Anybody on HL2.net listen to hip hop or rap.
I usually don't, but I must say, there are a few good ones
-Jon Young
-Snoop Dogg
-Tupac

I don't know any artist names let alone follow any, but there is some rap that I like (for the non-vocal elements mostly) and hip hop is usually pretty cool shit. The bass and the breaks, yo.

I'm going to combine a Yay for the good, and a Nay for the bad.

i.e. a very, very weak Maybe.

Love it. Or more specifically, the collective of 'abstract' artists that make up the anticon record label. I can't stand the lyrics centering around money, women and drugs (the latter can be used quite well, but not as of recent with the more modern hip-hop where it is instead glorified) and for that I fail to enjoy even the ''legends'' such as N.W.A and Tupac. Lyrics or otherwise, the abrasive and obnoxious style put me off somewhat as well.

Artists such as Themselves, Alias, Sage Francis or Why?, however, make some truely moving music that focuses more around life and whatnot, with a much more cutting edge then simply talking about who shot who and how bad this guy is. But regardless of the meaning they all make fantastic music in general and that's what I look for and enjoy.

Highly recommend The No Music by Themselves.

This.

I went with a big maybe because there is good rap out there. It's just hard to find.

Some more underground artists I enjoy:

atmosphere
Louis Logic
Jemini
aesop rock
del the funkee homosapien (better known as the guy who raps in the gorillas)
Sweatshop Union
kool keith (the guy in my avatar)
benefit

also some mainstream artists I like:
outkast
methodman/redman (I wish they could morph into one person)
some nas is ok
some jay z is ok
others
also sublime for no reason at all.

Yes I do. I do like stuff from eminem, jayz, outkast, Flipsyde (latino hip hop band). Mostly Mainstream stuff, don't really bother to search up on other artists..

Nas
Lupe Fiasco
Jay Z's 1st album.
Immortal Technique
AZ
Bone Thugs N harmony.

I've had a million people say this to me in the past. None of the "underground" stuff is any better, save for possibly the lyrics, but honestly I don't take rap lyrics very seriously most of the time simply because even the "good" ones I've seen could have been written by a sixth-grader.

Interesting...go on. Just out of curiosity Who did you listen to?

Spoken by a black metal fan.

At least we can tell what the rappers are saying. :p

AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

How the hell did I get in this thread!!!
Rap sucks
Or at least I hate it

When it comes to Hip Hop I just like what I hear, I used to be very aggressive towards mainstream but, that is all dumb and shit. Seeing underground isn't underground anymore; walk around Melrose in L.A. and hypebeasts are all around flaunting their sneaker fetish and hype clothing, who think it's cool to listen to underground only because it's started to become popular. They're like the emo/ indie fruitcakes in the rock scene but, into hip hop.

But, yes I do listen to hip hop.

yes, old school hip hop and gangsta rap mainly.. N.W.A, public enemy, tupac n biggs. i also enjoy alot of french hiphop, very distinct stuff. eminem for his brilliant rhymes. some kanye west as well!

I'm not fond of it myself, but I've mainly just heard the mainstream stuff. People say the real jewels can be found if you dig a little deeper, but I don't have either the time or the interest to do that.

There are some rap stuff I've liked though. Akon, for instance, seems to be pretty good.

I love 90's rap like big l, biggie, tupac and some stuff today is good.

I suppose some Eminem isn't that bad. It's certainly not my first choice, but there are worse things. Besides Kerrang! radio have played some Eminem, and i base quite a lot of my music like and dislike on what's played on Kerrang! radio and in Kerrang! magazine.

For the most part no, but there is some stuff (and I'm talking pretty rarely) that I don't mind the lyrics of, but 99.9% of the time I don't like rap in terms of the music.

When I was in high school I used to bump rap all the time, but now I'm just tired of it. I especially despise mainstream rappers, it's just that they repeat stuff over and over again like it actually makes some sense... well I guess it's like they say, rap is crap.:p

Indeed.

Soulja Boy is to hip hop in general what hitler was to short thin mustaches.

Makes it all look bad

Hip Hop = DJ with an MC (MC respects the DJ, and if the DJ doesn't want that MC to sing, then the MC won't sing. Atleast, in proper hip-hop respect)
Rap = MC with a track played behind them.

It really bothers me to hear people say that, but honestly, Rap was created because record companies didn't want to pay for a DJ, and they figured they could make more money with just an MC. The MC also had the spotlight in Rap, instead of the usual traditonal hip-hop where the DJ has the spotlight.

And on Saul Williams, don't quote me on this, but I'd personally believe he is Rap, as the vocals take the spotlight. Saul is awesome though, I love his music with a passion.

