Have you lot seen the hacker videos of them playing the source?
The menu looks smooooooth.

I haven't seen any of that...I'm afraid to d/l anything like that..I'm afraid!!!!...(gay porn)...remembers those first days of the leak...

You mean someone just made a video of themselfs playing the leaked beta?

To show off. I hv some of them because I hv a d\l limit of 1 gb so i can't d\l the beta.

And yeah, guy downstairs, now that you mention it, I've only got the new footage.
I didn't cared to d\l the rest, but now I'm starving to see the menu.

There have been two videos (I will not post links, so forget it).
One was obviously fake: It was a dark room and they basically played the traptown video and panned off the monitor frequently. The only thing real was the STEAM-like menu with the huge "chomping tower".
Another showed much more. The beta-player narrated how he had obtained it and hid it in a tree for his friend (stupid but whatever). It showed the menu, a monitor with loading screen, gameplay footage not seen before, and then more footage full-screen.
Don't ask why they did it, I don't know, they didn't even credit themselves (THAT I can see why though).

I thought this site had a policy about not promoting or talking about the beta in any way, shape, or form.

Actually, I'd really like to see the new menu. It won't exactly spoil the game but it'll feed my strained addiction and desire for any info. Like I'm a coke addict trying to snort the last remnants of powder from someone else's nostril.
God, it's pathetic.

It's kinda foggy, you can sorda talk about it, as long as it's discussion about it, but not about what it contains. Like the repercussions of it and what it means to the industry and stuff. But if we started talking about what's in it, even if it's obnoxiously wrong and made up, then it goes into the no-no area.

At least that's been my experience. This thread is sorda in that foggy in between area. Though if we were like, "How has the leak effected Valve" that's an ok topic.

He looks new to the board, so he probably doesn't know anyway.

el Chi, AFAIK, the main menu in the stolen build is a placeholder. It conflicts with the menu we've seen in that bumpmapping video..

Who knows for sure, but I'd be willing to bet the menu in the stolen build isn't the menu that the game will ship with; it's too dull and boring to look at. I could be wrong, though.

Bumpmapping video? Are you talking about the one with the AntLion Guard on top of the roof? When does that show a menu?
That was a good video. <el Chi goes to watch video>

Nah. The devloper video where he takes that single polygon piece of wall, applies that rock-wall bumpmap and loads it up in HL2

It is for the kids to do this feel special, oh yeah I got hl2 beta, not really though, lets share this with everyone and get a laugh.

I think i've lost the ability to understand the written word, or you need to rephrase that.

well those hacker vids are seriously fake all of them are, he installs the game and it doesnt ask where to install it to, and you can obviously see where he is clicking to load the movie instead of the game.
Also the menu is very fake, probably made a skin in steam or something, and the camera is constantly moving so you cant see whats goin on......its FAKE

mmm.. you ARE aware there's a stolen, playable build floating around the net, right?

What is that movie? I've never heard of it till now but the menu in HL2 will be just the same as CS 1.6 or CZ... well every games that run on Steam + a nice HL2 background image.

hmm I didn't know that video was in existence.

Seen it before...however never saw those screens before! *drools*

The attatched image is a picture of one of the maps in HL2

Im not going to spoil anything nore am i premoting the beta

But that boat level IS in the beta

BUT!

This level in the beta is absolute CRAP!

It has barley anything! missing textures, objects, no lighting no water NOTHING!

The beta is nothing compared to what the full game will be,

trust me if you havn't played the beta, im sure you'll have a better experience when the real thing is released... A MUCH better experience!

So if i were you, i wouldn't bother getting it.

Oh and alot of the videos out there are crap.... :-P

It's not quite the same. The name of the map in the beta is devtest. It seems to me that it was probably a playground for new stuff they coded in, and later turned it into a level.

But your point remains valid, the stolen build is crap. It's nothing compared to what you seen in the Bink videos (although the visuals look about the same, there are alot of missing textures/etc in the stolen build). Everything flows MUCH more smoothly in the Bink videos, while the stolen build.. seems "chunky," if you know what I mean.

I deleted the stolen build, takes the temptation away and adds to my want for HL2 :)

There is no chance in hell that the leaked build that was released was the version as of 26/09/03.

I can go through a looooong long list of things to prove that statement correct, but to be honest, I can't be bothered. You don't exactly need to be the Managing Director of Valve Software LLC to work it out either.

yeah, , , i was unfortunate enough to hear some audio files that happened to blow parts of the story.

Im not kidding. When characters talk outside of a oneliner in a fps, chances are its important.

wish i hadn't seen/heard some material.

if this needs to be censored, a ok by me : )

Just to reiterate the rules about beta talk:

Clarification - HL2 'Beta' Illegal Release talk

It is allowed to discuss the illegal release. It is allowed to discuss it's implications, how it effects the community and what people's thoughts are on it. It's allowed to discuss what's in it. However what is not allowed is links to screenshots or files of any content from the release of this 'beta' or the source code. Requests for the 'beta' or source code are also not allowed.

This includes any sort of spoiler too. Quoting lines from map d1_xxxxxxx01 that Barney says won't be appreciated by anyone.

Chris... Not to go off topic here but.. I could watch your avatar for days. I used to have one of space ghost doing the monkey.. *sigh* I have misplaced it.

