Half-life 2: Episode 1 FAQ

Hey guys, bit of a technicalesque question here, but if I were to go out and buy Half life 2: Episode 1, install it onto a separate steam account from my Half life 2 installation (which I know you can do), could I then install Garry's Mod onto the steam account with only Half life 2: Episode 1?

In other words, if I did not have Half life 2, and only had Half life 2: Episode 1, would Garry's Mod work if installed?

Has anybody tried this?

Episode 1 apparently comes with Half life 2 Deathmatch, which I believe is what GMod is based off of.


My situation is that I have some friends who are really interested in playing HL2DM and GMod, but not interested in forking out $60 just for some multiplayer hijinks. This is very frustrating for me as I have some maps custom built for LAN parties and the like (I'm getting around to releasing them... slowly...). So if each of my friends went out and bought HL2: EP1 for a mere $20, would we be able to play GMod together?

That is a very good question (I have the same problem)....

Unfortunately, I haven't heard of any modding support for Episode 1, only of a patch to GM that allows ITEMS from Ep1 to be used in GM. I could be wrong, but I think your best bet is to have them buy HL2....(besides, HL2 is an incredible, it's probably worth the $60 just for the extra levels and storyline)

EDIT: Actually, I did some research, and technically Garry's Mod IS a mod for Half-Life 2 multiplayer, which comes with Episode 1. Chances are that it may work, although im not too sure

Agreed and I don't understand these idiots that play Half-Life 2 first and then HL1 with just "damn this sucks" feeling. They don't know nothing about story or anything. And now when Black Mesa is coming they will download it and will expect that HL1 was like it.
