[Hack 'n' Slash] Torchlight

Can't wait to play this when I'm bored/annoyed with Borderlands :D

Maybe I'll stop off at home for lunch to start the DL for it.

Great game. Amazing how much detail there is to it. The graphics might not be like Crysis, but they are so full of flavour and character. I mean, look at my current rifle: it is a friggin' skull gun!. The sounds are well done but my kudos go to the music. It is so damn atmospheric. The gameplay itself is solid. Hack 'n' slash as it is supposed to be. I uploaded a little video of me playing my Vanquisher:

It is just 800mb. Downloaded mine in under ten minutes.

Is there multiplayer? I heard there isn't, and that's the only reason I played Diablo 2.

This game looks awesome! The music sounds so much like Diablo 2. What's the word on a demo?

Also Shaker, what are your specs and settings?

The game is REALLY fun and looks friggin nice. The interface feels a bit akward, but its still fine. Mostly just small things, like not being able to open the pet panel while shopping. I started playing with destroyer, got to about lvl 11. Even got my first set item, which unfortunately for me it was a gun (had +150 dmg thou).

The pet system is well made. The pet is actually useful, not just a cute little puppy. Once I got two spells on him he became a beast. He can summon some badass flaming swords and shoot freezing ice bolts, a f dog does that :D

Edit: oh and one other function I'd like to see: bindable hotkeys... Pressing the number keys just feels so damn clumsy.

The music is done by the dude that did the Diablo games. No wonder you noticed it. :)

The demo is out on Steam. It is timed, you get to play two hours iirc. Download it. NAO!

My specs are Intel Core Duo 6600, GE260GTX TOP and 4 gigs 'o ram. But basically everyone can run this. Jimbo has a single core intel, an Ati 800 and 2 gigs and he ran the game with everything on high as well.

not being able to open the pet panel while shopping.

It opens on default when you go shopping. It is the panel below the trader's panel.

Yeh, being able to map your keys would be very welcome.

EDIT Giant Bomb did a 15 minute quick look.

God I hate this game. I'm supposed to be reading applied electromagnetism, not playing! But still... Maybe just one more level...

Great game. Looks good, runs smooth, has a clean interface, simple but responsive combat, and all at a good price!

It is very similar to Diablo2, but I dont see anything wrong with having a new world and content in a proven gameplay style.

My lvl 11 Vanquisher:

Did a couple of map and quest dungeons tonight. They offer quite a bigger challenge. And better loot so well worth the effort.

Phase beasts also give some challenging "bonus" rooms. Just finished the main quest line, I think. LVL 37 atm. I'm pissed that I picked normal, it's just so damn easy. Now to explore the *censored*!

Those Phase Beasts dungeons are fun, but very hard. Plus keep in kind that (afaik) you can't send your pet to town when you're in one.

What I've played so far has been pretty good! I got to 20-something on a warrior guy, but I've now started over as a mage on hard difficulty. It was far too easy on normal. Almost everything was a one-hit kill, though I thought my guy should actually be able to take a lot more hits for a warrior.

Hard mode seems to be the ticket so far.

Just played the demo for over an hour. Great fun! I like this game alot and will definitely buy this one.
I was playing the Vanquisher on Hard and got to level 7 or 8.

It does run really well most of the time. When there are tons of monsters getting pounded it starts to chug quite a bit and the load times are long. I blame my slow processor. (Athlon 64 3000+)

Torchlight hangs and has long load times even on my computer. Theres a thread in the official forums about bugs etc. They stated there that performance will be improved on next patch as well as load times.

I too started a new char, got my destroyer to lvl 50 on normal. Made an alchemist on Hard + hardcore for the extra tension :p

Whoa, you are fast. I am taking my good time with this game.

By the way, no multiplayer for TL was confirmed by Runic in this podcast. Basically, it isn't possible, but if someone is able to mod it in, he or she gets offered a job at Runic. :)

How the shit would it be impossible?

One of the Shaefer brothers said: "I would be pretty surprised if someone would be able to mod it in. It would be fairly difficult, because of the random nature of the game, and the sheer amount of entities and monsters. If you get functioning multiplayer into this game, you are probably very awesome."

