Played the beta yesterday. It's okay, just another Halo game. Not a big fan of the series so I can't say much. There also only seems to be two maps in the rotation at the moment and boy do they get boring.

How did u get in early If I may ask?

There were several different ways to get codes yesterday. Got mine through the Microsoft Expert Zone affiliation.

stormy, ever thoughtful and witty as ever. obviously you too are in the F&F beta then, huh? i mean judging the game right now, three days before it's actually playable, you must be. right?

Its just yet ANOTHER reharsh of the same old shit apart from this time there are more clown aliens to kill.

Except for, you know, stealth kills and armor upgrades, such as jetpacks and that new shield thing.

ah, so you have played it then?

that's all i'm asking. if you say yes, then fair enough, but i don't believe you have just yet.

You irrationally reject any colour scheme that involves purple. Got it.

I just find halo very bland. I can understand why people liked the first game, even the second. At least then it was quite fresh. But now there are so many more games doing what the did a hella lot better.

They need to let the franchise die and do something new.

And attack/defend gametypes. Halo has been crying ut for these since the first. It's going to be awesome :)

But now there are so many more games doing what the did a hella lot better.

I can't think of another fps that does single player combat as well as Halo. Multiplayer wise it's one of the best around if you're into arcady action.

the funny thing is that it's the first three games that are very, very similar, and the latest release, ODST, and (seemingly) reach that are pushing new directions. i wouldn't be surprised if you hadn't played ODST and i now know for sure by your pussyfooting of my question that you haven't played reach either. doing ''something new'' is what they are doing right now, it's just in the halo universe as, you know, they're kind of attached to it. you don't like it, that's fine, but give the new ones a chance at least.

Well I've played it. It's extremely similar to the other games. The whole "class" system does nothing at all. As far as I know you can't actually customize the loadout and the special class abilities are very minor in terms of gameplay. Jetpack, Sprint, etc. all last only a few seconds. The credits and armor customization is pretty bland. You can change the helmet, shoulder pads, and chest but the differences in armor is so minor you can't notice when you're playing. They don't seem to offer any stat/armor bonuses either.

The biggest thing that sticks out is new weapons. They finally added quite a few things in this department. The game is still fun to play with buddies but it definitely isn't a whole new game. This probably should have been the ODST multiplayer.

Not to mention that this is almost definitely the last Halo game that Bungie will make since they just switched to Activision and Microsoft still holds the rights.

Being able to sprint, roll, go invisible, use a shield or fly about the map doesn't change gameplay much? Tweaking single weapon can affect gameplay a whole lot in multiplayer - these changes sound like they could be significant. You may right, but i'll reserve judgement for the finished product.

whilst i'll respect your opinion here, how much have you played of the beta right now? i mean maybe you've just been in rubbish games or haven't properly adjusted to the changes to use them in the right manner for the right situation - maybe, but from what i can tell and from numerous videos watched, they look pretty major. like warbie, i'll reserve judgment.

Well the timer for the abilities are fairly short. You also can't use them in key points of the objective based games (Can't use them while holding a flag, oddball, etc.) Best of all people don't seem to use the abilities very often. In most cases they hurt you because you can't shoot and don't have any offense while using them. Flying through the air with the jetpack will just get you killed because most everyone sees that.

Jetpack - Good for getting on tops of buildings and hard to reach places. Controls make it hard to aim/shoot while flying.

Sprint - Not much to say about this one. Will get you places faster but would be nice if you could use in CTF or objective games

Shield
- Easy to counter. You can stand right behind the person shielding themselves and melee when they come out. A well timed grenade will blow them up as well. Good if you want to be bait.

Invisibility - Pretty easy to see when they are moving. Works best when you are just sitting in one spot waiting for someone. It doesn't last long enough to camp somewhere though.

King of the Warthog sounds amazing, and also exactly like what my friends and I wanted back in the original Halo. If I get this game, I fear I will never be productive again.

some of the new stuff announced this week sounds amazing. forge world looks great, and the new firefight vs sounds very interesting.

really looking forward to this.

I was incredibly god damn skeptical about this. Halo 2 and 3 really left a bad taste in my mouth, but ever since playing through the Reach beta I've been pretty damn impressed by how good the MP is now. The campaign is even looking pretty damn awesome and Firefight 2.0, Forge World, and all the other crap they've announced have really got me excited for this. I never thought I'd be excited for a Halo game, but this really is looking to be a great game.