Yeah, Chris, I've tried to explain to people that the stolen build is VERY old. No one listens, it's sad. Oh well.

lol, but no.. I meant people who have played the stolen build (er.. have you? I didn't think you had lol), visit the csnation forums and see what I mean, they're horribly uninformed there.

"VALVe lied." "The hacker stole all VALVe had." "*insert pointless comment here*"

I've also tried to convince the people who think they're "1337" for having the stolen build that it's not current, that it wasn't optimized properly, etc.. most people won't listen :)

I saw some videos. It was on a site which claimed there were no spoilers. But as soon as you click on screenshots you see pictures which show enemies firing in different ways and new weapons. I count those as spoilers. So I downloaded some videos of the E3 levels. And they are RUBBISH. Seriously, you can complain about the way the guy plays the plays in the BINK videos but at least he made it interesting. Watching someone shoot at Combine soldiers isn't really very interesting.

The only interesting video was one which showed off the physics but the only way it did that was by using a new weapon.

I didn't download any videos of the other maps, I didn't trust them to be "spoiler free" especially when you count seeing a new enemy as a spoiler. Which the video maker didn't.

*hungover*

No, I haven't played it. I was saying that I agreed with you about it being pre-E3 and not being all VALVe had.

New enemies? The stolen build has.. maybe 3 enemies not seen in the Bink videos. I've played through it extensively, hours on end, played every level in it. It gives little to no story away (other than one level), all the enemies we've seen (except 3 or so). The only thing that it ruined for me was all the weapons, although half of them are missing models/have placeholders, I still used every weapon in the build. Oh well, the enemies weren't really shockingly spoilerish IMO

Thats becuase you didn't blah blah blah

just kidding: ) seems so incomplete that most of it is hard to make heads or tails from.

Well the new console is really nice, and yeah the stolen content has nothing special, don't bother. The stolen content is before teh E3 video's, so VALVe wasn't misleading people like they say.
There are many models in the new form of the .pak file though, I would say about 10-20 unseen NPCs (Most have errors, are not animated, or don't have finished skins/look terrible)

[*** section censored by synth***]

Half of the maps are unplayable or have many many errors, and basicly the only thing that you can do is mess around with the physics.

Ok, finally the full truth about the contents beta. No, I won't tell you anything that's in the beta so don't worry about spoilers. This is just what to expect from the beta.

First off, there are about 15-20 maps included in the build. 2 or 3 don't work. And some of them were for testing purposes. There are a couple weapons you haven't seen in the E3 demos and such, and then there are a bunch you can get using the console. Most of those don't work but it adds up to a total af about 5-10 new weapons in the build. There is one new vehicle. I haven't seen it. Also there is a vehicle in this one map that once you get in, you can't get out. (Most likely unfinished) There is one other "vehicle" you can get in, and it is pretty much completed, but that's all I'm saying. There are two almost-completed "series" of maps, which were pretty reveiling. You have access to all the E3 demo maps as well. They ARE buggy and were clearly earlier compilations of the demos we saw from E3. Some of the maps reveal an impressive amount of storyline. There are some more things I want to say regarding this but I'm not sure I am aloud too, and I don't want this post deleted. Overall only including the maps that will actually be in the game there is about 1-2 hours of gameplay. 60-80 hours including playing around with every physical object in the game. :naughty: Onto the monsters and such.

Well, first off, there are around 6 new monsters, 1 of which I highly doubt will be in the final game. Looked like it was just for testing. You beta players probably know what I'm talking about. But anyway, 2 of these monsters made me rip off my headphones and flip on the lights I got so freaking scared. It was the most dramatic moment I've ever experienced in any game. No joking here. About the NPC's. As said earlier, there is a command system with the NPC's. (Atleast the ones that actually fight.) I saw a "turret" being controlled by an enemy, but I could not control it.

About the physics. All the physics I expected to see were there. Including ragdoll and "blanket" physics, like the mattresses. I did see some new technoligy in the beta, physics-wise. I will not state them here. Most of the physics were not buggy.

My overall view of the beta was fairly good. It was worth getting IMO. However I do NOT recomend you get it. I wish I hadn't, too many spoilers. But it was fairly completed engine-wize, all they had left to do was make the rest of the maps and sounds and models and stuff. But that engine was practicaly done. Well, I can't really think of anything else to say, but if you want more info, just tell me and I will post more, o even open a thread on this subject where you can ask questions on the subject. Again, I WILL NOT give out any specifics. Just general information like the above stated. I want your feedback on all this, and I hope HL2 will be released soon.

Oh, one last thing. I currently do not have the beta installed on my machine, once I learned how illegal it was to have.

Once you "learned" how illegal it was? When would it ever possibly be even remotely close to being legal having a stolen copy of an unreleased game?

Well some leaks are legal and there for the purpose of being played to try drum up some interest.. such as the Stalker publicity stunt caused by desperation that Valve was getting tons and tons of free press (though I'm sure if Valve had a choice they'd rather the source code was never stolen and no press atall). And its understandable that if you didn't go to the sites like here or hlradio you'd not know it was highly illegal. Maybe a mate of his said he should try it, and mates being mates skipped the whole bit about he shouldn't even run it, then found out later he would be in serious trouble if caught using it.

Course he could also be BSing and just trying to save his butt by pretending he hasn't got it anymore.

Guess we'll never know :)
