According to sources at Valve, Half-Life has gone gold and has been shipped off for duplication. This should mean that it will arrive in stores within 3-4 weeks.
You start the 3D action game as a lowly research assistant working on a top secret project in a converted missile silo. An accident fractures the fabric of space-time and causes hordes of creatures from another dimension to drop on into our world. With monsters everywhere, and your fellow scientists proving to be tasty alien food, you decide to leave. However, wouldn’t you know it – much of the security system is still functioning, forcing you to scavenge keys and codes.
Half-Life has garnered extensive attention for its innovative use of the Quake engine, and for its enhanced artificial intelligence. According to Valve, and borne out somewhat by the five-level OEM version released in September, the creatures you face in the game will react intelligently, providing a level of challenge heretofore unseen in most 3D shooters. Certainly, the hype around the game has emphasized the AI, as well as the detailed environments and extensive modifications to the Quake engine.
Sierra and Valve have had some difficulty in getting the game out the door; it was expected to ship in 1997 but obviously missed that window by a mile. The company is assuring gamers that the title will be on store shelves by the Thanksgiving weekend at the end of November.
