Half Life 2 is scarier than D3!

D3 is a tired gimmick. nobody cares about hell, demons or any of that crap. HL2 is much scarier because it has feeling in it, and most of all, a great story, better than most movies. D3's story is easily summed up and packaged with the lable "crap" on the side. it sucks, get over it.

Problem with Doom 3 is that there is no ebb and flow. As one reviewer described it, it's like watching a Friday the 13th movie where Jason jumps out from behind every door. It's scary the first couple of times, but then you become numb to it.

In Half-Life 2, the scares come when you least expect them, making them far more intense than Doom 3's constant "imp spawns behind you" gameplay.

As for Ravenholm, it wasn't so much frightening as it was exhilirating. It was like a good ol' fashioned action/horror film. Lots of fun to be had in that level, and Father Gregori rocks!

Like my friend said, "One minute in Ravenholm is scarier than whole Doom 3."

Just today I was back there (replaying the game) I made a big "whoopsie". I was under one of those blade thingies in semi-lit room, I just had killed two zombies but was too scared to get away from my seemingly safe position. Okay, I turn around a bit just to make sure that there isn't anything in the room anymore and then all the sudden I hear a faint thud behind me. I almost crapped my pants, panicked and released the crouch key with predictable consequences.

Another great "Oh crap..." moment was with the poison headhumper zombie. I was way above it and had a exploding barrel so I managed to set it on fire. I thought that it died but when it fell to the ground, three of the poison headcraps started running around flaming. Well, it was now easier to spot 'em but that didn't comfort me that much.

I didn't scared watching The Ring, but Ravenholm is so scary place for me that I can't play that part of the game when it's dark outside. So HL2 is definately scarier than D3.

Since when was doom 3 scary? Heh.. That Ravonholm level beats the crap out of doom 3 on that scale.

I had the exact same thoughts--HL2 is scarier to me than D3. D3 you EXPECT to be scared. Because of the constant spawning behind you and stuff you are on EDGE to be READY for it. I was not expecting it in HL2.

But Ravenholm is not the only area. I was walking in some water and my cousin was watching and a Zombie popped right up in my face--I JUMPED. So did he. He said, "That was not there for me!" Anyhow, HL2 because of the theme, when it tries to be scary it works. It is thrown into the mix well. It is not overdone, but gives good change of pace and feel.

HL2 for me isn't scary in the sense it makes me jump. Its scary with the atmosphere though.

The most disturbing thing I have seen in this game are those poison headcrabs. I shudder each time I hear and see one, they are alot like some sort of nightmarish spider.

Doom 3 is scary?
I haven`t played HL2 yet due to my prehistoric rig but I will soon. I expected doom to be like on the trailers they id showed us but it wasn`t even 1/5 of it. It was waaay too repetitive and predictable

I didn't find Ravenholm all that scary - although father gregori was freakishly cool!

At the end where you are leaving him, he laughs like a psycho while he blasts the zombies. I can't believe how cool gregori really is :p

I found Ravenholm extremely scary, i played through it as fast as i could. I jumped when two fast-zombies jumped at me from the pipes.

Though, i jumped and screamed on the coast level. In one of the houses, i was looking through.. went up to the third floor and was quite relaxed. Made my way downstairs.. and all of a sudden a poison zombie crashed through the roof.. allmost soiled myself :)

actually, i didn't find anything i HL2 scary..
D3 scared me abit tho..

I thought D3 was a complete waste of bling...played for about an hour, deleted it, and sold it to a bud...POS.
HL2 has superb atmosphere. Way better unsuspecting spooks. And some awsome battles....
Cant stop playing, 8 hrs straight. My eyes are burning.

I found the interior of the citadel to be seriously freaky. Scarier than Ravenholm actually.

Ravenholm suffered from what I call the "facade syndrome". It looked more like a ride at disneyland and felt like the buildings were just facades on a hollywood set than a real convincing location for me. I enjoyed it thoroughly dont get me wrong, it was intense. But all-in-all it was my least favorite level.

Scarier than Doom3? By far. Doom 3 was predictably lame the whole time. I dont remember any "wall thats really a closet for holding monsters if you turn away from it". Its like they didnt even try for D3. Ravenholm kept me guessing and on my toes the whole time, and Gregori was cool.

The poison zombies scared the shit out of me, they are in places you don't expect. For example in the coast section, you entered a house after you cleared all the combine, you loot some guns and ammo in the house, and suddenly you hear growling and faint noises and there's that hideous creature behind you. Even though it's full daylight in the game, it's really creepy. HL2 doesn't rely on scare moments like someone jumping from behind a corner, but overall atmosphere.

A lot of you have already mentioned the typical scary moments that scared the crap out of me as well, but the scariest thing for me was when I was extremely low on health and I was in the mines and I thought I killed all the headcrabs and this poison one comes out of nowhere and jumps through some fire to get to me and its running really fast at me while on fire and im panicking trying to get a weapon out and I finally killed it. It reminded me of the movie Arachnophobia when the giant spider catches on fire and its running really fast towards the guy, man I freaked out.

Man I can't wait for that level then, I love scary gothicy freaky sh1t.

God, this game is so good.

Well, it certainly is scary...Ravenholm is definitely scary...I was fleeing from a couple of fast zombies, and my cat walked underneath my leg, and brushed up against my pant legs, and i jumped...

Its funny how focused you can get into a game, that when something or someone physically reacts to you, you freak out when your in a game....

