Anyone else agree with this?

Ravenholm inparticular, creeped me out on a number of occasions, much more than D3 did. D3 just got boring and predictable after 20 minutes or so. There's only so many times you're going to get scared by the same scripted event over and over again.

I was playing Ravenholm last night, all the lights off in my house. I got up to the attic of this building and opened the door to go outside, started walking along the roof and suddenly heard and saw one of those crazy zombie mofo's that climb up the drainpipes and try and rip your head off. I freaked out and decided to run back into the building and leg it down the stairs to grab something with the manipulator to chuck at this thing....I was panicking and trying to get down the stairs as quick as I could and all the time I could hear this crazy psycho zombie thing (someone pls fill me in on what they're called) bounding after me in the dark.....and when I could hear it was right on top of me, I actually screamed out loud like a little girl, all high pitched and everything!!!!!

Fortunately noone else was home.... :p

Anyone else agree?

Yes I do actually
I thought Ravenholm was a marvelous location, and I loved the way the zombies bounded around like that did. That scream they have is scary :D

Yeah, it is definately scarier. Ravenholm is convincing, the screams are hardcore. The whole game is scarier b/c the story drags you in and makes the fear more convincing. Agreed?

I scream like a girl (as my roommate audience can attest) every time I hear one of those sonofabitchin' little poison headcrabs...or those godawful poison zombies.

*shudder*
god I wish they hadn't put those in. The fast ones are bad enough :(
I shall see one of these days if switching to god mode to play through again will cure my fear.
Probably not.

Ugly little bastards.

*shudder*

Aye, I agree with you, Half-life 2's general atmosphere makes it a lot scarier, I've not had any jumping out of my seat moments but there were a lot of 'on edge' moments ;)

Yeah it's definately the atmosphere that drags you in...I think it's cos the environment is so realistic and it makes it feel kind of closer to home. Whereas most of us can't really relate to being on a Mars space station.

What makes Half-Life 2 scarier is the sounds made by the zombies.

But I didn't think Doom 3 was scary at all, I just played through the entire game ... kinda boring.

of course, there's also the absence of switching between weapon and flashlight, which just sort of made it annoying.

I still scream like a girl at parts of D3 though.

And I used to be creeped as hell by Undying, but that's because I've been stuck in a years-long love affair with Clive Barker.

Yeah, I just played through Ravenholm a day or two ago, and boy was I scared. I was alone, lights out, bass up...oooh....scary.

Not mention being freaked out by the prowlers (I think those are the crazy zombies).

Ravenholm in particular is better than any zombie horror game I have ever played.

I didn't find Ravenholm all that scary - although father gregori was freakishly cool!

I think Ravenholm was awesome! Perhaps my favorite part of the game (haven't reached the end yet). Scary? I thought so!

Im not too sure about that one, doom3 is scarier, but then doom was made to be scary, half life wasnt, it doesnt change the fact that half life is still the better game

You guys are such freaks!!! Ravenholm wasn't scary, it wasn't even dark! DOOM 3 was 1000X scarier. Ravenholm atmosphere was great, but not scary!

How long is ravenholm? Is it as long as water hazard?
The beginning already freaked me out when i encounter my first poison headcrabs..

Ravenholm isnt too long, just watch out for the poison head crabs, and make good use of the manipulator...there is not much ammo around, also dont get put off by the running zombies, theyre not that dangerous.
I did find Ravenholm scary as well, especially at the very beginning when u see the sign and theres that deep scary background music, and the legs hanging from the tree.

I think it depends on what you define as 'scary'.

Doom3 was more 'jumpy'.

HL2 is more creepy in an atmospheric, psychological kind of way and like I said before, I think it gets to you more because you can relate to the surroundings. You could actually envisage being alone in that town with the wolves howling in the distance and the deralict buildings and of course the graveyard near the end. It was like something out of a very, very bad dream.

You can't relate anything in real life to being on a space station in Mars.

I hated doom 3 for many reasons. The biggest reason is that I got tired of being scared and stressed the whole game. That's not fun fo rme. Plus the AI was half retarded.

See player, throw fireball...unless he's within swatting distance.

I knew I was going to have to go through Ravenholm when Alyx showed me the tunnel "we don't go there anymore". It was pretty scary, but you gotta love dropping cars on zombies!

The first house you come to along the coast scared the crap out of me. It looks like you can't get in. The door's locked and all the walls are still there. But there's this cellar door you can smash open. I went inside and the first thing I heard was a poison headcrap. I hate them, they scare me every time. Anyway, I killed it and climbed up into the house and I could here this low breathing, kind of like a wheeze. But there was nothing there, only a locked door on the other side of the room.

