HL:Source Overhaul modification

Well, I loved the feel of the original half-life, so if there's still room for extra design work then I'd love to help.

I can help with design, website, and organization, as well as do varying degrees of minor textures, sounds, maybe some ambient music, and mapping (very limited in that department).

glad to hear it :D
If you go with the style I recommended for Xen.. I "might" be interested in knocking up some stuff for that. While I take a break from SW etc..

You bet Dark Elf :) will put you in charge of design for that part :p when you get the time

Audio - love to have your feedback on some stuff, am slowly getting the design document together (damn uni, who'd have thought they'd set so much f'ing work! :p), will send your way when its done though.

And with your other skills, can always try your hand out at some stuff later on :)

Well you'd have guys converting what I do into objects and maps. Converting the style into proper locations and adding gameplay etc. I wouldn't be doing that bit, just getting the style down.

Probably best if I _don't_ know about the rest of your mod.. When you make strange designs or civilisations its always best to avoid seeing what the other designers are doing for their parts as much as possible, to avoid any influences from them creeping in, that way it remains as "alien" as possible.

Sounds good :) can't wait!

Sure you'll end up seeing, will send you it anyway :p

Hey jheaddon hows the mod going :) , to try and get a better understanding of the whole Half-Life expirience i recomend that you read this site :) It combines the stories of all of the different versions (e.g. Blue Shift, Opposing Force...).

I don't no how true everything on the site is but its very interesting and i learned quite a bit myself.

I no i said it before but i would definatley be willing to help out in any way i can on this mod. Do you no how the Black Mesa Research Facility is going to look yet? I have updated a few textures so far but if you are going to modernise the whole Facility it probably wouldnt be woth it. If you would like i could have a go at trying to modernise the textures.

Anyway, continue to post every single idea you have about this mod so that everyone can express their opinions on the direction the game is taking. Im sure there are a lot of people who are interested :)

If you want to email me with what you've got so far, I'll tell you what I think and propose about it.

Ok guys i'll post some stuff up tonight for viewing, gotta head off to uni now so no time sorry :(

Couple of Xen things from this morning

Glad you like em.. I'll do more when I get around to it, depends how im feeling later.

jesus, Dark Elf, those are amazing.

I want to be in on this badly. I can help a lot with design and organization, team stuff like that, plus I can do some texture work, some mapping (basic stuff anyway) and just generally contribute.

Very nice stuff as always mate :)

Hungover by the way?
Cheers

Hungover? me? no, rarely drink these days, don't like Hangovers that come after hehe.

I have experience in photoshop and will happily help with making any textures. This is deffinitley a big job and needs as much help as possible.

Has anything been said about getting new voice acting?

EDIT
Are you planning to use any of the models from hl2, eg. the new head crabs?

I'll have a nice thorough look over the HL2 models, but i highly doubt they will be used, we will see though :)

Voice actors.. i feel we will need some in the future, but till then i think just using some crap audio to get the game on its way will suffice (i.e. my sexy voice). Then when everything is well on its way will draft in some voice actors.

Textures will be used a lot less, TDE's suggestion to model out each texture will be the most likely technique.

I realise that a lot of people with texturing / photoshop skills who want to help out will be put off by this, but the idea of the mod is also to develop everyone's skills to atleast a base level in a few of the areas (modelling, mapping, et cetera). So its a great chance to learn some new skills and help contribute in more than your specialist area of the mod.

What about using the HL2 G man model. I think you should chose a name soon before HL:Source Overhaul sets in. Unless that is what you want.

If you want good modelers, I recomend posting over at www.cgtalk.com
Im sure that some of the guys there (although highly professional) might be interested in improving the greatest game of all time...

Oh, and for xen, can you say "3d SkyBox"?

man that will be seksay

jheaddon, do you have an MSN or AIM screenname that I can get in touch with you on? I have basic skills in most areas and developed skills in design and management, so I'd like to talk to you so I can get on board.

all right I'll drop you an email today or tomorrow

Thats the kind of thing I had in mind.. can you imagine all that detail in a 3Dskybox around the map.. definately get a feeling of vastness and strange border worlds.

Hey Fenric, nice work :) A very dark version of Half-Life ;)
It's a goth's playground :D:D:D

Besides, I wanna see the Garg scare me silly in an envrionment like that ;);)

Yeah, the enemies need to be much more badass and terrifying than they were in the original. A Source-rendered Grunt would dick all over any Ant Lion.

Here's a concept of a Source Houndeye.

I've made it less dog-like than the HL1 original and more reptilian. The spines and feet are indications of this. Also the build of the animal is alot more chunkier, making it seem stronger and meaner. What would be awesome in Source is the use of specular mapping on the eyes and the increased polygon count, meaning that they creatures could feature hundred's of glassy, round eyes staring at you. That would be mega.

Maybe I missed this in a later reply - but w.r.t the hazard course, being chosen at the reception. If U accept to do hazard course, you will re-emerge at the surface with your HEV suit on. Seems silly to have it taken off you, only to be told to go and put it on again at some other point. Its a silly tiny niggle I got when reading an otherwise sound plan.

If you mean making the hazard course a part of the main game (as in just going off another direction, maybe from the start of the train ride) then I agree, would be much cooler like that.

but say you choose not to do the hazard course then you have to instead, go to the HEV docking place.
If you do the hazard course, then you will have already collected a HEV (unless its a training model) and be running around the reception area decked out in heavy duty safety equipment, possibly to be told by barnys to go and get another one - or is source smart enough to sort this out?

The hazard course wasn't done on the surface? It was done in the BM compound i believe.

Only reasonable way to do it though is to have the HEV suit taken away from the player when they leave the course though..

nice Garg!! I only wish I could do more than say good job and such..

so I give my moral support,as I have no knowledge/skills of mapping, art of any kind...

I don't think the hazard course should be a part of the game unless you want it to be; make it bypassable.
