hey i was wondering, which card is best for HL2 that can run both HL2 AND doom3 smoothly? im planning on buying a new one soon but i was gunna wiat for PCI-E

whatever card that has *preferd graqhics for half lfie 2*

if your truly serious about running hl2 without any hitches what so ever everything maxed out (aa, resolution, lighting quality, etc..), i'm saying that the x800xt is a practical no brainer, just make sure you can afford it, and that the rest of your rig can handle it.

personally i wouldnt buy a x800 xt unless you KNOW you can afford a athlon 64 fx-51 or so or your card will seriously be held back by your cpu(ive heard that even a fx 51 will hold back the x800 xt a little bit...)

There are already:

similar threads on this subject. Haha, jk :E I just had to do that.

Right now it seems ATi is the preferred video card for HL2 and nVidia is the card for D3...

Either the X800 Pro, X800 XT PE, 6800 GT, or the 6800 Ultra will run Doom 3 and Half-Life 2 with high settings. If you are talking semantics about frame rates, Nvidia cards run Doom 3 better while ATI cards will run Half-Life 2 better. It really is your choice. I personally would recommend the 6800 GT as a great card with great performance.

I don't think your correct in saying that.
Gabes big blow out against NVIDA occured nearly a year ago, before the advent of the 6800 class of card. I would say that NVIDA is back on top of the Graphics fight for the moment if the benchmarking for Doom3 was anything to go by...
The whole thing is like a see-saw

Maybe Doom3 was optimized for a nVidia codepath, I wouldn't be suprised if it's a "The way it's meant to be played!" game.

Incidentally, HL2 has been tailor made for the Radeon family.

geez why has it gotta be like that, just make the games evenly compatible for both you damn id and VALVe idiots. lol :p

i agree with Mad Dog, why would a company that sponsors a game not ensure that its product go best with the game they are sponsoring, its plain stupidity if they didnt, theres no questioning whether nVidia runs better with DOOM3 than ATi does, because it does. (full stop) :)

i dont know.. its so damn confusing. i was gunna go with the 6800 Ultra because according to the official id doom3 benchies, the 6800ultra 256mb outperforms the x800xt-pe on PCI-E in all areas, but then again, i dont think id like to be playing doom3 that much, unless ive got enough money to be buying a new pair of underpants each month. lol

Get a geforce 6800 GT for $100 less then the x800 and the same performance with ps 3.0 support

ATI dropped the ball majorly with the x800, it's doom3 benchmarks were like 10-20 fps lower then the 6800 GT (low end geforce6) and it only won like 12 mixed benches while the geforce 6 won like 22-24 and the x800 doesn;t even support ps 3.0

Don't buy in to the marketing hype from ATI and VALVE, look at the facts

can a 9800 pro render all the lighting effects and stuff used in half life 2?

hl2's engine isnt as "chunky" as the doom3 engine, valve made it so it can run on a moderately gutless computer

a 9800 pro isnt gutless

can it run all of doom 3's effects?

Ok, sure......Thats why the X800XT PE beats the 6800U in most benchmarks....

You'll need a 512mb card to run Doom 3 at max settings. So if you've got the money, and want max settings, I suggest you wait.

Check out the benchmarks from HardOCP, your computer wont be able to run Doom3 on high will all High settings at a high framerate, the 9800XT barely can. If you really want to rip through those games, I would upgrade to a X800 XT if you have the money, just because I feel like more games will be made on the Source engine rather than the Doom 3 engine, and the XT still runs Doom3 extremely well.

Your 9800 Pro will play it, but not on all high settings with a decent framerate.

yes it will...only without AA and AF... but who need s that crap at 1024.768? (if 30+fps isnt enought to play a game, i must be a really humble guy)

uhh buddy just take a look at the official DOOM3 BETA benchies for yourself..
the X800XT PE is outperformed by both 6800ULTRA and GT

as for the 9800 being gutless.. it will be able to run doom3 good but not as well as other cards. eg. 6800ultra

First, D3 was one game. Don't put your eggs in one basket. It was an OpenGL game at that. Don't assume any performance for other games except those that run on that engine. The X800XT PE does win the majority in benchmarks. The 6800 wins a lot as well but not as many nor as consitant. It depends what games the review shows and that will give you a different view.

I'm surpised most people aren't noticing this but in HardOCP's review, the PCI-Express/Intel Prescott sysem was the platform where the GT was going upwards of 10 FPS and the Ultra 20 FPS above the X800 card.
The 2nd platform was a P4 3.2GHz / AGP machine and the biggest difference was
5 FPS for the GT and 10 FPS for the Ultra with the average difference being 2FPS (GT) and 6FPS (Ultra) from the XT.
The 6800 fell 4-8 FPS with AGP compared to PCI-Express while the XT only dropped 2 FPS.
Sorta wish we had results on a A64 beast.

The 6800 benifits from Ultrashadow2 in D3. Also Nvidia did design the card in a way that is more appealing to a game like D3.
HL2 will have many shader and texture effects using SM2.0 and won't be light dependant so I can easily see the X800 series besting the 6800 there. Of course the differences between Nvidia and ATI hardware from last years benchmarks that Gabe posted can't be assume for this generation of cards. They can still be held true for the 5900/9800 series though.
From how ATI's cards excel we can get an idea that they will do very well and that Nvidia does not show that true weakness with shaders like their 5900 card but we can't say how they will perform either.

You will be guaranteed to get awesome performance with an ATI card but if you bet the Nvdiia card will beat the ATI you will be taking chances there.

The 6800GT might be the exception since it is a full 16pipelines while the X800pro is 12. The 6800GT is the Ultra with lower clocks so why would someone buy the Ultra again? If I spend 500$ I'd buy the X800XT PE.

so.. which one?
Your pick. lol
Depends how much you want to pay and when you are buying.

D3 posted benchmarks a few days after it went gold.
If HL2 goes gold soon (early august) then maybe we will get benchmarks again. lol

A X800XT PE would be great! but it is also 500$ and hard to get.
A X800pro and 6800GT would be great for 400$. The 6800GT is also hard to find actually. The X800pro is the easiest to grab.
I wouldn't put money on a 6800Ultra at all.
For 200$ a 9800pro can't be beat for it's price.

Any of those will run HL2 + doom3 smoothly.

Best card for HL2 ?

Hmmmm , lets see.............................................................ace of diamonds?

looks like a 6800gt or X800XT PE, although my older brother basically is an nVidia fan-boy, so if i say lets get a X800XT PE hell say HELL NO! itll be hard to convince him

I want to see how well Nvidia's SLI will run hl2.
