By the way, the guy playing had some cheats enabled so monsters couldn't see him.

Also it appears that he accepts a quest at the end of the demo. They said you can activate some events by finding items, players and other things.

I like the new HUD, nice change :) Map transition and the map itself was nice too :)

Love the look of the warrior, can't wait to play as one :D

ya there are like 9 parts to that vid
some juicy stuff in there
gotta say, it's lookin great
easy at the top of my most anticipated MMO list

Ugh that looks so good, hard not to get a little hyped. Please let there be Australian servers...

Looks good. I definitely dig the art direction. I also like the fact that only the story missions will be instanced while the rest of the game will be open world.

level cap is 80. they aren't kidding about appeasing the level whores. (GW1 wasn't about leveling up and overpowering others)

Meh. I was hoping combat would be a little less hotkey based. Can't stand that kind of gameplay.

That makes no sense at all Krynn! You want, what, mouse gestures?!

Wish this was actually coming out soon, looks damn good. I'd like to see some PvP, though!

Yeah hopefully they'll release some details on the PvP soon!

Looking forward to see what they're going to do with WvWvW (World vs World vs World) battles. We know that it will involve objectives and areas to capture, and that each world has a castle or something and it will involve siege weapons to attack enemy castles. The battles can last a long time (a week or more?) and the winning world (server) will get buff across the world for all players :)

No world on GvG combat yet, but I'm sure it'll be very balanced and competitive like it was in the first game.

"There's infinite possibilities to customize your character in Guild Wars 2"

I really hope that is at least partially true, if the character customization is extensive as something like the APB character creation, I might die of happiness.

Didn't they show character creation in these videos?

I am talking about the visual aspect. In the latest video the demonstrator gets to the character model selection and says something like "There are infinite ways in Guild Wars 2 to customize your character, but for the purpose of this demonstration we're just going to choose randomize" and on the model screen it says something like "EXTENSIVE CHARACTER CREATOR" or something.

... Unless you are talking about a completely different vid.

I couldn't stand GW1. It was a joke of an MMO. You couldn't even jump dude.

This does look pretty cool though.

Guild Wars is not an MMO nor did the devs ever labeled it as one. It's a cooperative rpg with social hubs and pvp.

Sounds more fun to me. So yeah.
Mouse gestures, cool! Sounds innovative and not at all gimmicky or obtrusive. :)

Seriously, hotkeys are essentially just pushing buttons to accomplish things, same as basically every game, except there are usually more keys to worry about. MMOs rely on this because it's the most efficient and effective way to have a number of abilities at your disposal without being cumbersome or inhibiting to gameplay. Not to say another system couldn't work, but relying on what seems "fun" doesn't always pan out with extended play, MMOs being what they are. These methods are tried and true for a reason.

One important way Guild Wars (to my knowledge) differs from something like WoW, though? You're not using all of your abilities at once. If it stays true to the original, which it appears to be doing, you have the spells that are on your 1 to 9/0 keys at any given time and that's it (actually in GW1 I think you just had 1-8). No mapping abilities to tons of bars all over your screen or making shift/ctrl combinations to have access to everything, it's all just there, or becomes available by context (like switching weapons). So, no claw hands from trying to press everything or ridiculous mice with 50 buttons, at least.

I think there should be a MMORPG with a control configuration like Soul Calibur. Compare that to something like WoW. It still has lock on target, but it has like 70 moves per character, all from a gamepad. Not to mention it would be hella cool learning new moves, through the traditional RPG level up scenario.

A ninja MMORPG. Hell yeah. Ninjas (Evil) vs. Samurais (Good) + other fighters, I guess.

Why keep the levelling up? While we're reinventing the genre, get rid of this awful mechanic!

The kinda have. If you're a high level and go into a lower level area you will get scaled down so you don't ruin the game for people in lower levels. And if you go to a higher level area whilst a low level with a higher level friend you will be scaled up so you aren't useless in those areas.

I kinda like levelling up anyway, and during the gamescom demo (which was 40 mins long) some level 47 players had got up to levels 48 or 49, so it's not going to take forever to get to 80 :)

I'd kind of like to see some more alternatives to this, but honestly I don't find it to be a flawed system, it's just a bit played out. Final Fantasy XIV is using a different system I think, where everything is based on advancing skill sets without actual player levels, but it's still leveling in a sense, just with a broader set of options (in theory anyway, that's before the min/maxers get their dirty fingers on it and pare it down to a select few acceptable specs). Same deal with Eve Online. They're just different forms of progression, and with how intrinsic that is to MMOs, I don't think they're going away any time soon.

That sounds pretty dumb imo. Being a higher level and getting dumbed down in lower levels ruins part of the fun of leveling. I love going back to early places and shamelessly pwning everything just to see how awesome my guy has become.
I thought that that they once you hit a certain level(probably 30-40) that you start getting smaller and smaller stat increases per level so that a level 75 char won't be all that much better(stat wise) than a level 50 one. But that could be old info I'm going off of.

I did like it in GW1 how you were able to get maxed out fairly quickly as far as your level and stats are concerned and be able to get to all sorts of areas without the level grind. It sounds like in some way they're going to incorporate this and I hope that it will turn out successful.
