so.... you just wrap some tape around those clips, and use it just like that, right?? :E :p

pfft! Ammo bag!? I don't need no stinking ammo bag!

nice model btw. I still hate that gun, but it does look better textured.

I would guess it quite hard to see with such a config in CS...:)

I like your model. But I hate the gun. It looks like shit IMO.

Its just a matter about model replacements.
which isn't that hard.
I hate the XM8, its more ugly than the worst looking mum in the world.
but your model is quite accurate, but it looks pretty high poly.

it's a very nice model, but what is the triangle count ..? and post a wireframe ?

can we have a wireframe please, and is that polycount a polycount or tri count ?

Funny, it doesn't look like it's textured to me, looks like he just took the model apart and gave each piece the right color. (If it is a texture, it would need actual detail.)

(And I still don't get how anyone could find this gun ugly. Except for most AKs and some "simple" weapons, I can't think of any guns that I find ugly.)

(Edit: Polygon count == triangle count, since all 3d games render in triangles, and the 3d programs that I've seen report polygon counts as triangle counts, it is completely pointless to refer to polygon count as actual multi-sided polygons instead of triangles.)

polycount is not a triangle count. a polycount of 500 could be anything between 500 and 1000+. i know that in Max, if your model is Editable Poly, the polycount is actually a polycount, whereas if you convert it to Editable Mesh, it is a triangle/face count. yes, all games render in triangles, but when looking at a model in the modelling prgram, a polygon can have any number of sides.

PS. the xm8 looks like something out of a cheesy space war film :smoking:

i dont like the gun but its an excellent model.

City13 wants you!

Looks very good. I haven't studied it, but I think it looks good when I look at it now. Nice config with the mag :)

polycount is not a triangle count.
Yes, it is.

The fact that polygons can have any amount of sides, and that 3dsmax counts actual polygons if you put it into a certain mode doesn't matter. The only thing that does matter is that games render in triangles, not multi-sided polygons, so reporting the polygon count of a weapon made or simply intended for a game (Rather it's just for learning or will actually go in the game.) as multi-sided polygons instead of triangles (Which are still polygons.) is completely pointless.

polycount isnt a triangle count, but we refer to it as the tri count because its just habitual and its more of a slang word, especialy in 3d game forums. If the modeler has no clue what poly or tri counts are then that's his fault.

So, except for when it's in editable poly mode, 3dsmax referring to polygon count as the number of triangles is "just habitual"?

Thks everyone for the kind comments.... my GFX is down for a week, waiting for my new one to arrive......

Well personally i always model in Editable poly but i always convert back to editable mesh to get the correct count / when i export into games .

Personally i never heard of the triangle count until i started visiting these forums i always refered to the poly count in editable mesh

In 3DSM, the polygon count refers to numbers of 3 sides polygon or Triangle. When u select one side of a box(4 sided), and when u delete it away the polygon counter goes down by 2 not by 1. I also never heard of triangle counts before, even in CG forums like Turbosquid.com

And I will agree with Sir Phoenixx, polygon count is equal to tri counts.

Look very nice. I may be the only person here that likes the actual gun, and the model :) And those of you who hate it, better start getting used to it. It will be replacing the M4/M16 in about 10 years.

Well saying its equal is wrong because its not equal. If you take a box and turn it into editable poly and then check count it will say 6. If you turn the same box into editable mesh it will be 12 (double the ammount)

So its basicly not equal, when modeling a high poly models they will ask for a polycount (editable poly). If you model something for a game it will be a poly tri count (editable mesh).

I did this mistake modeling my M4 and the first model was actually 12000 triangles when in editable poly it was 6000. After 2 days of removing and optimizing I managed to shave off about 8000 triangles (something that is a pain in the ass!)

I like it. The XM8 is an awesome gun. What are you planning on using this for? I'd like to use it for an M4 skin in CS:S or something.

I like the looks of the gun. it is the future rifle for the U.S. More important than looks though, is its fantastic functionality and reliability. I'de love to use a model for it in cs:s or hl2.

Oh, and the standard XM8 magazines are capable of interlocking to each other without using any other material such as tape.

here are some cool vids about the gun.

The model looks really good, projectile. It's nice to see some models with real smoothing. Are you going to be skinning this, or are you getting someone else to?

The only problem I can see are that there are some smoothing errors on the receiver. This could be fixed by chamfering some of the edges, which would add some polygons, but ultimately make the smoothing much better. Oh yeah, and there might be too many magazines.