Sorry for double post, but I can't edit my post.
This is on Saul Williams' genre (The guy who mixed his first album wrote this.)
saul williams...wow. he is an intense cat but also very cool. he's really an amazing poet and very socially aware. he know's music and he's a huge hip hop fan. we got along really well and had a lot of fun working on that album. it literally took me about a week after we finished to completely absorb the things he was saying. as i was working on it, i was conscious of his lyrics but the depth of them didn't hit me until after. and musically it was a big fusion of styles. to me, it was very original and possibly ahead of it's time. it's definitely not an album that's easy to listen to so some people will just not get it. he's rapping but he can be so abstract that most people can't equate this as being hip hop. i'm hoping we'll get together soon for another album.

It's his own genre. He's there in his own spot. It's like, Poetic Hip-Hop/Rock/Funk? God knows.

No offense, but I think alot of funk rock songs also involve alot of "talking with a tune" kind of a jive, but, funk rock lyrics are also more explosive and powerful, and generally more lyrically stronger.

Also, I like it when hip-hop is mixed with other genre's. Such as mixing Rap and Industrial Rock (NIN and Saul), mixing Rap with NU-Rock (POD, LP, Korn(some stuff)), mixing Rap with Latino Music (Flipsyde). Mixing Rap with Techno/Trance (Trip Hop stuff, The Gorillaz etc.) Funk Rock/RapCore is great too (RATM, Old Incubus). That's what Rap should be like, mixed with other stuff not just alone. Agree?

this is what good rap sounds like, excellent flow and rythm takes some skill to rap like this:

lyrics to follow along if you wish:

[Intro: DJ Kay Slay]
It's a time for martyrs now, as the rap game that's in a crisis
Record sales continue to decline, record labels are mergin
And cats got confused on what's real hip hop

[Chorus: Busta Rhymes]
We got the real live spitters in the game of rap!
All you dudes say you nice, but you n****s is wack!
Where my lyricists at? ! Where my lyricists at? !
Where the f*** you n****s at? ! Where the lyricists at? !

[Verse 1: Big Lou]
I could carry the weight of Pun, ressurect Big L's lungs
And jack every single beat that Jam-Master Jay spun
I'm the lyrical son of Rakim, the jab of Bernard Hopkins
The voice of B.I.G. and Pac overlooked by Johnnie Coch-aran
The KRS-One doctrine, the monster in these n****s
That be posterin I'm robbin 'em in a whip they girlfriend drivin 'em
I'm butter without the margarine, the crack without the sizzle
The rain without the drizzle, the hammer without the chizle
The baller without the dribble, the scribble Scrabble, the Writer's Block
I bibble babble have the spit and flip the rip the chain that shackles
Had to fight and grapple and tackle the Rotten Apple
I traveled from Camden and met the Drama King at the tabernacle
Gave me the juice like a Snapple, ran with it like the Olympics
Encrypted my signature on templets for the cake like Krimpets
Move Atlantis, I Am Legend, knock a Troy to Armageddon
Lyrical prophet the hip hop heavens, raised by Latin Florida Evans

[Chorus: Busta Rhymes]
We got the real live spitters in the game of rap!
All you dudes say you nice, but you n****s is wack!
Where my lyricists at? ! Where my lyricists at? !
Where the f*** you n****s at? ! Where the lyricists at? !

[Verse 2: Papoose]
No lyrical content just typical nonsense
My mental too complexed to listen to garbage
Every lyric I palm breast he grippin a large tek
And killin you God bless that s*** is too far fetched
Givin you are a threat then live it don't talk mess
N****s in projects ain't feelin you more or less
This hittin your heart yes you miserable or stressed
Get rid of you y'all sets, finish your squad next
Pitiful process with spirits that's part flesh
We rip through your small chest with critical objects
N**** you waan test the general confess
I'll injure you frauds best in criminal contest
No killa you harmless my birth involves death
Umbilical cords wrecked my little unborn neck
Before I get all dressed in greens and oppress
And walk through the yards vexed I rather graveyard rest

[Chorus: Busta Rhymes]
We got the real live spitters in the game of rap!
All you dudes say you nice, but you n****s is wack!
Where my lyricists at? ! Where my lyricists at? !
Where the f*** you n****s at? ! Where the lyricists at? ! RAH!

[Verse 3: Papoose]
Totalos tiempo [? ]
Contiene mal aliento I'll kill you tomorrow
Playin with Papoose like I ain; t the rap truth
I'll kill 'em in that booth you doubt it go ask booth
Slay gave me the dice, I hit 'em with the deuce
They started laughin but man this the deuce that killed Bruce

[Verse 4: Big Lou]
The most original, lyrical criminal, leave you in critical
Torture and ridicule these pitiful rappers, I'm cynical
With the flow that's enormous, my swagger and stage performance
The corners I sold to foreigners, they zoners tryin to extort us
The coca I dropped in waters, supporters I'm crossin borders
Papa blessin me with orders, I never move like the tortoise
I rather move like the Testarossa, eat like I'm in Ponderosa
2008 Keyser Sosa, I'm s***tin on all these chokers

[Chorus: Busta Rhymes]
We got the real live spitters in the game of rap!
All you dudes say you nice, but you n****s is wack!
Where my lyricists at? ! Where my lyricists at? !
Where the f*** you n****s at? ! Where the lyricists at? !
