hl2 free?

HL was (and probably still is) selling 6 years after its release. Why on earth give it away for free?!

Uh, no. Abandonware usually doesn't become so until either the company goes under, or they stop selling it. Since HL2 is distributed mainly through a pay-to-download system, they probably will never stop selling it. So you're outta luck

I've seen HL1 for free after rebate. 20 dollars - 20 dollar rebate at Futureshop. I think that's the equivablent of Best Buy. Also a number of older games such as red alert, tribes 1, ground control, GTA2, and anarchy online are free now. (anarchy online is really only free for a year just to get more players)

Well rockstar games let you download GTA1 and GTA2 for free now...maybe valve will eventually do the same thing. When half life 10 is out :\ by then hl2 graphics will be obselete and we won't want to play it, just like GTA1 and GTA2.

It might eventually be free. It all depends on what Valve wants to do seven or eight years down the line.

I doubt it will be 'free' untill its totally obsolete.. if then. But VAVLe may just hand it out with purchases of future titles (like they gave out HL1 and the rest of the 'back catalog' with HL2 steam packages).

I think that's what he meant. Somehow I still doubt HL2 would be made available with the next game in the series, however- especially since HL3 will probably take less time to appear than HL2 did.

Of course no... and never they will. It cost them alot of money to create this one... there is no reason to just give it like a freeware to people...

Most likely you'll get HL2 wil the Silver Package of HL3. HL2 + HL3 seperately would only come to around £40 (at most), if they sell the Silver Package for somewhere in the region of £50 - £60 with extra things included (perhaps the HL2 expansion packs) it's very possible.
