Portal IS set in the Half Life universe, the possibility of Chell appearing is there, however I believe a Valve employee said that, "we have no games currently including Shepard but we would like to come back to him." Or something along those lines, I could be wrong though. However Chell and Aperture Science, Portal and GLadOS are set around the same time as the current story arc. Episode two even mentions Aperture Science. They do exist within the series universe and are heavily connected, that is a definite.

1. G-man is NOT Gordon, vice versa. For one, it would make NO sense at all. For two, Gordon's eyes are green, g-man's are blue. For 3, g-man is the name of the MODEL, not the character. The character does not have a name. Also, Valve isn't going to leave any blatantly obvious clues in the series for us to figure out who/what g-man is before the big reveal... that would completely ruin the motivation to keep following the story. SO STOP BRINGING IT UP!!!!!

2. There is no cat. There's no cat model... there's not cat ghost... there is simply NO CAT. The dialog about the cat was for laughs. It was to simply carry on the notion that Kleiner is somewhat of an absent minded professor. Any time Barney brings it up, it's just to carry on the gag. I'll say again... THERE IS NO CAT!!!!!!

There was a cat, we just don't know what happened to it. Probably died. Saying that there is no cat just because it doesn't appear in the game is just silly. The 7-hour war didn't appear in the game either.

I don't think there's anything particularly important about the cat, but I definitely think it existed.

3. The original Half-Life was made long before the story or any of the characters in Half-Life 2 were ever even conceived. This is why there are about 50 Kleiners, Barneys, Elis and Magnussons. They were not important characters in Half-Life 1, just disposable generic ally models. Therefore, nothing you find in Half-Life 1 is purposefully foreshadowing any of the events in HL2. The picture in Gordons locker? That might be his niece. Or his daughter. Or his baby sister. Remember, Gordon started out as Ivan the Space Biker... I don't think Valve ever intended to take the story in the direction they took it. That picture is not Alyx. Alyx did not exist when HL1 was made.

Yes and no, mostly yes. I agree that Gordon and a less-developed Barney were the only characters that really existed in HL1 and were brought into HL2. I think Laidlaw probably did have some bigger picture idea on the G-Man and a reason for Xen to be like it was (i.e. some inklings of the Combine, not fully formed ideas). It's good practice for a writer to have a more fully developed world and story than makes it into the final work. I appreciate it anyways, it makes thing richer and more consistent.

Oh, and btw, there is NO evidence to support the idea that Chell from Portal will play a role in Episode 3. GlaDOS probably will, as well as the Portal device, but for all we know, Chell is dead.

Dead wrong. Gabe has said that Chell would interact with existing HL2 characters and become important to the story. He didn't mention Episode 3, but at some point in the future, she'll be back.

Either way, for what reason would Chell have to travel to the Borealis? Are we to assume that there was only one portal device ever created, and that Chell became some all knowing rebel and took the portal device into the arctic with her to keep the technology safe? Or is it more likely that Alyx and Gordon will discover the portal device on the abandoned Borealis and that it'll play an important part in escaping the ship as it's sinking?

Barney was the model name. Barney Calhoun was officially named in Blue Shift. Reviving the old doesn't prevent seeing something new. The Hunters and poison antlions were new. The radar was new. Magnusson was a new character, developed from a stub of a character we met in HL1. References to earlier in the story are good, because they create a sense of unity. Given the vast difference in setting between HL1 and HL2, threads to connect the stories help make the whole much more cohesive.

It's quite clear to me that you pretty much stopped reading at the point where I said "There's no cat" because I KNOW I explained what I was saying, I literally said "the car does not physically (or supernaturally) manifest itself anywhere in the game". Yes, there have been people (these 10 year old noobs) asking about a hidden cat character model, or talking about Lamar really being that cat, or talking about the cat stalking Barney through the game.

Shepard's story was a minor side story with an entire secondary race of aliens. That entire game was CLEARLY just a secondary vision of Half-Life. You start including ANOTHER main characters back story involving the resonance cascade, and you will make the current story arc a complete mess. Shepard in Episode 3? Very, very unlikely. But Gabe did say that HL isn't going to end at Episode 3...

Yeah, they named him Barney because of a similar appearance to Barney Fife. I guess maybe it wasn't AFTER the game was made, more likely during, but whatever, point is... You'll be so busy being introduced to Chell, to Shepard or whomever else, you'll have little time to focus on the task/story at hand.

As has been quoted, Valve want to introduce Shephard back into the game, because they know the fans liked him. Barney (an unspoken character!) was introduced into the game back in Half-Life 2! It was a different vision, yes, but it was very inspirational in understanding how Half-Life worked, and the story behind it. While it might not be Shephard who is involved, they could still create some form of expansion which might answer so many questions. Who are you to decide that someone can't be in Valve's games? If I wanted to dispel myths about Chell or Shephard I would've listed them in the original post. The only thing I said about Chell was that there's no evidence to support the idea that she'll be in Ep3. Why did I bring that up? Because of all the people talking about "When Gordon meets Chell, WHEN he meets Chell in Episode 3" etc. If you're not guilty of this, you have no reason to think on it.

