The rules are pretty simple:
1) Don't grief. You don't need a definition of griefing. Use your common sense.
2) Don't steal.
3) Don't build in the spawn area
Otherwise, go off and have fun! See the world!
Beware, though - monsters will spawn at night and in any suitably dark place - prepare your accomodations accordingly!
Tools will now deteriorate and throwing them on the floor will not reset them! So you will go through a lot of tools now. However, help is at hand. If you type "/kit basics" then you will be given a set of diamond tools. You can only get a new kit every 24 hours. If you run out before then, it's tough - craft your own!
