Hero's of the past 100 years: Who is your hero?

John McCain is one of the few Republicans I'd vote for. I think he's a damn decent man, and (apart from his views on Intelligent Design) he seems to know what he's talking about. So, while I wouldn't consider him one of my heroes, he definitely gets my respect.

He's one of the few politicians I respect. I would consider myself liberal in general and McCain is technically a Republican yet he votes and behaves completely moderate. I respect him for his character and politics.

Well said.

Thanks.

Not only that, but he's a funny guy too. He's been on the Daily Show like 5 times, hosted SNL and appeared in Wedding Crashers (which he got flak for but made the joke, "I deal with boobs in Washington every day").

He also got in a bit of trouble for cracking a joke about Chelsea Clinton in '98 at a fund-raiser.

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father"

Burt Rutan impresses the hell out of me. He's the only private citizen in the world to build a craft that can take a human being to space. Aside from that though he's been instrumental in the aviation industry for the last thirty or so years. I greatly respect that man.

China isn't communist. It's state capitalism. Communism is freedom, orwell wrote about the tyranical rule of the Soviet Union and china ect. who were as communist as Zimbabwe is democratic.
Well, your age and place of birth is your apology. Communism is freaking and thievish ideology, not freedom. Lenin and Trotsky were murders of innocent people, not heroes...

You're not confusing Lenin and Trotsky with Stalin are you? Lenin and Trotsky did a decent job with Russia until Stalin comes and ****s everything up.

Of course, Stalin was worst, but I only commented Lenin and Trotsky because they are (very strange) heroes of Solaris...

No it's not, it may be misguided but it's by no means freakish and thievish.
Lenin and trotsky were nothing compared to Ronald Raegan, who was a true murderer of innocent people, and by any standards insane lunatic.

What? The Tsar familly? Who did they murder exactly? They otherthrough an opprezsive and tyranical regime that was causing alot of starvation. The workers were oppresed and abused. Lennin and Trotsky helped build and run the movement that liberated these people and improved their lives. Until stalin took control. Yes the movement failed, but it was a damn good try and an inspiration to some of us.

Ronald Reagan ended Cold War - he was peacemaker! How many wars, famines and gulags he made?

Lenin started building gulags, Stalin was only his successor. Tzars regime was bad but Lenins much worse...

He didn't end the cold war, he was planning to make it a blazing hot one as soon as he had finished the Star Wars project. It was Gorbatjov who came with the first proposals for peace. Then there is the iran contra affair. Under him the school of the americas trained dictators and rightwing rebels how to torture, he was a religiouse right loony. Under him the difference between the wealthy and pore increased more then under any other president. He freely ****ed up the enviorment cause he tought armageddon was near, and the earth was only a couple of thousands years old.
Wars, Gulags, and famine happend in kapitalist countries to, they have nothing to do with communism, Stalin was a dictator thats why he was so bad, rightwing dictators are just as bad.

Tank Man. Tom Baker, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen. Hunter S Thompson. Martin Luther King. Harold Wilson was so cool. The Chernobyl Divers. Audie Murphy and Otto Skorzeny - not heroes as such to me, but I respect them (christ, what balls). Rommel and Monty both. A load of people who people already already said. Ghandi, etc. Lenin was a ****. Trotsky seems like a cool guy.

Say what you want about Ronald, I don't think that's true. He too played a big part in cooling down the War - at least towards the end, because at the beginning he was all 'EVIL EMPIURE LOL!'. Admittedly it was mostly for financial reasons.

Karl Marx

Well, not exactly... since he wasn't actually acting into the twentieth century.