I think Halo Reach is just going to be another Halo 3; could've been great, but failed again.

I do think this could be the best Halo so far, alot of it looks familiar, but move away from the super soldier thing, youre no longer Master Chief, youve got that massive Spartan war etc, the lore is coming into more than ever etc, and thats pretty cool.

But I think Halo from the onset has always been appreciated by these guys who are just jacked on testosterone, I remember back when the very first Halo was released and it was huge all of a sudden out of the blue, and I'd be at a party where everyone would be drunk etc, and some guys would be like ''I gotta go back and play Halo!''

I just get that feeling that these people are like ''Yeah! F the world, im Master Chief and Im stomping on this and that, and here come a bunch of frigging purple trolls and they're going gabada gabada!''

And Im playing those parts in the previous Halo games and Im just sat there thinking ''Oh I just dont care, im so bored, I dont care about master chief or these weird, generic aliens.''

When Halo 3 came out I thought this is it, Ive got to play this, this is the equivelant of CoD for the 360, so I recruited some mates at Uni who loved Halo so we could ply through co-op on the campaign because I knew if someone was there with me I could keep going, and a whole saturday I played with them grinding through. Finally I asked how much longer of this is left with all these giant generic camera angles and yada yada, they were like ''oh about 4 hours'' I just quit ''F' it, done, I cant go any further with this.''

And theyve talked about in this one how its story-driven, cinema camera angles, improved combat and the way that all the characters have back-stories etc etc etc, and it sounds slightly more interesting.

But when I played Halo 3 again, just so I could say I finished it, I got to the big anus level, flood stuff or whatever, which was a big part of the game, I didnt finish it in the end, I dont care, it just wasnt compelling enough. What I did think was that Halo is very well tailored and appealing to the console gamers.

But I think in terms of the pacing, its completely MONOTONOUS; you have these giant set pieces that are interspersed with these long stretches of completely repetitive content, you just shoot every one-by-one, the enemies hardly change, there's about 3 varieties of what you kill, only the environments change.

I didnt feel I was doing anything different in hour 7 than I was doing in minute 7, as there's no sense of progression. They do generally ramp up the scale of the battle, like they'll add a huge ''boss'', open up the battlefield and throw in a vehicle section here and there, and yeah its fun to get those moments, but compared to it's other FPS rivals, its just too few and far between.

And in ODST it was just like that; Im playing another damn Halo game where NOTHING happens. The vulnerability in ODST was nice where you werent master chief, you were just an ODST with a crappy overshield, you kind of were more connected with the conflict as you had to be more mindful of what you were doing, instead of ''whatever, Im master chief, Im doing whatever I want, Im a solo super soldier, I can blow up the world''.

The only reason I believe Master Chief is held up in such high acclaim with Halo fans is because he's a complete badass, but at the same time he's just a soldier, and he's quiet. If anything he's a badass, but a subtle badass, he never speaks like Freeman, and that makes it easier to fill his shoes. I for one am all for over-the-top action in games, but the heroes and/or protagonists are usually ****holes and you cant relate, or find it very hard to. Master Chief isnt like Max Payne where the character is so full of emotion where you have to rise to that level to feel a connection, which is why I believe his character is identifiable (Master Chief's).

As I dont own a 360 anymore, I wont be getting Halo Reach, but I can confess to playing all the previous Halo games at some point. I never bought ODST but I did rent it (thanks LoveFilm) as I had no control over what and when I recieved my DVDs, I just added it for a ''why not atleast try it before I mock it'' whim.

I can see this being the biggest Halo ever released, but I cant see it smashing any records or coming close to any other FPS release around the same date, or atleast for that month. Actually its out in September so nothing to compete with really...ok so game of the quarter then.

But I think Halo from the onset has always been appreciated by these guys who are just jacked on testosterone

I like the series because it's the only one that offers a decent challenge and some depth to combat in single player. It's almost cliche to argue the games are only worth playing on heroic and above (especially Halo 3, which is by far the easiest and only really shines on Legendary with a few skulls added), but it's true. Strip away the training wheels and the balance and variety that other shooters lack becomes apparent. Co-op :)p Samon) - be it campaign or Firefight - is also about as good as it gets. Add multiplayer, Forge and Theatre modes - Forge and Theatre modes should become a genre standard btw - and you get a pretty complete package.

There's plenty for fans of arcade shooters to be excited about with Halo. Especially when the alternatives are CoD and CoD dressed up in different clothes!