No, one extra character is NOT too much to handle, one extra story line is. Magnusson doesn't have a huge back story, his is pretty much parallel to Kleiners, and he was previously just a generic scientist, therefore he doesn't require much of an explanation. Shephard would.

As I said in my previous quote, you didn't. You were the first to go on the offensive, when you could've prevented this situation from arising by being resonable and friendly. The idea behind it was a perfectly logical one, if not a very good one. If you'd gone about this in a different way, a benevolent, omniscient mod might've even gone about stickying it for you, forever engraved as a warning for all noobs entering this forum.

For one who accuses me of ignorance, you don't seem to understand my sentences. Shephard was never encountered by Gordon Freeman in Half-Life, and while there are a few appearances of Freeman to Shephard, Freeman himself never sees Shephard. So similarly in Episode Three, it might be the case that there is an unseen motive behind many things which are then resolved when you play as Shephard in an expansion to Half-Life 2, showing you how Shephard did stuff. For all you know, it might've been Shephard who "put the clock on the trainstation".

And no, I'm not critisizing you for spelling it wrong, merely pointing out that if you want to argue about Half-Life and call me ignorant, at least do so with the right spelling.

Play the expansion packs again. Valve's logo is quite evident, showing you that clearly Adrian and Barney are both Valve's intellectual property, and similarly you could say, so is Rosenburg.

Valve backed Gearbox, helping them through the modding with the storyline, and thus they do, essentially, own the intellectual property of Valve already. Opposing Force and Blue Shift are both in canon, unlike any of the other mods produced. It wouldn't be the case if they weren't, but Valve have stated that they are. So Adrian is as likely to appear as Barney (except for the fact he's been "removed" from the storyline).

From all the argument and speculation around about the Gman, it is evident that the Gman's motives are not entirely clear. I was not telling you not to theorise, but merely stating that while you can state that Shephard is "out of the picture", we don't really know what the Gman wants, and how far he is going to go to get it. As has been stated, you were the first to go on the offensive. While I can find "noobs" irritating, I still find them almost cute, and a necessity to the community, and thus I am going to go on the defensive for them. Valve didn't once before. Gearbox did. Sure, neat story line... but like I said, how many story lines do you want to intersect on a single game?

And in a single game, for Valve to successfully intersect every canon storyline, I would put everything down and worship them as the supreme masters of Gaming. It's not easy to do, so it won't be done, and I wouldn't want to see it done, if it was done badly, but somehow, I'm sure, if they wanted to, they could. Blue Shift already has been intersected, and was done in Half-Life 2. So that just leaves Shephard and Chell. Personally I believe Shephard, as an old character, already stated to be Canon has a greater probability of being included into any further developments than Chell who has only a few references to the Half-Life storyline.

Was once the Space Biker. Became Gordon Freeman before release. As did Barney. The fact is that at the release, Barney was Barney and Gordon was Gordon. Eli and Kleiner were never conceived as part of the storyline, and yet they became part of it anyway, after Half-Life was created. Barney was originally the nickname, but the point is that Barney is called Barney, and that is his name.

I don't believe Portal will ever have a sequel. It was a game more designed for an idea. A different way of thinking. It was created to make you think... with portals. I really think people should stop considering it as entirely canon with the Half-Life universe until Valve state that it is, or include it entirely into their plot.

No, one extra character is NOT too much to handle, one extra story line is. Magnusson doesn't have a huge back story, his is pretty much parallel to Kleiners, and he was previously just a generic scientist, therefore he doesn't require much of an explanation. Shephard would.

Again, Barney was originally a generic security guard, but he was developed into a character. And yet he still appeared in Half-Life later. As did the vortigaunts, your previous all-time enemy. A HECU appearing would not need too much explaining.

When you start up the games, you see the Valve logo. Gearbox was given permission by Valve to operate within their IP. They did so with the guidance of Marc Laidlaw (ensuring that they couldn't do whatever the hell they wanted) and it had to receive Valve's seal of approval. Gearbox was hired out to create more HL content simply because Valve was preoccupied with their sequel. Everything is owned by Valve.

Remember Condition Zero? Remember how many developers Valve yanked it from due to concerns of quality? The same thing could have happened to Gearbox if the expansions weren't up to snuff. They are allowed to do this because, again, they are the owners of the IP.

Anything Gearbox made can be (and has been) used by Valve if they ever feel they want to. This ranges from the nuking of Black Mesa, to Barney's name, to Race X. If you really have such confusion about this, go email Valve and see what they have to say about it.

In the Mark Laidlaw vault, he says, "I wasn't very close to the creation of the expansion packs, and much more concerned with how to move the story forward and open up the universe; so I only take the games created by Valve into consideration when I am working on the story."

Most people probably interpret that and similer responses to mean that they are not canon.

The issue of Gearbox content being canon is a wholly different one from it being owned by Valve.

There are definitely things like Race X that have this strange limbo status. They might be irrelevant or they might not be canon outright. In the end, the two states are pretty much the same: They're not taken into consideration. But regardless of whatever they want to do with the content, it is still rightfully theirs. So if in the future they feel like they might want to implement it if they think it makes for a good story or if they find good use for the characters, they're entirely able to do so.

In a nutshell, IP ownership is a complete non-factor when discussing their canonicity.
