You never see headcrabs pray on anything other than humans, so how did they survive while they were still on Xen? in all of the half life 2 videos I still haven't seen them taking any different hosts.

Doesnt look like they need to take a host to live they just do it to make them stronger.

In the cemetery with Father Grigory they look like they are attached to dogs.

Could be, would explain their speed and movement on all-fours.

he said THEY LOOKED LIKE, he didnt say they were

EDIT-> damn you, you edited and now my post makes no sence

uuuhhh....They aren't dogs guys. Look at the screenshots released a week or two before E3 and you'll see the zombies are decayed corpses

Havn't we already gone through this? The headcrab iusn't gonna burrow 6 feet down, then break into a casket and attach itself to a body. Not to mention the fact that the body at that stage in decay has very few of anything left-particularly muscles(spelling?) and a nervous system. It looks like valve has added new species of headcrab, this could possibly be a different species than the one we are used to seeing in HL 1. So it might mutate it's host differently.

The only think that could disprove it's a dog is the fact it has the back 'ball' on its feet. However, it could just be a buildup of some other organic material, perhaps.

I wasn't saying it wasn't a dog, I was talking to the guy who said it was a decaying corpse. But I don't think I dog's head is the right shape for a headcrab. At least not a large dog.

I think its a normal zombie in a later stage of evoling if that makes any sense, just like... in... OpFo, you see the huge zombie that runs really fast, the next stage after that :)

Could be an Ape too :monkee: .think of a human zombie

Doubt it. Those things had more muscle mass and a huge mouth on their chest.

I'm not saying I don't think the Gonomes will return, but I don't think that the graveyard zombies are them...

I do, however, agree with the "corpsecrab" theory. Remember, City17 and its surrounds are in a state of what seems to be chaos... hardly time for people to bury their dead properly. My guess would be that they just bung 'em over the graveyard fence, and scarper...

It is probably is a dog, and i will tell you why.

The head crabs are ripped from alien, lets face it, and in alien 3 the alien gestates inside a dog. When it bursts out it has a more quadrupedal appearance, presumably because it absorbed some dog dna.

Anyway, the thing in the video looks just like that, the alien in alien 3.

Who says the headcrab would have to burrow into a grave? bodies can decay anywhere.

the alien in alien 3 looks like all aliens in the alien series :S Play the alien game and you'll see that for yourself too. And I would rather say that the headcrabs where inspired by bodysnatchers, take control over a body but then in a more aggressive way :p

I think the Alien3 alien does look different (Different-looking tail, more quadrupedal stance, plus I've seen comparison shots between the aliens from the three original movies - all look different)... but I still think that the corpsecrabs/deadcrabs are riding human corpses.

For one thing, the torso in the pic we've seen looks quite human...

Admittedly the life cycle of the head crab is closer to bodysnatchers but the aesthetic is closer to alien facehugger. This is seen in the way they :-

a) launch themselves at your face
b) attach themselves to a face

Hell, even the zombies look like they have had their chests ripped out a la alien. They are definitely alien-inspired, or at least a hybrid of aliens and bodysnatchers. Maybe gabe is a sci-fi buff, hell, he has to do something while he eats all that food.

Actually yeah, that is a human corpse. Who said it looked like a dog?

I bet that having a host is not a neccesity (is that a word?) for the headcrabs, it's more like *yummie a cookie!! *leaps*

Getting back on Topic: I read somewhere that the Headcrabs and anything else for that matter that come from Zen live off the crystals energy fields or something... But once they come to Earth, they go back to their primitive states and have to physically eat to live...kinda like Munro :)

I doubt that was canon; I read something similar in a speculation writeup on a fansite.

Heheh... watch out, Munro might be watchiiiinnnng...

the simple answer is that its a different type of headcrab. Its bigger and has longer limbs.

How is that so different to this? It's not a huge difference.

Do you want slapped?

Differences

Feet
Hands
Legs
Arms
Rib cage
Hip
Head

Not to mention that when a headcrab latches on it kills the host, these guys are merely a bit old and decayed.

According to the newest pc gamer thier called "howler monkeys", so maybe thier decayed gorillas or chimpanzees. would explain almost human appearance.

Dogs don't have opposable digits on their front feet (at least ones that can bend), nor can they bend their limbs the way the model is. It could be a monkey or ape (how many of those do you find rotting in a graveyard though...), but whatever it is, it is not a dog. :)

We are witty, aren't we? Do you want warned?

Feet - Apart from the ball on the foot, there's no discernable difference.

Hands - They don't even look bloody human in that picture, so how can you put down the fact that they might be animal?

Legs - Gonna need more clarification there.

Arms - Closest part to the human in the picture. The Headcrab could have forced the arms to disjoint in order to make them more effective for fighting.

Rib cage - Looks exactly the same.

Hip - Can hardly see it.

Head - Hmm, yeah, good point, since the head's covered in a headcrab.

You've seen how they move, humans just can't do that kind of movement at speed. It's either a monkey or some other large animal, like a dog.

I like my alien 3/dog theory. Remember the alien in alien 3 only looked a bit like a dog. That picture is definitely reminiscent of that monster, and it would explain why it doesnt look quite human in form despite coming from a human graveyard.

The alien, if you recall, also looked quite skeletal in appearance and had a bulbous head. That brings up the question of how such a creature came about. Although personally i dont think they thought about that. Instead they just watched alien 3 and they did some source art :).

Looks like a corpse. Would be faster because the primitive headcrab has to move less muscles/less weight

Headcrab makes zombie, zombies eat humans.

In any case, heacrabs will take over other aliens in HL2, so they can apparently eat whatever they want to.

Those are actually different head crabs attached to the dead humans.

They aren't dogs...

If you think about how the HL2 game looks it would make sense that alot of the places Gordon visits are mostly deserted, barren areas.
So its highly likely that the family of the dead wouldn't have much of an option but to give, at most, their relative a pretty crappy burial. If they're even lucky to get that. My guess is the cemetery will most likely have became a dumping ground for the deceased. Hense the perfect place for a headcrab to acquire a body.

Just to put the dog argument to rest, look at a dog, look at their legs and knees specifically. Their legs bend forward not backwards like the zombie screenshots, therefore it's not a dog.

Here I agree. And as to the people saying that the Headcrab is a ripp off of Aliens let me say this: The Headcrab and Facehugger are nothing alike, aside from the fact that they latch onto the face of their victim. Now in the Facehuggers case after it lays its eggs in its prey it falls off and dies. But in the Headcrabs case the Crab grows into something more, mutating with its prey. Not to mention the fact that the Facehuggers prey eventually dies.

:flame: Final point: the two are nothing alike aside from their face latching ability. :flame:
