The polics forum ...probably the fastest growing forum at HL2.net (but what the hell do I know, I'm just visiting) the extreme polarisation of the right and left here is so apparent that people seem to draw a line in the sand with each post they make. I truely believe that if this was a face to face forum we'd probably have come to blows by now ...not so much on my part, but I just seem to piss off a lot of you radical righties :naughty:

So has this section influenced where you are on the political scale? I think for me it hasnt exactly changed my mind but it has rooted me more firmly in the "liberal" camp ...although I hate labels as I've never really considered myself liberal ....I'm me...I thought everyone thinks the way I do :)

please vote truthfully and then explain what has changed

edit: damn I meant to add 2 more sections to the poll

the two extra choices are:

I'm slightly more pigeonholed as "liberal" than before

I'm slightly more pigeonholed as "conservative" than before

I'd appreciate it if a moderator could update the poll with those 2 additions

it has made me prouder to be a liberal.

i did get some intersting viewpoints though.

prepares for this thread to become a flame fest :flame:

yeah, before it used to be good discussions..

then it went onto flamed discussions

now its just turned onto 1 on 1 arguments and squabbles :(

me same as always - left of centre libertarian, egalitarian, democracy lover
right of centre and conservative economically, pro-social capitalism

liberal capitalist i guess
in europe btw the term liberal is never an insult and not even a label so the language barrier may confuse those from across the atlantic
i'm in european terms quite conservative about alot of things but american conservatism is terrifying

same in canada ..it took me awhile to realise that when americans called me a liberal it wasnt a term of endearment :)

I agree ...I think american conservatism is unlike other conservative parties the world wide in that it's far more, for lack of a better word, conservative

I truely believe that if this was a face to face forum we'd probably have come to blows by now

I wonder what the outcome would be.

almost all europeans would vote for the 'liberal' democrat if they were americans but thats because in european terms the democrats are conservatives
In Ireland politics are dominated by two parties both of whom are conservative (by european standards) and differ only by the degree of their social capitalism
the labour party here is very centrist and 3/4 of all professionals are in trade unions
i was shocked at the figures for trade union membership in the US - less than 20%
whereas its often a condition of joining a firm in europe that you join a union

nice, that's real mature of you bodacious ..funny how to people like you, brawn is everything ..no wonder you're a soldier .... although it doesnt matter cuz you wont be physically strong forever ..and then you'll have to rely on your wits alone ...that alone is worth whatever you could dish out. I'm no slouch, I'm not a hippy, and I'm not a tree hugger ..I've danced quite a few times... but my strength lies in my mind ..physical blows heal, mental blows last a life time ..far more satisfying

Besides you'd probably come packing

Your poll needs one more option: "The opinions voiced in the politics forum has made me wonder about the sanity of internet users"
Thats the one I would have opted for.

Took the words right out of my mouth.

not all the surprising ..like all of your ilk you depend more on physical intimidation than on your wits. Courage for you comes at the end of barrel ..too bad you dont have the courage of your convictions to set you free

Bodacious said:
I don't need strength or wits. All I need is my trigger finger. If not for a gun, for a tazer. Personally, I would opt for a tazer. I would rather watch you scream than kill you.

veiled threat? ..people like you are exactly why planes tend to fall from the sky in your part of the world

hahahahaha. What you say is laughable at best.

that's a pretty weak retort, not that I expected any better

It's bad enough that most polls are "marmite polls", in which the options are usually "I hate it and think it's awful" and "I love it and it's the best thing ever" with no degrees in between.

But now, we've got a poll in which the only option is "yes".

Great.

I was a young idealist, with optimistic views on life - I wanted to change the world for the better, to make sure every young kid in the world got shelter, education and three meals a day.

I emerged from this forum but a shell of my former self, holding deep hatred and cynical attitude to all of humanity. Woe betide all of the Politics forum participants, you have unleashed my dark character...

Ok, so I'm more of a centrist, having taken a lot of views on board from both sides of the spectrum :E

Where's the option for "No"?

It hasn't changed my opinions but it has made me more informed.

I myself haven't changed too much, but I've become better at playing Devil's Advocate. I also have learned a hell of a lot more about human nature.

i like the politics forum
its good fun and a damn good education

The politics forum has made me realize one thing

The world hates us

Well according to kmack I'm just "a 15 year old with no job with rich parents who feed me all the viewpoints I have" (despite the fact that they are completely opposite me)

I've become more conservative, because all these liberal douchebags make me realize how important it is to be conservative.

wait that's not one of the options ...mmmm maybe a mod will include it just for you

cry me a river

Can't vote. I can't say I've become more or less liberal because of these forums. I've always had these views of mine. However, I can say that I've become more aggressive in defending my views "because all these conservative douchebags make me realize how important it is to be liberal." ;)

Pfft I'm not partisan.

Stupid American politics and it's labelling - ****ing stupid if you ask me.. liberal is deemed as an insult 'pink commie' etc, but on the flipside, the 'rightwing nutjob' and conservative is an insult.

Silly silly people :)

i just wish that my personal beliefs wouldnt make me a "defeatist, or liberal whiner, or the various other things im called. why cant i just think things based on my feelings and not fall into a group. im liberal, but that doesnt make me a flag hating, freedom slapping, defeatist, commi, unless of course you ask a conservative  . i think what i think because it is what i believe is true and right, not because it fits into a political agenda.

It has certainley Influenced my position on certain issues. It has also made me despise the extreme of the right and the left. I was a centrist before, and now I just about disagree with everyone ( or at least the reason or the way they go about presenting their opinion )...so I am even more of a centrist now.

and I feel the same way just on the other side of the fence..go figure...

what I feel this forum has done for me...well it has made me all the more sure that people in general are assholes...whatever side they are on..

personally I think that the politics forum should be burned and all memories of it erased..some of these stupid grudges..damn!!!

no matter how fact filled, every damn thread is some kind of pissing contest within 2-3 posts..

quit looking for differences and start looking for similarities! find the common ground we can all stand on..

Did you have to make the poll about liberal and conservative?

what would you have me make a poll about instead? there's no quicker way to differentiate between the right and the left. well at least not in such a way that americans would get my meaning ...people in the US wear their political affiliations like a badge of honour ...which is not the case in most of the industrialized world

see what I mean...people constantly making GENERALIZATIONS about americans, when most of the time if someone (american or not)makes a generalization of your beliefs/country.."OMFG you dare call me a _____?!?"

whats the "rabid lefty solution" to everything? here in america,it involves tree hugging,VW bus driving, granola smoking...:) (joking)

isn't it all (both sides) pretty stupid and pointless at times?

BTW, I love your sig Monkey!!

You of all people should know that there're more ideologies than liberalism and conservatism.

It hasn't changed my viewpoint one whit, but since that wasn't an option I voted for #1.

what the hell are you talking about? americans identify themselves as democrats or republicans ..am I incorrect? till a third party shares the limelight that's pretty much the extent of american politics

I would say the same thing as Razor

A great man once said that when you go to far to the right or to far to the left in politics, you end up going right round and meeting up the people coming round from the other side.

sorry guys I requested a mod change the poll adding 2 choices plus a third choice: "no", so far no reply ...maybe I'll do a new one with more choices sometime next week
