Brian Damage said:What's wrong with a few pointers ?
Brian Damage said:Well, you make an interesting point. I never said you didn't. I personally don't agree, at least, not about the tedium, but it's interesting.
Pointers...
Well... this little fellow: "," (Forgotten his name. See? I don't even pretend to be in any way perfect)
... is your friend. Put him in your sentences wherever you'd take a breath or pause, if you were speaking the sentence out loud.
Capitalisation at the start of a sentence is good, but you can usually get away with not doing it on the net... the same goes for full-stops.
Your spelling's not bad, I'll grant you that... except for one thing... one, simple thing that everyone gets wrong...
It's Brian Damage :E.
Abom said:Thanks for the argument you two, not to mention that inspiring and educational lesson, Brian.
Any chance of getting back on topic, though?
Brian Damage said:Sure thing, Abby; I was about to, anyway...
I don't think it'd be tedious, at least not due to difficulty...
I have been wondering if the range of options might be kind of overwhelming, though, leading to a sort of "Toxic Option" syndrome, and... I dunno what to call it... Choice Paralysis?
Brian Damage said:It'd be interesting to see, after the release, if any players come on here asking for advice along the lines of "I've gotten to the thingamajig with the such-and-such, but now I can't decide whether to use the whosamajigger on the such and such, or use the dinglybob to jump the thingamajig"...
Stuck for choice...
Corupter said:Sorry Abom,
You could contribute if you like i always enjoy hearing what the mods have to say ?
Brian Damage said:I think the best way to deal with rising complexity with games like this is probably to regard them as being progressively closer to reality, and do what you would if the situation occured in real life. Then you can go back and try the other ways.
Abom said:Sure thing, I always love to contribute. The way I see it, Half-Life 2 will be a rollercoaster of a ride, just like its predecessor. Valve will have made sure that the key plot element is there, with more twists and turns than a drunken breakdancer. The physics are sure to add something to the mix; people will be inventing dozens of ways of ending Combine troops' lives (me included!).
Damnit, I just got myself all excited again. I want Half-Life 2 :hmph:
Corupter said:True but you can’t always do what you would initially do in real life, admittedly HL2 is more realistic than any game out at the moment but there will always be limitations restricting you to a certain action to defeat a certain foe.
Brian Damage said:You're right, I suppose I should have said "attempt to do what you would in real life".
I used to get stuck on things like this. Big decisions in games would make me shut down the game and wander off to think.
But then I discovered what a Quicksave was.
Letters said:Oh noes, all these options make the game TEDIOUS!
WTF?
Oh yes... it's the options that it make too hard so that people will die over and over, and that makes it tedious... leave out too many steps for you there?Corupter said:Let me assure you i meant tedious in the lightest way possible and in my origional first post i never said that the OPTIONS made it tedious, please read more carefully.
Thanks. :|Corupter said:I forgive you this time

Corupter said:well i'd say its more of a heated debate. And thats what i want in my threads if a poster cant feel that he can state his opinion and be listened to by the thread starter then theres no point in voicing an opinion. I try to make it my duty to reply to every post i get its good manners and im pleased that people post in this thread wither it be trying to be-little me or praise me either will do to be honest, preferably i'd prefer people to stick to a topic but my topics are always so hazy and confusing that sometimes thats impossible.
Alig said:No not really, a debate about punctuation and spelling with a title named "HL2- Completing It Going To Be A Tedious Task ?". :|
On topic. This game wont be to tedious to complete....give me one reason why it will be and not a 'because it has cars' malarky.Who here likes the repetative game : Painkiller? | You want HL2 to be like that? Where you know what you need to do on each level before you even start, Where nothing around you matters, thank you but no thank you, if i wanted to play a spiced up mobile phone game then i'd go buy Painkiller.
Corupter said:you have a point and I agree, I personally don’t want the game to be boring but as its in a league of its own and barely any people have experienced a game quite like it, there’s always a chance that because its so radically different and that you really don’t know what to do and the possibilities of what to do are endless it can get a bit, well I’m not sure how to but it best i guess exasperating thinking how to which bit best with what weaponry, it could in parts become so realistic that it actually is too hard to complete.
Alig said:I dont see what your worried about, from Valves background they are'nt business men/women as such, they are normal people like me and you (Erm, they came from the mod community themselfs) (or so i hear) where as a company would normally be 1) Cash 2) Game 3) Game maintanence (patches etc...) 4) Us, Basically what im saying is Valve are'nt so selfish, they reply to peoples queries and questions as if they care about us more than £35.
Darkside55 said:Personally, I welcome the difficulty that HL2 might provide. I'm hoping it isn't, "Scream and bash your keyboard repeatedly on the desk, howling like a monkey"-type difficulty, but I think it should pose a fair challenge.
And of cars and things, I think that does a lot less to reduce tedium. I know you meant tedium in the lightest sense of the word, as you put it, but the definition of tedium is repetitiveness; repeating the same thing over and over again. The fact that you've got options does a lot to lessen that. You could take the car, or you could walk on foot. At least you have an option of doing something differently, rather than being confined to a very strict and linear way of doing things. Like defeating a boss, or getting past an obstacle; I'm sure there are multiple ways to go about these types of things, and that's going to add to the overall replayability of the game.
Matter of fact, with the engine how it is, there might be one hundred different ways to handle a certain situation. Now I'm feeling that hype for the game again...
Also, for what it's worth, I found your posts easy enough to read. And it's a good topic.
Alig said:I dont think there is (should be) a gamer out there that could'nt get started on HL series, they are so thought through. You could probably give Half Life to your 'never played a game' Dad and they would probably turn overnight lol. I've got very high expectations of HL2 and im sure alot of people have too including Valve who have to live upto HL when there has been hundreds of FPS over the years trying to claim 'best FPS EVER!!' from HL, anyway i think this game will be the 3rd exciting/enjoyable FPS i'll play to date...HL then FarCry and then this and i dont mean that in order of how good i just mean...well you probably get me :bounce:
Corupter said:Yeh i guess so although i seriously doubt i could stick my dad infront of the computer and tell him to play Half Life 2 and he would take to it like a fish in water, more than likely after playing over night he'll be curled under the table rocking and saying "the combines are after me the combines are after me"
Alig said:That would be a picture.
DEATH eVADER said:I definately looking forward to the driving. From what I've seen is that you have inderpendent looking and steering. I can't stand games with "What you see-is where you drive"
I like to shoot enemies without my car turning to face them.
Terrible driving in action games:
Joint Ops
Halo
Good driving in action games:
Battlefield series
Unreal Tour 2004
