It was no secret that the culprits involved in the Half-Life 2 source code theft had been caught. Today however, Valve's Doug Lombardi has sent out a press release regarding the matter. It has now been confirmed that there have been arrests made in several countries and the press release also extends a thank you to the Half-Life 2 community on behalf of Gabe Newell.

ARRESTS MADE IN RELATION TO HALF-LIFE 2 THEFT[br]

Online Community Tracks Down Hackers[br]

June, 10 2004 - Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve's network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet.[br]
[br]
"Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved," said Gabe Newell, Valve's CEO. "It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime."[br]
[br]
Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests. [br]
[br]
"It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community," added Mr. Newell.

Omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FBI showing what it was made for!!

"it was no secret"???

oh, you mean that big operation a few weeks ago... I didn't knew they had managed to get the hackers.

Hooray for us.

I did nothing. I'm rubbish.

Well, there were rumors about the arrests and I believe Valve confirmed them so, no, the arrests weren't really a secret.

Me too.

Has anyone tried calling 206-262-2030 for more specific details on the arrest?

Yay! Theres karma for you.

Stupid nerds delaying HL2 for the rest of us. I hope they don't enjoy jail, if you know what I mean.

pwnt hahahaha. I only wish I'm smart enough to have helped.

yes...now release the goddamn game!!!! :p

good news...by the way props to HL2.net for picking up and posting these news before it's even on planethalflife

Thats great, now maybe Valve could repay 'us' by actually releasing HL2 or even just giving us a realistic release date.

Cool hackers are out of the way, NOW FINISH THE GAME!

At least we can prove that Valve didn't intrument its own source leak.

As for the former 1337 h4><z0rs, they will now know waht its like to get 0wnz0r3d and p4wnz0r3d by a burly man named bubba.

Ahhhhh... but will they be out before HL2 is released???????

Valve don't owe us anything as a result of this to people jabbering about such things...i'm looking at you cherrio (nice first post btw)

Seriously though it's good to hear that the internet can be controlled in some way even if it is a drop in the ocean.

judge: the sentence is DEATH

hackers: why?!

judge: cuz I love that game and by your fault is delayed!, send then to the chair!

Ugh... the delay was nothing to do with the hackers but, I agree with EVIL.

Sigged :p

(10 chracter BS)

Horray! The next Valve excuse will be:

"Half-Life 2 is delayed until Summer 2005.
The reason for this is that the hackers responsible for theft of the Source Code have been caught, and we have been partying non-stop since.
Sorry.
Gabe Newel"

My thoughts exactly. Let them rot in some crappy jail, where they will become 'special' friends with a man named Bubba...

dam, they were cool haxors.

provide the community with free products. :D

Last night the hackers were simultaneously executed by electrocution. unfortunately the resultant drain on the national grid caused valve's HQ to plunge into darkness. Who knows where HL2 might be now.

Errr, it's on Slashdot. Posted by CmdrTaco on Thursday June 10, @10:30PM

And I think this is the way to go for computer-crime solving: big big communities that all work on one case, like ants in an ant-hill. I can't put an estimate on how big the HL2 community is, but I bet it's big if it can solve such a case (or give tips that can lead to the solving of the case) in such a short time-span. Think of it as a big server-farm that consists of home-pc's, but combined, they make an unsurpassable amount of processing power. Very interesting.

Actually I believe it came from http://collective.valve-erc.com/.

Justice as been severed

This is grate news, I hope the next thing Valve tells us is HL2's release date. :borg:

Do you guys think they were waiting for the hackers to get caught before they would announce a specific date of release for Half-life 2? Half my brain says we will know new information tomorrow, the other half says....this will not change anything on valve's agenda.

As horrible as it was, I think it only improved the game in the long run.

Valve needing to change things and make the code more secure and whatnot is a better payoff than the game coming out 3 months earlier or whatever

Im now thinking of making a mini mod where you play a member of a Black Ops team hunting down the hackers. Sure there were no black ops teams involved but who cares about realism when you can do whatever you want to the hacker inside the game he stole. :D
