good lord 235 posts.

how big is this thing?

just 15 minutes, im updating mine as we speak cant wait to see what my 7800gt can do :)

Oddly enough, the problem I had with it was that I couldn't take damage... it took me a bit before I realized that all the buckshot and 9mms hitting me weren't taking health away... I tried messing around with sv_cheats and stuff, but nothing worked.

Oh well. The level's focused way more towards eye candy anyway.

Parts of the level looked like crap (ie... looking out one of the windows after you've broken it reveals a low-res rock texture... looks awful)

Same problem as in hl2 with the water moving into the skybox... either see a white line going across or the lighting is different on one of them or the texture scale. Either way the water still doesn't look good for "ocean" water... but it still looks okay.

The shader effect on the rocks looks like crap! The first thing i thought about it when i saw it was "that's not what rocks look like". Here's a picture to demonstrate:

Although i think this is just the way shaders display in games nowdays (as i have this safe effect when zooming in on water in black and white 2)

The only thing "next-gen" is HDR, and as it stands in this level is nothing more than a gimmick. More clearly seen in the light rays in the cathedral that are models, not dynamically produced. Also notice the SHARP transition to light beams when you shoot out the window... it would be more subtle than that and not like flipping a switch.

Although I liked the commentary. I'm more interested to see what mod teams will do with it... i'm guessing only the textures used in this level was re-done in HDR? I would love to see that chandaler have blue HDR around its lights with physics ala. reality engine haunted house demo.

Firstly.. What G-card you got, Secondly.. hopefully the BM:S team will use it :).. Thirdly I beefed up all my settings.. it was REALLY laggy.. but I manage to get a nice pic up.. Shiny glove :p

Did mine in 25 minutes, took it slow, screenshots and listened to the commentry. Really really impressed. Not played Dod source, but i loved the HDR in full effect. I think for the little gameplay it really was fun, thoroughly entertained, i'm very happy with this little release.

Btw spoiler below.

Is the hunter chopper once you shoot it down meant to crash into the platform you are standing on? 2nd time playing through and it flew right at me and i was scared, the floor started peeling up!

Other screenies i took, mind my pc specs are 2.7ghz P4, 512mb DDR, ati 9600XT 128mb. Very average just these pics visuals impressed me.

Screenie 1
Screenie 2
Screenie 3
and Screenie 4(beautiful eh?)

Very impressed valve, good job.

Man, when the Combine burst in the church, flank one of them left (you know, near the windows)... Best graphics EV0R :O

Radeon 9800 Pro 128 with 5.10 cats. All shaders work properly, i'm sure you can get the same effect if you walk closely to the wet rocks.

well...its available for download and yeah im downloading it...but apparently, my system does not meet the system requirements for Lost Coast ;(
i meet pretty much every requirement except of course, the CPU requirement...so i guess that means i won't be playing it til i upgrade or get a new PC altogether.

aw well.. :|

I'm not really impressed at all Low res textures in alot of spots rocks looked bad the only thing i liked is the fisherman guy , well theres always BF2 :)

Dr. Freeman don't be a n00b, you can still run the demo just click the "launch Lost Coast HDR demo".

HOLY CRAP, VAVLE OWNSERS NOW!

with this grahpical update,

all the hate i had for them has all gone, OMFG LC = CRAZY on my specs,

holly crap when they said a minimum is a 3ghz, with a x800 series, or better, they MEANT IT! they are telling the truth for once. Man my comp looks great running lost coast and lost coast looks great running on my comp.

im doing full settings with vsync on, its giving me a little video lagg so i turned my AF down to 0 instead of 16. that fixed it a little.

is it true if you get 2 gigs, it will work a lot better? would i be able to turn up my 16XAF up again if i get another 1 gig of ram.

Aww, its nice to see you've turnt happy now after 2 hours of constant arguing.

shiz!? this requires a 3ghz processor?? I thought for sure I was gonna be able to handle this thing. Ah well, I'm still gonna give it a go with my good ol' AMD 2.2ghz

edit: nvm, Im good on the requirements

I thoroughly enjoyed lost coast. just finished it. It was short and sweet. The graphics ruled. Only problem i had was that after I quick loaded the first time I endcountered the "jesus bug" where the combine corpses would be standing up with their arms out.

Ignorant statement of the day.

Theres over 1,000 people trying to download this file at once, what do you expect the servers to be? Super fast? Please.

I downloaded at peek and took me 7 mins to download. Servers dont get slow. Peoples internet gets slow.

Lost Coast was everything i expected. I love the commentary and the technology. I hope they add it all to their future games.

Potential though!

To answer Valve's question at the end of the presentation, YES.

You can actually get the game looking nice if you run at 800x600 with high models and textures, in a window. (That's on my 9800 pro 128mb :) and note the FPS)

But that's when the problems start...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0009.jpg
Wallhaxx!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0010.jpg
Seems a bit of construction is going on...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0011.jpg
Of course since I couldn't see the floor, my flashlight helped highlight the way.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0013.jpg
Notice the open plan roofing.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0014.jpg
You can get the lighting looking pretty dandy in this game....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0019.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0016.jpg
... So dandy the computer likes not rendering walls...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0020.jpg
... Or enemies (Yes those are headcrabs)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0023.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0022.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0021.jpg
But the Last boss battle was insanely hard! I didn't know the combine owned Invisiblity technology :O

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0025.jpg
Took that sucker down though. Note amazing fire effects - Couldn't tell the difference from real life!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v303/dekstar/d2_lostcoast0027.jpg
And then I watched the helicopter fall into the vaste ocean of sludge.

I'm going to play some more tomorrow! night night all. :)

heheh. I love my X800 XT. This game is simply gorgeous- I can't wait for all the HDR updates and mods.

Erm.. i went to the Advanced settings for the graphics, and the HDR mode wasn't selectable! It said: NONE

Am i alone?

they should of made LC with a VST optoin,

then we can compare if having more ram is better or more cpu power with 2 comps having identical settings

Fan-f-ing-tastic. The commentary was laughably buggy though. Half of the triggers didnt go so I ended up noclipping through most of the level. Oh well, its nice to get these little updates every once and a while. Points for ValvE.

I don't know if somebody has posted this yet but i found an interesting bug. If you put the commentaries ON, then at the start of the map, activate the commentary at your left (the 2nd one). It will start to show you half of the screen without HDR and the other half with HDR. Now when it does this, press escape, then new game. The split screen will stay there and you will be able to play Loast Coast with half HDR and half without. Interesting imo....