....Blizzard did it with Diablo. How much more random can you get?

I guess I just don't understand their excuses lol.

The dudes from Runic made Diablo. They left Blizzard around 2002, 2003 or so. And I don't get it either, but then again I don't know anything about programming.

I'm hoping someone mods it to be MP. That would rock so much cock.

They're still planning the multiplayer MMO portion, but they said that they're not planning on working on a LAN or Co-op function for the game.

Yeah, they will keep supporting the game, maybe add some content for the boxed version or release an expansion if sales would encourage this, but basically they need the money they make now for building the MMO.

Is there an item identification service like Cain in D2? I have so many unidentified items piling up and nothing to identify them with.

You can use identify scrolls. They're found in dungeons and are sold in town.

I'm interested in this game but I think I'll wait till the end of the year. I bought too many fall games and i need to play them.

On identifying, get the indentify spell. You don't have to use scrolls, just mana. I found mine from the gem seller.

Another hint, enchanting items isn't always safe, I don't know if the tooltip said this, but you can loose ALL enchantments from the item (my set belt got totally reset).

According to the devs the chance of this happening is only 1% but a lot of people on the Runic forums are reporting this. Might be a bug.

LMAO!

That's a clever way for the Devs to get out of having to invest more time into the game to make a MP addition. Let a modder do it for them/us for free. As for the game itself, I am having a good old time playing it. Vastly superior to FATE. I just reached level 10. I'm playing as the warrior, though I am finding some powerful firearms & am thinking of switching classes. I am a Duel Wielder & with a pistol in both hands, most enemies die in one or 2 hits, but as I am a melee fighter, I can't use my specials with ranged weapons.

I was playing on normal, but the game is much too easy. So I'm going to give hard a try. I want a challenge, but I might lose interest if it's Die in one hit, respawn, die in one hit, respawn. The game otherwise is very colorful, what with explosions & Special abilities & the like flashing on the screen.

Torchlight is a very Satisfying game to play, if you enjoy games of this type.

I just beat it last night with the caster on hard. I went heavy on the minion path, and ended up with 6 imps, a badass melee golem, a decent beam golem, and a perma fire elemental pet. My golems more or less soloed the final boss. My only issue were the mobs that have dash attacks. Just two of them could potentially insta-kill me or take out half my minions. I have less problems with named enemies. Still, a lot of fun. I'm debated whether I should retire and start the melee character.

Good to see you enjoy the game. I am not surprised you like it since you are also into Borderlands. Same driving factor: loot. :) Plus the gameplay is exactly how a hack 'n' slash should be imo. And about the hard difficulty: if normal is 'way too easy' for you, hard will be just right. The map dungeon is still quite easy but the map and phase beast dungeons will offer a proper challenge.

Game's fun but very easy on normal. I simply health pot tanked the last boss. I regret starting my destroyer on normal. Kinda waiting for a difficulty change mod so I can level him further on very hard. Don't have the balls for hardcore though D:

I "finished" the demo with the Vanquisher. It seems like you're also capped at level 7 which limits the quality of gear you can put on. I found some pretty decent stuff in the map dungeons. I really liked the different look of those.

I did start a Destroyer and he's level 4. I really the attack skills. AoE on melee is super sweet.

I have been playing both on Hard and while it's not too difficult at these low levels you can quickly get taken out if you aren't careful and get surrounded by a large mob.
I think the harder difficulties add more HP to the baddies than damage.

Are all the areas in the game dungeons or are there some areas outside with more open environments?

PvtRyan I remember reading something about a possibility to change the difficulty in the upcoming patch. You should really try hardcore, it makes the game way more tense. Long fights feel more rewarding that way.

And sadly theres no open enviroments, but I'm sure we'll get lots of them when the mods start rolling in.

Game is rather sweet considering the User Content part. I'm pretty sure the devs will create some room to move for the TorchED, like tile sets, hub worlds etc. I've played as a Alchemist to level 30 but I've currently leveling a Vanquisher.

I've not touched this game since opening up BorderLands....damnit, I want to, because the game is fun as hell.
