Everyone reading this forum knows that Half-Life 1 is being released on the Source (Half-Life 2) engine, but only rag doll physics and a few smaller content changes are being made.

Several threads have arisen, with suggestions of how to go about recreating the original like it should have been.

I for one would love to start a modification team that, upon HL1:Source's release start to go about fully overhauling the original single player.

I have past modification experience and work with design documents for modifications and the like. Therefore I know well enough that this project must be taken about very delicately. Half-Life succeeded for what it was, changing that drastically would remove the very elements that made it what it is.

I may throw together a design document, but it would take a lot of time and effort because this is no mere task.

Is anyone interested in helping out? Design, Web Hosting, Programming, Modelling, Skinning, Mapping etc etc?

Thats a very cool idea. I would love to help but i have no moding exp.

I'm fairly sure that there are several mod teams that have already started preliminary stuff for a complete HL1 overhaul, but unfortunately I dont have any links or anything.

I would suggest combining forces with those who are already planning this. I think I read that a couple teams have already contacted Valve about it, so you might e-mail Valve and ask them perhaps.

Or maybe a search on moddb might turn up the teams thinking about it.

I'm am really looking forward to someone doing this though. It would be great to replay hl1 with some new graphics.

The biggest problem with HL is that it wasn't designed for Source. Basically, all you can do is pump up the graphics, and is it really that fun to create a mod like that, that basically is just improved graphics?

Just had a look on moddb and can't find anything.

Also that modification looks pretty crap, looks like the beauty of HL is going to be decapitated..

It will still be a lot of fun to play with the enhanced physics and ragdoll effects. I can't think of any single player game that has enjoyed the same longevity and positive fan response after this long besides half life (except maybe the original doom series.)

This would be sweet, i just had a flashback to the elevator falling scene from the start imagining how that would look with ragdolls and physics, i mean the whole elevator could be a physics object that would bounce off the walls throwing the scientists out instead of it being buried under the ground.

I am replaying through HL1 at the moment (its taken a while on hard) and I have to say, it still rocks. Lotsa susepenful moments and crazy battles.

Those people making HLE are working in HL 1's engine, not in HLS

It looks like the other people are upgrading HL1 using the HL1 engine...

jheaddon - do you want me to do the site?

You never know... things like that may have already been physically enabled in HL:S.. a Valve employee did comment that they had physically enabled certain things here and there, such as the hanging boxes early in the game. I'm sure there are other things...

Could be very interesting!

I'm going to talk to some people i often chat with at valve and will see what they reckon, what other people have suggested.

If all is good then i'll start planning :)

I'm all for a total modification of Half-Life, as long as they don't make it half-assed, and with an independent modification team seeking no profit this is very possible.

agreed, it would need alot of dedication to get it done properly. Why i am asking for those would like to help first, get a nice design document and plan sorted out, for the best of the project.

mortiz : Doubt VALVe would consider buying the finished product, i mean yeah it would be worth a fair bit if done well and it kept true to the original, modern day version of an immense game. But i doubt they would want to buy it up..

Anybody else want to help out / give their views on what they think could be done?

Replace textures. Give them bumpmaps, enviroment mapping, and specular. When needed of course. Next the maps need to be upgraded. Groups of maps could be put together. Parts of the maps would need to be modeled. Characters would be replaced. My question is would you want to use any content form HL2. Such as the using the grenade llauncher from the MP7, on the MP5. I think it would be best to avoid HL2 content but some things almost seam to fit.

I said about twice already that I'd make a site :p :afro:

So, can I help by making a site?

knock yourself out :)

emailed a friend at valve so will see what they reckon.

nice ideas NetWarrior, keep them coming :) even the obvious ones, incase i leave someout

I would be happy enough with the models, water, and key textures being updated.

I think it'd be great, if you guys might join forces, so to speak. No use in two teams fighting over the same thing, (actually there is, but not in this case). But, that's just my 'two cents.'

The design document is underway, will pdf it and host it in the next couple of days.

Anybody else have things to add? Suggestions and such? Or anyone else want to help out? Website is under development so will advertise fully once it is up and running.

I'm sure you have everything covered. It's a fairly straightforward project. Improving graphics mostly.

James was working on a design but having trouble with the banner :p

You got much experience?

I was quite good at art, I would love to make any changes to the art work. :)

Good to hear GWalker :)

You've been quite vague as to what type of art though, textural, model, map, sound :)

Would you mind Brodie?

You ever done freely made maps or models or anything? Not assigned to a mod team?

textural, I think.

What can I start with?

I saw from that site something called Azure Sheep

What is it?
Is it any good?

Azure sheep was a mod where you play as barney that came out before blue shift came to pc. It was good as far as I remember.
