Left Behind - Black America: A Neglected Priority in the Global AIDS" is intended to raise awareness and remind the public that the "AIDS epidemic is not over in America, especially not in Black America,"

The Black AIDS Institute says it's not criticizing the federal government for helping poorer countries cope with the AIDS epidemic. Rather, it's saying the "AIDS epidemic [in the U.S.] is not getting the kind attention that it merits." Video

about half of the just over 1 million Americans living with HIV or AIDS are black."

According to this report, if black Americans made up their own country, it would rank above Ethiopia (420,000 to 1,300,000) and below Ivory Coast (750,000) in HIV population.

Black people represent about one in eight Americans

Too bad many people view people with aids as monsters that shouldn't be around their kids or themselves.

They're people who deserve help from a terrible disease.

You've never seen people overreact to the possibility of working with an HIV positive coworker?

sorry, but id rather work with people who dont have it

It's a bit harder to transmit HIV than one might imagine, though freak incidents can occur. It really takes extended open blood to blood contact or the obvious sexual transmission. Even if someone with AIDS stepped on a nail on the floor and bloodied it up, only for you to step on the very same nail -- the chances of you then of contracting HIV is slim to none. The virus dies fairly quickly when exposed to open air (though blood can serve to cultivate the virus temporarily). This is not to say you shouldn't take the necessary precautions with sterilization and avoiding open, infected blood; but it's never bad to do something in the way of dispelling the rampant paranoia surrounding the virus.

This really is fascinating and horrific information, it shows a lot about the blatant and increasingly evident poverty line in the United States. The situation is extremely dire in a lot of these poor black neighborhoods. Education, and in this case; sexual education, is only getting worse. No Child Left Behind is one example of something that's be detrimental, if anything, to a cause like this. Poor standardized test scores? Say goodbye to your public school - hello funding private entities (which the kids' families can't afford anyways).

The U.S. is the most blatantly segregated and class divided country in the first world, I wish more people knew statistics like those shown in the OP.

No, but poverty is hardly racially equal. That's what it really comes down to, unfortunately.

:Me: - I dream of a world where one day all children will have equal chances of being infected with HIV, regardless of their ethnicity!

I've also heard of a population in Africa who's immune system was IMMUNE to the HIV they had. "Oh, well do research!" never heard about it again.

Don't they know? MONEY is the cure for AIDS!

how about using a Condom-it's not that hard to do -___-

It is when you can't afford realistically usable ones.

Are you saying black people are too poor to buy a pack of codoms?

rubbish.

I think he's saying that the condoms are too small.

anyway, you don't think money is a factor?

When you only have $20 or $30 extra a week, after paying the rest of your bills, gas, food, car, etc, house, etc, you are doing good, but condoms can cost quite a bit. Especially if you have sex multiple times per day over a period of time.

I think the main factor is just that the male (probably) didn't want to use one because it doesn't feel that significant, and took a risk and lost.

When I was in middle school, they told us that condoms cannot protect you from HIV, but I guess that isn't true anymore or what? I mean, this was a long time ago. I'm sure condoms are superior now than they were 20 years ago.

I think the latest info is that condoms help reduce the risk, but it's not guaranteed to protect you.

Condoms aren't guaranteed to protect you from pregnancy, either. Unfortunately there's something called human error. The theory of a condom is perfect and unbeatable. Until humans start to use them.

OK, because when I was in school, they told us condoms offer little to no protection from HIV because the virus was small enough to fit through microscopic structure of the condom.

I know this is still true for Sheepskin condoms, but I don't know if it's true with latex or not. Like I said, 20 years can make a big difference to where we could improve the latex through research

Condoms used to be made of natural skin (including lambskin) or of rubber. That's why they are called "rubbers." Most condoms today are latex or polyurethane.

Lambskin condoms can prevent pregnancy. However, they have tiny holes (pores) that are large enough for HIV to get through. Lambskin condoms do not prevent the spread of HIV.

Latex is the most common material for condoms. Viruses can not get through it. Latex is inexpensive and available in many styles. It has two drawbacks: oils make it fall apart, and some people are allergic to it.

Polyurethane is an option for people who are allergic to latex. One brand of female condom and one brand of male condom are made of polyurethane.

Latex is the most common material for condoms. Viruses can not get through it.

Tbh, I wasn't aware that lambskin condoms existed. Thus, I just assumed condom means safe.

I guess 20 years can make a whole load of difference.

It's cool, I admit, I've never seeked out the information, even though over the years I was given clues that what I learned in school is not true anymore

DAMNIT SEEKED IS A WORD. I WANT IT TO BE A WORD

I'm tired and I need my pills. lol

he said load

The short answer to this would be no. I wouldn't trust Latex enough to try my luck either. Make that bitch go to the clinic to get tested.

It should be perfectly fine. If she's hot enough, you probably wouldn't care (at the time).

The hotter the chick, the more likely she has an STD of some sort. Just for that reason.

Viruses scare the shit out of me. No cure for any of them.
Silver. All you need is a rod of pure silver, a square battery, some wire, and a cup filled with water.
The battery oxidizes the silver into the water which then creates a solution that can kill any virus. Don't know it it would work for HIV though.

EDIT - why did you ninja edit that? I guess I'm going to have to quote everyone.

LOL

Or a wooden stake through the heart.
