HL2: Best urban combat ever?

I've played all of the FPS out there -- from all of the Rainbow 6 games through four Delta Forces, all of the MOHs, Call of Duty, Far Cry, all the way up through Men of Valor -- and I think that HL2 has some of the best urban combat ever ... helps that it's almost entirely set in a city, I guess.

There's no rush quite like hunkering down behind the fender of a car being pelted with fire, then popping up and squeezing off a few shots. The vast amount of rubble and boxes and barrels make ducking and dodging, in and out of buildings, through apartment buildings, tons o' funs. Combines sniping from windows, advancing on you using bounding overwatch ... awesome.

I did miss the ability to go prone as well as the curious absence of a current staple of FPS games: the lean controls, to peek around corners, doorsways, cars, etc.

I agree with you. Also, you feel for your pal resistance members. It all feels so right! Like when you come to the small group of resistance before the barricades and then lead a push against them. So great!

OR hell, even hiding out in an abandoned coffee shop from a Strider. To have it walk by, then unleash hell on it.

One thing that makes combat in this game so good and something most people overlook: the particle engine.

I've never seen such nice particle effects as in HL2, bullet impacts look like they should, same for explosions. Valve did it right this time (I hated HL1 effects) very right indeed.

The squad battles through the streets of City 17 are amazing. The sound effects are worth a special mention in that you can actually hear bullets whizzing past your head. I was playing last night and found myself actually ducking in an attempt to keep my head down!

The thing is, I remember hiding behind the door in that coffee shop while the Strider was shootin at me (Obviously the door is made of titaniu!!) Then it passes and helloooo me running threw! I was out of all ammo that is used against it. It was Hard mode, so yeah, I hadda go. lol

Well, we'll have to learn to live with titanium doors and unclimbable and unbreakable fences for at least a few more years. But soon. Maybe in time for HL3?

*spoilers*
I loved the strider battles, that sound what the striders make before releasing their main gun is sooo scary. Some parts of Anticitizen One were dreadfully linear, but however, the aparments and streets and evertything look more real than ever before. Call of Duty doesnt stand a chance against these exploding walls, amazing sound effects and realistic architechture. Best urban battles yet.

LOL ... yeah, I think we all hid in the coffee shop and cowered a little bit hoping that a strider wouldn't lower its head and peek in there. ...