The house you guys are talking about in the coast level, is that the one with the skull spraypainted on the outside of it? I remember going in some house and walking around and suddenly a body fell through the ceiling! I got the hell out of there really quick, I didn't want to find out who did that to the body :p

i just about s*** my pants in the bridge level , i thort i killed a head crab in one of the little huts , i even said to my self hahahha head carb i got you , i carryed on just about walking in the hut , and the same head crab i thort i had killed jumped at me .. made me jump that much my mouse ended up on the floor and mr freeman whent bye byes off the bridge ...

and dont even get me talking about Ravenholm , i was to tence , i loved that level but i was glad it was over in some ways lol ... well not realy cant wate to play that level again lol

Also, in the mineshaft directly after Ravenholm, I noticed that headcrabs are terrifying in huge numbers.
I just hung out in the rafters and killed them all from above I was so scared to drop down :\

Er... Ravenholm was kinda scary, but just wait till you get to AntiCitizen or w/e its called... there is this one part that scared the bejebus out of me...

You guys are such freaks!!! Ravenholm wasn't scary, it wasn't even dark! DOOM 3 was 1000X scarier. Ravenholm atmosphere was great, but not scary!

Hehehe, you seem to be equating scariness with darkness (as the Doom 3 designers did, it seems). If by 1000x scarier you mean 1000x darker, then yes, I agree with you hands down. :-D

yeah...the one part where the zombies come up out of the radioactive water...
it was scarier than ravenholm because there wasn't anywhere to go and not that many things to use with the grav gun. that, and i didn't want to waste all my shotgun ammo....so useful on combine soldiers.

and i hated doom 3 because of the darkness....it was more annoying than anything else. sure those baby things were freaky and everything killed you really fast, so it was stressful to stay alive, but god...switching back & forth to the flashlight...so boring.

like all those futuristic military types working on a poorly lit space colony wouldn't think to have any night vision or even flashlights taped on their shotguns? gimmie a break :\

I don't remember exactly where it was, but I was walking into a building not looking at my surroundings. Right before I got to the building, I hear a really loud sound, and I quickly look left only to see a gigantic strider towering above me with a full sized car coming at me at high speeds because it had just kicked the damn thing at me. That made me jump like a mofo. Haha

I didn't really find ravenholm that scary, but who remembers one of the few cheap scares they put in where you're in the first barn type thing with the saw blades and you go into like the 3rd room and there's the wood blocking the next room and while you're doing that there's zombies coming out of a pitch black hidden room to your left... THAT scared the junk out of me! Then I basically learned my lesson after that and scanned each room beforehand lol.

laff...how about that part just before you go into the citadel when they put 3-4 supply crates full of health packs and suit batteries near some great cover. you go over to bust open the crates and a strider uses its uber cannon and blows the shit out of that whole area, insta-killing you?

that was the first time i got hit by that cannon. it made a terrible noise and it scared the crap out of me cause i thought i was safe behind cover...lol

i find manhacks scary... guess i dont stand a chance in Ravenholm :p

manhacks are rough in the beginning, but not hard once you get the gravity gun....then they become your weapon

HL2 is not scary one bit, just Ravenholm is spooky, thats about it.
D3 was horrid.
But HL2 shits allover Doom 3, and there is no doubt about it.

I must be a rare kind, but I found some parts of Nova Prospekt scary. Zombies, Manhacks, all of those things didn't get to me but I swear that momma Antlion bursting into that cafeteria scared me. Also...

The Anticitizen One, when you walk into that apartment at the top and find that corpse in the chair, watching tele, that freaked me out bad. Also, in the warehouse that Barney is holed up on, if you go to the bottom where it is flooded, you find a wounded resistance soldier screaming for help on a little bit of dry uprising in the concrete. I swear as soon as he yelled "HELP!" a graveyard arose out of the water. They all got shotgunned by myself. Still, thinking of myself in the wounded guy's place, it scared the crap out of me.

Thanks :)

I actually thought about this as well.

Doom 3 was scarier in a sense that.. boo time to be scared. But Ravenholm had a better atmosphere. And the poison headcrabs scared me because I feared for my life!

a box of rice crispies is scarier than Doom 3.
then again, Hl2 wasn't scary either... but it didn't set out to be scary/horror like D3 did.

I didn't really find Ravenholm scary, I knew Father Gregori was covering my ass.

Ravenholm was more of a level that I thought was awesome, I mean, come on, dropping cars on zombies and then having them snap in half is just awesome.

its def not u sissies. doom 3 scared the living shit outa me sometimes. half life 2 im running around like a maniac shooting things, not scary, but really fun and interesting

Aaaaaa...haha..that's Funny!

Anyone else agree with this?

I was playing Ravenholm last night, all the lights off in my house. I got up to the attic of this building and opened the door to go outside, started walking along the roof and suddenly heard and saw one of those crazy zombie mofo's that climb up the drainpipes and try and rip your head off. I freaked out and decided to run back into the building and leg it down the stairs to grab something with the manipulator to chuck at this thing....I was panicking and trying to get down the stairs as quick as I could and all the time I could hear this crazy psycho zombie thing (someone pls fill me in on what they're called) bounding after me in the dark.....and when I could hear it was right on top of me, I actually screamed out loud like a little girl, all high pitched and everything!!!!!

Fortunately noone else was home.... :p

That was a Great Post, thank you for making my evening at work so much more enjoyable. :E

I don't know how people find D3 scary. Turned more into an action game rather than a horror game right after the first 20 minutes. It's too unbelievable. Walking skeletons with unlimited supply of rockets mounted on their shoulders that can knock you 20 feet back despite having no muscle. Tell that to someone who's never heard of D3.

doom3: the lights will suddenly turn off than go dim .. then you'll hear scraping, screaming and other scary sounds .. than you'll fumble to press f to turn the flashlight on while sweating and you slowly check each and every pitch black corner than you'll hear something behind you .. than you'll swing around, switch to a gun and lose the flashlight and try and fight off enemies in the dark.

.. and repeat