I walked towards it, I could still just hear this wheeze, and all of a sudden there was a screech and one of those poison zombies pops out and started flinging poison headcrabs at me. I almost soiled myself.

I had that problem too. I could only ever play it for literally half an hour at a time because i'd start feeling sick and anxious because it's just such a chore to play.

I only actually played it to around half way through as it's just no fun at all. If I do go back and finish it then it'll be purely just to know I have.

That's exactly how I felt as well.

those ****ing trites (anyone notice a pattern? :p) just stressed the hell out of me and I quite playing a while after they came in and that was that, never went back...

hmmmm...the thing that stopped Doom 3 being scary was that after the first level everything was so predictable and you knew where the bad dudes were going to come from so in the end I just ended up laughing my nuts off at it.

On that note I think the reason ravenholm is scary is because you aren't always in a closed space like Doom 3. So it makes you feel safer being able to see further but then they screw around with that by running up walls and screaming stuff. Still ended up laughing while blowing off their heads as soon as they got to the top of the drain pipes though. =) Nice touch.....

I didn't find Doom 3 scary. Jumpy, yes, Scary, No.

The poison headcrabs though freak the shit outta me :X. And the poison zombie :X.

i'm not sure why, but this game didn't scare me that much. Maybe because i've played through the original 5 times, and headcrabs jumping at me dont scare me anymore..

yeah def scary... when stuck on the rood having depleted all my ammo.. running round with crowbar and tryiung to find things to hurl at them with the grav gun..

it's the climber zombie things that freak me out the most and have me backpeddling faster than a labour mp

Yes, very freaky. I hate fast-zombies in general... and the poison headcrabs, eek! The sounds they make alone are scary.

I didn't think Ravenholm was scary in any way shape or form. It wasn't even startling at any point. The atmosphere was great don't get me wrong, but scary? I don't think so. I'd have to say Doom 3 is about 1000 times more scary/startling than Ravenholm, not a better game, but scarier.

Half-Life 2 scary? Hmm, I scare pretty easily, but I never once had a scary moment through the entire game. Doom 3 wasn't all that scary, but definitely more so than HL2 for me.

After father grigori said 'defend yourself' well...i kinda got the creeps, as you see the fast zombies jumping in the distance....and just silence. When the shadows get close and the drain pipe but starts, i was running on adrenalin, with the shotgun double shots! The atmosphere of Ravenholm was done perfectly, everything about it, especially the big fight with all the zombies near the end :) great team work ;)

Yes, HL2 had me on edge a few times certainly! I get freaked out by poison zombies and their poison headcrabs. As has been said earlier in the thread, I remember that house on the coast where you can hear something staggering about upstairs. I climbed up, turned the corner and there was a poison zombie throwing one of his poison headcrabs right into my face :( (Anyone notice the poison zombie making a sort of laughing sound when they die?). I really hate those fast prowler zombies or whatever they're called as well, the sound they make is spine-chilling. Also, in the mineshaft directly after Ravenholm, I noticed that headcrabs are terrifying in huge numbers.

If you get taken in by the atmosphere, playing on your own in the dark, even a lone headcrab hiding somewhere in a house can scare the shit out of you.

Doom 3 was 100x scarier than HL2. Ravenholm was probably the worst area in the entire game :/. It wasn't slightly scary. Doom 3 had a lot more scary moments.

I'm a Ravenholm. I have a hard time finish it beacouse I'm freaked out so much of the fast and poison zombies.

I just want to agree that ravenholm was cool and scary. It was really intense with flaming dudes still coming for me. Maybe i am a wimp, but i was so scared playing doom3, i still have not finished the game, i conveniently found other games to play. even when i was playing, i only could play about 15minutes a stretch, it was just too dang stressful! what a baby.

The big bridge.... that freaked the shit outta me. I mean I know it's not real but it still touched into my fear of heights.... very cool!!!!

And those damn helicopters. Everytime I hear them I check my ammo and of course I have at most one rocket :(

Yeah that bridge part was very freaky!

While Half-life 2 wasn't ment to be as scary as doom3, some parts were. While one zombie behind you in the dark is kinda scary, a whole multitude of them coming out of a graveyard is horrifying (well, at least it was for me :D). That's one advantage HL2 has over Doom 3- you can actually have more than one monster on screen at a time. Anyway, those zombies in ravenholm scared the poop outta me. And those painfull human screams they make almost make me feel sorry for them....
...sorry enough to put them out of their misery. ;)

I dunno what it is about Ravenholm exactly, but at one point I found myself sprinting for the next door everytime I had to go outside, was too creeped out by the damn Jumping Zombies. I don't know why, but Doom 3 never did that for me. There was only 2 scary parts in that game, but they werent creepy.
