Someone I knew is a big Guild Wars fanboy and he has got me interested in the game. I was reading up on it when I found this FileFront preview of the game...

I'll let it speak for itself.

As far as the actual gameplay goes, I'd have to say that Guild Wars is going to come out on top of both of these MMORPG behemoths. Although I haven't had extensive time to play through EverQuest 2 yet, I'm basically expecting more of the same from that title, though there is still a lot of time for surprises to be made. That said, I have had time to play through World of Warcraft extensively, and while the game is extremely well-done and very polished (even in its beta state), it hardly brings anything new to the genre. Compare that to Guild Wars, which is probably the most innovative MMORPG, hell, the most innovative game I've seen in years. It puts such a focus on fast-paced combat, and an even larger focus on teamwork, that it will be an MMORPG for the most action/RPG crowd. Why such a game hasn't been released up to this point is beyond me, but thankfully Guild Wars will cure such a thing.

Bottom Line: Guild Wars will trounce the competition with its fast-paced, innovative gameplay.

:)

GW is cool. But the E3 beta I got to play sucked. Alot.

I'm waiting for the "open" beta later this month, which lasts.. 2 days, unless you pre-order the game :| :|

Anyway.. as far as I played, GW is much more like Dungeon Siege than WoW. WoW is a traditional MMO, GW.. isn't. I don't think it's rightly fair to compare them.

Either way, both of the games have talented developers, as GW's have alot of ex-Blizzard employees, while WoW is.. wel.. Blizzard.

Most common arguments against GW's :

"It doesn't have a monthly fee - it MUST suck !"
"GW's Graphics are pawned by WoW's "

According to this interview, neither are true ... :p

Yeah I played the E3 demo that came with PC gamer, and it did suck. All I did was run around hitting stuff..and it all died really easily.

It was OK, stood around what 250k people playing it? Battle.net barley reachs that(Mostly due to the sc population fell, months ago it use to be 100-180k, now its about 30k on average and the rest of the battle.net population fell nearly 50-100k). But once that open beta comes out we will all get to see what it comes down to. Will the architect of battle.net, and former wc1,2,3 and sc employs make a great game? Or will it be nailed down by other games? We will see.

Btu it may not be fully classical but it is a MMORPG.

I haven't played WoW, but I really enjoyed Guild Wars very much. One thing I especially liked was playing with people off the site..but I can do that in anything. However, the no monthly fee has deffinately gained favour with me.

i dont know a lot about guild wars, but from what i do know im not very interested. the only thing ive heard about it that interests me is that theres no monthly fee. World of warcraft, however, i adore completely. im a level 23 paladin on the beta, and im loving the game. and about battlenet... WOW isnt run on battlenet, it has independent servers that can support laods of poeple.

I wouldn't consider the e3 phase a real representation of the game. Though from what I've played in that phase and the WoW stress test, GW seems more action-oriented.

Well I think GW gears more towards the Diablo sort of game. Like a hack and slash but much more complex. Also the graphics that I saw in the e3 beta were excellent, no problem for me. Also one of the cool things was that there were differnt type of Arena games were you could have teams of different people and either protect a fort, or just beat eachother up with other players. Much fun

. WOW isnt run on battlenet
You just gotta read the FAQ to know that, but the ornigal battle.net creators are comin back to create a super top of the line online system for guild wars :). From running multiple copies on the server so you can fix something without bringing it down(Like D2) to supply a 56k no lag system(i had no lag during E3). Ahh the oringal battle.net creators are gods to me :). They started the biggest online system in history.

I played the e3 demo for gw and the stress test for wow, I dont know where you guys are getting the idea that gw sucked I think its badass and equaly compared to wow. Infact playing the e3 demo of gw is what got me interested in mmorpgs in the first place, and im kind of a hard critic.

the Guild Wars E3 For Everyone event was awesome fun :D i played it solid for the 3 days. gorgeous graphics, and Arena net hardly flinched even with users from all over the world connecting and playing.

i also played the WoW stress test, which was also great fun.

i wouldn't compare the two though, since they're differently orientated. GW is more instance based, while WoW is more community based. where GW will be based on a small and focused experience, WoW will try to dominate your life by delving you deep into the Warcraft universe.

they were different sort of experiences for me. GW was pretty mindless and never really taxing either on my brain or on my time. WoW on the other hand, demands all of your time so you can build up your character and discover new items and complete quests etc.

anyway, they're both fun :p

i'm definitely picking up both games though.

