That is an interesting theory Bob, but if you'll remember the gunships that come out of the combine portal have pulse weapons too.

To me that suggests that the Combine used the outward design of a proven human gun when adapting some of the pulse weapon technology for (trans)human use.

Striders and gunships (which use pulse weaponry) are not earth-based. They are standard combine war units.