Slayer Pro. No shields. No ballistic or energy weapons. No melee weapons. Forklifts only. 200% speed. Zero gravity.

Final Destination.

*pat**pat* there there :p

i agree with you tho, I used to really like halo back in the day. I loved the first one (one of my fav games ever) and carried on with the series riding the hype wave of halo 2 where i was slightly disappointed in the end result, then riding the hype wave of halo 3 to see just how it would end and really enjoyed seeing how it all played out.

But now that the story of this saga is over i dont feel compelled to play it at all. I always like to play games more for their story than anything, i'm not saying halo's was good by any objective means but it was enjoyable that i had to see it through.

Now that halo 3 is over we are just left with prequels (wars and reach) and interequels (ODST). Idk if its because i just lost interest over time or maybe it was only halo's story that kept me coming back to each game but i cant get into it anymore. I never played wars, i had a complete sense of apathy with ODST and the reach beta just played the same as halo 3 but with perk... - I mean abilities :p

I'll play reach to see all the fuss and again to see the story but i wont buy it i'll rent it (thanks lovefilm again!). If it does surprise me i would be more than happy to buy it but i just dont think it will :|

The worst part is between both of the typical action fps mainstays this year (black ops and reach) if i had to pick one to play over the other i would pick black ops. I actually feel dirty for saying that when one is its series' swansong and the other is just another game churned out the factory every year.

*prepares to be lynched*

PS: yea saleswise it will sell by the truckload but i dont think it will match halo 3 numbers due to smaller marketing and the increased competition.

man, these days i actually wish the people with more constructive halo criticisms came back and said what they wanted to say - i can't take some of you guys seriously anymore. GET SOME STRUCTURE and a POINT to say already.

i think the funniest complain is the tired-old whine about the environments. i've said it a few times now that a covenant ships are repetitive for a reason; it's a military vessel, why would it look like a fun house around every corner, but i would take that aesthetic over an environment that is fixated around something everyday like an actual navy warship or a US army base that we've all seen in countless other war games and films. i'll take the blunt brutalist architectural style of the forerunner with their minimalist design then another weather beaten industrial complex or factory. obviously this is all going to be opinion on what you like and personally i'm a bigger fan of fictional make believe, esp. these days when titles like COD are taking every single ''gritty'' location they can and inserting half arsed stories and waves of boring opponents (the human) in them.

Exaaaactly. Halo has a specific thematic style. It has ALWAYS been about clean shapes, angular architecture, primary colours, and a sort of "grand minimalism". Everything plays into this; the Covenant vessels, the Forerunner architecture, the sweeping grassy vistas, even the comparatively gritty Human architecture and technology is smooth and clean compared to most games. It's just what Halo is. Complaining about this like it inexplicably needs to be changed is like complaining that a Mercedes-Benz doesn't look like a Ferrari. Too bad, it's not supposed to. (And don't read too far into that analogy, price and capability aren't criteria I was including). If anything, even if you hate Halo for its gameplay, you should appreciate it for being one of what, four? AAA series that hasn't given up and slapped brown-and-bloom onto every rock and character model.

I had pretty much lost my faith for for the series after the third game. I liked the story though, but neither singleplayer nor multiplayer was as fun as it used to. (alltough Halo 2 on xbox live had it's moments, zombies anyone?). ODST was a step in the right direction but still...

But when i played the reach beta, i was completely blown away. It was pure awesome! Im really hyped for this, forge, firefight and campaign. It looks really fun. Can't wait too play some wicked custom games!
Forklifts <3

Capture the Forklift - Whoever gets the forklift to their base first wins

Capture the Pallet - Players must use a forklift to pick up a pallet and drive it to their base to win

the best part is when people lump ODST as being ''just another halo'' when really, it's not. for the design and development timeframe of the game, it's a unbelievably well made progression and i can see great things about to happen with reach as it's inevitably taking steps from what they did differently in ODST.

was looking forward to seeing the intro in better quality - the screen cam footage alone a few days ago had me hyped, this is just great.

just so you know, the intro video doesn't spoiler anything: it's the same footage as the E3 trailer they released last year, only the dialogue is changed, some things are added in and some taken out such the covenant frigate in the clouds as at this point in the game, you and noble team aren't aware of the invasion, you are sent out to investigate a relay disturbance suspected to be caused by insurrectionists.

Holy Snapdragons... that's one of the best vidoe game ads I've ever seen.