I liked the E3 demo, the PvP arenas and team-deathmatches were pretty cool :)

And the fact that it has no monthly fee is a very big plus! Many people have put off MMOs just for that, but they'll probably want to give GW a try. I'm sure it will be a commercial success, no doubt about it.

My WoW woman > My GW woman

I did like the PvP arena thing Guild Wars had goin' on, though...

The GW E3 thing ruled. Playing a monk was unbelievably fun, trying to keep my team alive. We made it to the treasure room even, and we won like 7 times in the PvP arena until we started losing team mates to real life stuff. It was definately more fun than Everquest.
I haven't played WoW yet, but I'm definately not buying it with a monthly fee. Monthly fees irk me.

Ah Dedalus...my favourite monk. We should get together in this open beta that is coming up :)

WoW has PVP battlefields planned.. it's gonna be awesome

And another advantage for GW over WoW is that its almost impossible to cheat or use bots in GW due to its streaming technology. :)

I played the beta thing that was available to everyone during E3 or something..for a couple of days. I hated it...big time. Everquest 2 looks great though.

It won't help. Just you wait! lol

The streaming technology is pretty impresive.

if the game didnt look like such a peice of shit i might have laughed

I've yet to play WoW, but I can say with experience that GW is indeed very good. I'll likely get both. :)

Graphics were great, and ran smooth even on low-end comps.

I played this gem during E3, and I must say I was on it 24/7! :D. The action is just really nice.

Cant wait to play it on the 29th ;)

The bad thing about WoW lately is its being rushed.
Most likely to polish VUGames fiscal stats.
They lack a lot of things now that were originally planned for release,
that's a little disappointing.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's the best MMO out there...
yet - GW won't you have to pay a fee so...

WoW > GW (without considering price)

but GW (no fee) >= WoW (with fee)

are you in the WOW beta? just wondering, as this is the only way you would know whether it was rushed ot not. i can safely say that it is FAR from release, there is still a lot of things that blizzard have to do. id say at least 5 pacthes before its ready for release minimum. im looking forward to the next patch because it introduces LOADS new paladin spells and talents. good for me :D also theyre introducing raid groups... which are very special dungeons / monsters. theres a HUGE dragon coming in the next patch... <3 dragons :D

In GW can you find other items to you or do you start with a set of items that stays with you?

Monsters drop items and you can also buy items from NPCs or trade with other people.

2 more days to the event \o/ though i think it will start tomorrow.

That's not the sense I'm getting from most of the other beta testers on their forums... they're thinking open beta along with the next patch... maybe one more for release... and it sounds like it is ready for release already... especially with all the talents being in with this coming patch... Hell, I thought it was mostly ready with the stress test. :O

well maybe 5 is a little too much... but the game has much more glitches that it did in the stress test (suprisingly), and there is still a lot of things that are in development. theyre going to add a hell of a lot of raid areas, like the dragon i mentioned. plus new areas are popping up now and again, and quite a lot of classes need talents. new warlock pets are in development and blizzard are seriously considering poker. yes, the open beta is just around the corner, but i wouldnt hope for a release date anytime soon....

Did you say... poker? :O

Haha, that'd rock...

yes but blizzard are reluctant to putting it in, because they think that little kids will get addicted to gambling as a concequence... :hmph:

Suicide, don't delude yourself. Hero classes, racial traits, PvP arenas, guild housing/housing, weather effects.. all are NOT going make it in by release. Blizzard intends to get the game out before the end of the year.

We'll see a crapload of changes come next patch (and, as you said.. TALENTS FOR PALADINS, about time :D), chances are, we'll see one follow-up patch about a week or two later, and open beta signups around the time EQ2 comes out (which is the 8th, for people not paying attention). Many MANY bugs will be squashed. There's only a few that I've noticed that make it feel more buggy than the ST:

Looping sound. IE. casting a spell and the casting sound NEVER goes away, makes you pull your hair out in anger and annoyance.

Looping animations, such as bandaging and casting spells. The effect stays until you recast.

Melee misses atleast 2x more than it used to. THIS IS MY BIGGEST ISSUE. Blizzard, FIX THIS! ARRRR.. lol

Taxi bug, where you can control Gryphons/Hippos/etc.. it's fun, but annoying after the first few times it happens.

Fix those few bugs, add in the rest of the talents, tie up the loose ends, go open beta, release a patch during OB.. go gold, retail before Christmas, and bam. We're done.

The game is FAR more finished and polished than most MMOs. Besides, MMOs are always a WIP, adding features after shipping isn't a big deal.

Blizzard said minigames, not poker. The topic was poker, but it's doubtful poker will end up in the game anytime soon.
