Hillary clinton's a ****...

Hilary is an idiot. She would not win anyway. No need to worry about her annoying talk on violent video games because no one will make that shit happen.

i didnt like kerry, still would have voted for bush. van halen kind of sounds stupid tho but then again ive ran into many stupid liberals.

The Us of A, really is divided...Some game issue blows-up in a politician bashing

Anyway

I think violence in games should be adressed wisely.

For kids seeing this (interactive) violence can have serious consequences in their morale, values and principles. So we should do anything so that our little ones don't get in touch with it. So age-rating and follow up should do.

On the other hand...It feels good to splat someone virtually...especially if you had such a hard day at work or school...

For me it can be a stress-reliever...Calms me down...Otherwise I'd probably hit someone or something...

Just my 5 cents

Just 42% of the Americans vote? WTF? ...Apathy the greatest sin of our time.

unproven ..kids see far more violence on tv yet for some reason it doesnt seem to be as great a concern. Any 12 year old could go out right now and purchase Saw or Silence of the Lambs without a problem ..why one set of rules for a particular type of media and not the same for similiar media?

So we should do anything so that our little ones don't get in touch with it. So age-rating and follow up should do.

the game that is at the centre of the controversy is rated M for Mature meaning it's targeted to 17 and older ..this really isnt an issue of what's inappropriate for children (despite what the politicians say). Why arent they clamouring for a new rating system?

personally I'd prefer that no one under the age of say 18 could buy M rated games ..it would get these idiot politicians/religious nuts off our backs ..well at the very least they couldnt use children as their justification

Just 42% of the Americans vote? WTF? ...Apathy the greatest sin of our time.

what's most surprising is that it was the most important election in recent history ..I cant think of a more important one

it should be the parents responsibility not the governments. if a minor can be charged as an adult cant they be treated as an adult

CptStern I agree completelly...

Same rules for all media; altough games are interactive so it's you that commits the violence = more immersion...More impact ???

New +18 rating system? Preferably...better control on who buys what? Certainly

that's up to researchers to determine that ..but a case could be made that since there's more acts of violence on tv and that it is far more realistic than video games so one could argue that tv has more detrimental effects

if that happened Hl2.net's membership would be a quarter of what it is now. I can guarantee every single person here under the age of 18 has some reason why they're mature enough to buy M rated games

So what do we need then?... A psychological test to determine of someone is sane enough to play a game? Will be a little hard to implement doesn't it?
Maybe 18+ gamers can receive a code and when entered the 18+ bits become available. Could be done via steam...
But it's a crappy idea...
If there's violence or other adult content in a game than it should be functional otherwise there's no need and so it needs 18+ rating.
For some people it should be 25+ ;)

Like GTA would suck big time without the violence, sex and language...it would totally destroy the mood.

And you have a point on the more-realistic movie, television violence. Missed that aspect ;)

Of course not a easy subject. We are talking about individuals and not a group of people. Some will be able to place all the violence. Others will lose themselves in it and maybe lose their grip with what's real and what's not.

Just to bad that individials can have such an impact on a group (always the same, some bad apples and they trowh away the basket)

Stern, the problem is that's already the case here in the United States. You can not go into a store if you are under 17 and buy a M game, rent or watch a R movie, or buy a parental advisory CD (the latter being a little more lax if you are in the late teenage years) they have really cracked down on this a lot. If a kid gets a hold of these games the parents either allow it or they are shitty parents that don't care to spend 2 minutes a day to see what is happening with their child.

This is all political and these politicians are just trying to score political points. In the case of Hillary Clinton I have no idea what she is thinking and I would hope she was a little smarter than that, but this has been her position for a very long time and it doesn't look like it will change.

There wont be any change in the way games are sold, there isn't enough political will to do that. But for some reason these politicians insist on talking out of their ass about something they don't know anything about.

So what do we need then?...

a ban on sales of games rated M to minors ...sorry to those people under age ..you have to take the bullet so that the rest of us can continue to buy violent games

No Limit: not everywhere and it's not even law ..it's at the discretion of the retailer. Yes it's political scapegoating but unforetunately you americans lap this sort of stuff up ..all you need is one overly angry soccor mom/religious nut and the decision gets made for you. I dont even agree that a ban on sales to minors would work ..most purchases are made by the parents anyways ..however these politicans/religious groups wont stop till violence in video games is curtailed regardless of rating ..and what affects you affects the rest of us ...man, cant you guys off the radicals like they would in any other country? ...here's $50 go buy a box of bullets, give it to someone who's willing ;)

But for some reason these politicians insist on talking out of their ass about something they don't know anything about.

