I have an old IDE drive, and a new SATA drive. I have installed windows on the new hard drive and installed all the drivers and set it up.
I figured id try and format my old hard drive so I can use it for storage, I also don't want the windows installation to conflict or anything, at the end of the formatting process it gave me an error saying windows was unable to complete the format.
Now when I try and boot windows from my freshly installed SATA drive it tells me there is a file missing - press ctrl alt del to continue.
BUT when I boot from my old IDE drive (which is empty, as I tried to manually delete everything on it) it gives me the option to load windows from the old drive or the new drive, when I choose the new drive windows boots perfectly.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!????????w3RT JI[ERFNKZOXWRHJHIOP(hitting keyboard)

Why the hell do you have windows installed on BOTH drives?

Actually wait - you said you formatted your old drive, but then you said you booted from it after that? You can't boot from a drive that you just wiped clean, so what the hell are you on about?

If you formatted it from windows on your hd try doing it from the windows cd instead. I think the problem you are having has something to do with the bios, most likely the boot order. Try changing some settings.

Read again....
I tried to format it through windows but it doesnt work so i just deleted everything on it to make space.
No it doesn't boot, it tries to. The only way to start windows on my new HDD is to let it try and boot up the old one as it gives the an option to boot from either drives. When I take my old HDD out then it doesnt boot windows, it says theres a file missing. Which is bullshit because it works when I boot the alternative way.
I cant wipe it from windows installation because the windows installation now crashes after loading.

.... When I boot from the new drive it says there is a file missing. when it tried to boot from the old drive it lets me choose which windows I want to load. When I choose the old HDD it says there is a different file missing (all of them!!!! :\) but it lets me boot my new HDD from this menu.

OK, you are still not making too much sense. You are jumping around with your story. Right after you said the format gave an error, you should have said that you manually deleted everything, not later on in the story. But anyway it doesn't make a difference to what I said, because why the hell are you trying to boot from any empty drive?(formatted or deleted, it's still empty).

Anyway, here is what should be a fail-safe way to make it work. Remember to ALWAYS unplug your PC BEFORE you unplug/plug in things like HDD's.

* Unplug your old HD that isn't working. BOTH plugs - power and IDE. Leave only the drive that is to be your new C:.

* Format and install windows onto that drive.

* Once that is done, re-boot and check in the BIOS for the HD priority settings. Remember them.

* Check that it is working fine. Switch off PC.

* Plug in your IDE HD, and format that using windows, NOT the install CD. (Tell me you DIDN'T use the CD to try to format that drive once your other drive was set up in the first place, right?)

* Check the BIOS settings to make sure that your SATA drive (C drive) still has boot priority.

* All done.

Shouldn't be hard.

Your sig makes everything you say seem crazy.. Like a list, then touch my body at the end. But you're right about what to do.

What file is it missing?
All of them. Don't confuse him. He has already spent days on this when he could have just spent one hour doing what I just posted. Don't make him waste more time by searching for missing files.

I havent formatted the hard drive BECAUSE IT WOULDNT FORMAT IT.
Im making sense, but this issue doesn't
It just completely defies logical reason.

Im not wanting to spend another 3 hours setting up the PC from scratch again, I will try doing a windows repair and reinstalling service pack 2 or something. And take the IDE out.

Either your HD is stuffed, or you are doing something wrong. Those are your two options for the reason why it won't format.

As for the rest of it, you can spend another few days trying to repair your problem, or you could fix it in an hour by doing what I said, minus the IDE drive. No-one said it would be fun, but it's the best way to do it quickly, and guarantee it works properly.

But who knows. You have asked for advice but you don't want to take it when it is offered. You don't seem to want to listen to reason either. I don't really care if you don't fix your PC, but I hate it when people ask for help and get people to spend time on their problems, only to refuse the help offered, and defy common sense.

You're welcome... oh wait - you didn't appreciate the effort....

Oh well.

I agree with Shasta. It sounds like its pretty mucked up, so you could either just do what he said and take a little time to do it right, OR you could spend countless hours (days?) trying to figure out what went wrong. Believe me, I've done it both ways before. Don't take that out of context. Anyways its up to you, obviously

Ive not spend days trying to solve it. I haven't done anything I've been too busy.
Stop trolling. I know how to use/build/modify PC's just this hard drive is behaving stupidly.
Purposely misreading my messages then trying to suggest I am stupid = trolling
I may have indirectly suggested that I wanted help, not necessarily from a patronising, elitist prick.

Here's a review of the confusing issue.

SATA HD - when given boot priority does NOT boot windows, claims there is a file missing.
IDE HD - Has NOT been formatted, but the files have been deleted to make room for storage and/or possible formatting at a later date.

Currently - I can load windows from the SATA hard drive by letting the IDE try and boot (why it does that, no one knows) and choosing the most recent windows version from the subsequent menu.

If anyone can help me by explaining how this situation has arose, then I will appreciate it (it could be possible to sort it out without having to start over) . If not then I will have to format both drives and just do a fresh install again when I have some time.
I may give the recovery console a go at some point.

Alright, here's where I stop helping. I wasn't trolling, and neither was Shasta. If you know how to use/build/modify PCs, then you'll know as well as I do that the problems you're having could be any number of things. Windows can be exceptionally pissy when you're installing it on a new HD when the old one's still present, so God knows what the ACTUAL problem is. However, since you've only JUST installed Windows on the new HD and deleted everything off the old one, you've got nothing to lose, so there's no sense in hunting around for the culprit when the easiest thing would just be to start over (following Shasta's instructions, of course). I didn't imply that you've already spent days working on this, I was merely suggesting that you heed Shasta's advice before it ends up like that.

Neither me nor Shasta was being elitist, nor suggesting you were stupid, nor being patronizing; we were just trying to help you resolve your problem as quickly as possible with the least possible headache.

Good luck though, apparently you don't need our help.

HERE'S a review of the "confusing" issue for YOU:

I don't give a sh*t about your problem any more.

We were trying to help you, NOT flame you. What kind of an idiot can't work THAT out? We spent alot of time trying to work out what the hell you were trying to say, just so we could offer some help.

And I'm happy to tell you: I have realised what your problem is (apart from being a dickhead), and it is a relatively common windows flaw. But after the way you have acted in here, you can just wallow in your own misery now.

F*ck off.

Put it in the freezer

Edit: I'll buy it off you for $5 so I can fix it and find your collection of tranny porn.
