This is from an IGN thread created by a mod and VIP member NeoMaxims. Just to tell you about him, he's a VIP because he works for Black Widow Games who did the They Hunger mods for HL. Heres what he posted:

Officially I can't tell you anything of course, but I can absolutely quote Gabe and allow you to draw your own, fairly obvious conclusion correct?

"In countries like England, where the retail product will be available either simultaneously or close to the US release (we don't control those dates, only the Steam dates),"

This was Gabe's official response to a question asking why Steam is going to function as a sales mechanism for HL2 versus retail.

There was more, but its irrelevant cause it was some linkage to other Gabe quotes. Hes using quotes to tell us something he cant officially say. I wonder what?

so sept 30th. will deffiantly be in the US retail stores, and deffiantly from STEAM, and the rest of the world gets it whenever, but gets steam sept 30th.

god its good to be in america

He's saying that it won't go out worldwide on the 30th. To be honest, I don't trust him. If Valve kept the dev of HL2 quiet for this long, it was by not talkingn to twats like this guy.

Where is that Old News is So Exciting pic .. I miss it :D

Am I wrong in saying that this is from the info thread?
Or am I mistaken?

This quote from NeoMaxims says it all:

" Vivendi has been firm about their date. They own retail distribution rights.

Valve controls Steam dates. They have been firm about their date.

Ponder.
"

He is obviously implying that the game will be released on Steam on the 30th for sure, and that the retail copies will be out soon afterwards.

yes, for the 234234 time, we get it

valve isnt lying, because technically it will get the game out the 30th, through steam

vivendi initially said it was "delayed" after valve told them the gold date was the 30th.

they retracted the statement after valve told them, "The gold date is the release date for steam, and the release date for retail is however long it takes for you to print it"

That way, valve will get anxious gamers to sign up for the steam subscription, amen.

Doesn't matter where you are, these days. All you need is a reasonably competent bank and a line of credit and you can get anything you want.

Anyone with a credit card can get it on the 30th.

Thankyou Digital... it's still hilarious

Nothing in that post says the 30th, so please don't just assume that it's guaranteeing a 9/30 release...

All it's saying is that the game will be released worldwide over steam on the day that Valve decides. This should be very close to when it's released in stores in the US and the rest of the world is a little less certain because Valve can't control the physical distribution methods elsewhere.

How is it old news? Hes just using quotes to convey insider information that he personally knows but cant officially say. In a way hes "confirming" some things.

actualy i think this is a good thread.

i was going to email valve and ask if the UK will get HL2 at the same time as the US.

seems so

"In countries like England, where the retail product will be available either simultaneously or close to the US release"

of course by England i presume some1 forgot to say Britian.

Britian =

England
Scoltand
Wales
N. Ireland.

so good thread

Just because you can download HL2 with Steam on the 30th, doesn't mean that you will be able to play it then. Im sure that Valve will let you download HL2, but wont unlock it until the game hits store shelves.

yeah i hate it when they say england, god dammit we put the blue in the damn flag! :)

What? If we do get an option to purchase and dowload in the coming days, you think they'll make us sit on it until the boxes hit the shelves? If the download is complete on the 30th (the release date stated by the developer), you'll play on the 30th. That's one of the supposed advatages to steam.

Valve isn't going to say ,"Well, even though everyone has downloaded the game and it's the 30th, we're going to make you wait three days until all the shops get it in."

Unless they're Ultra-Stupid that is.*

*They seem quite bright.

so good thread

It's the "or close to" bit that I'm not so keen about. Could mean anything from 1 minute to 30 days to whatever for Britain - er the UK.

Thank God for Steam! I hope...

Gabe also said the game will be out on the 30th. If you believe everything he says, why are you in a thread about the release date ;)

i wouldnt call "close" 30 days

more like with the 30th being tuesday we would get it on saturday.

i could maybe live with that.

maybe :flame:

quick question-can you buy hl2 on steam without the subscription? like just pay a flat fifty bucks?

Yes

Doesn't this only say that Valve controlls the date HL2 is released on Steam - not anything about WHEN that date is?

ok another question

can i use steam to download the game without a credit card?

ive got a bank account but im not old enough to get my own credit card.

or is there some way of giving my local gamestore the money and they take care of it. ie. you can buy 3 month subscriptions for planetside etc.

The fact that we havent been told any of this relevant info so close to release is slightly worrying :/