Just like we talk about politics ;)

Just kidding...
I hate how politics can interfere with our life...And most of the time they launch opinions or laws just for their own good or some pesky friends.

But we should be interessted in politics cause they are 'interessted' (read play) in us.

Actually I looked it up and you are right. I know for a fact that he in Albuquerque NM all the stores that sell these games do not sell to minors. From Wal Mart to Target to Game Stop to whatever.

It is sad how this country does react but I am telling you I strongly doubt any politican would ever actually try to take real action on banning these types of games, doing so would turn out the 18-24 voter demographic in such high numbers that there would be a political revolution in this country. All we have to do is get the lazy pot smoking youth in this country to actually give a shit. People like DietSoap need to grow up and actually take a few mintues out of their day to care. When that happens this country will not be the problem but with the help of other powerful nations be the solution. Or maybe the pot has rotten my brain and I'm delusional and dreaming, who knows? :|

But actually you are right. I am also guilty of this sometimes, the difference is that I don't have to power to influcance thousands of people when I am wrong. And when I am found wrong I do try to correct the record.

If you talk out of your ass about something you know nothing about as long as you are really trying to have a discussion so you do learn more about the issue I think that is very healthy. Its those close minded people that always assume they are right no matter how many times they are proven wrong that are part of the problem.

I agree completely ;)

Sometimes I wish I had their influence...
But maybe the power would make me drunk

MuHahahaha ;)

I dont think they'll ban video games outright ..they wouldnt be successful that's true ..but they have far more nefarious intentions: by pressuring state legislators to define violence in video games as obscene they could force publishers to self censor even before a game is made in oder to conform to a rating that's favourable to the bottom line: profits ..what publisher wants a potentially profit killing rating? ..it's the sort of thing that hollywood has had to deal with with it's own rating system ..how many directors are forced to cut scenes out of movies in order to get a more distribution-friendly release?

Probably true. That's what I like about Rockstar games, they don't seem to be buying into the pressure and are fighting the system knowing that in the end they will win. And other large game publishers, such as EA, should not be such pussies about it and follow Rockstar in the fight.

rockstar is the single biggest loser in this all ..I think they lost $40 million to hot coffee alone (along with retailers). They also crumbled under pressure, pulled their game, pulled out the offending parts and re-rated it ..all on the say of Jack Thompson (he started the ball rolling)

I mean ffs there was a senate hearing (and FTC investigation) where take two had to testify they did nothing wrong when they left unfinished code in the game

I think that once developers start adopting a online stragedy for game distrubtion will we finally see a change of attitude in games ..there'll be far more developers willing to fight to protect their IP's rather than a handful of publishers capitulating to the religious-nut-du jour

Jellyworld: sorry man you guys got to take the bullet to save gaming for the rest of us, just look at it this way: you wont be a minor forever

Holy shit Stern, I can't believe that. :O

I remember reading about this whole thing but didn't think they caved into the pressure and actually changed the rating. After all you had to write your own mod to unlock this. I need to get caught up, I haven't had much time lately to pay attention to what is happening in the gaming world. I had a little more faith in the system until I read this.

Hey, americans in the 18-24 year target (includes me), have you registed to vote yet? Elections are November 7th, you all better be there in those voting booths.

ya you really should keep up with only for the sake of seeing both parties act like big brother ...I mean the biggest proponents of censorship of video games comes from the democrats. I think this ties into the moralification of america ..I think it will be a fairly big issue come 2008 (not just video games but all media) ..it's an issue neither party can afford to ignore ..I mean they're tabling legislation to spearhead a campaign in getting media outlets to become responsible for their products

Like I said, if it comes down to games vs everything else I will vote everything else. But this is why we have the primaries, Joe Liberman found this out the hard way. This is no different than the assult on music back in the 90s, something most americans now don't support regulating. I'm not suprised Liberman, now a republican, and hillary clinton for whatever reasons would support this. But I had more faith in Dick Durbin than that.

I think it's a convienent bandwagon to jump on ..I'm sure most of these people dont really have interest in this sort of thing ..but it sure will look good for the soccor moms when the campaign trail stops in smalltown usa

When I open up newsday newspaper the first thing I see is something like "ZOMFG SOME MARINE'S(Including Shephard) & SOME IRAQIS WERE KILLED TODAY!!!!111111one When I see that I imediatly cut to the Sports section....what really matters, Im constantly looking the Wildcard on the NL east division.

All they say is the nagative, they never say anything good...NEVER. they never say something like "The 101st Marine division captured a vital Control point in a Insurgent infested area, Area secured says USMC Gunery Sergent R Lee. Ermley aka "Gunny".

The sports section? is this guy for real?
