HL2 megabytes?

I'm wonder how many megabytes will HL2 take, on how many CDs it will be shipped. Anyone knows the answer?
Maybe someone already asked Gabe about that? (ex.: "How many megabytes does HL2 take, when installed on your HDD, Gabe?" :)

Greets,
(sorry for mistakes, grammar - english isn't my native language...)

I hope it will be on DVD. I don't want a 5 CD release like UT2K4...

The question is how many gigs will it take?

yup, that's right DVD would be better IF the other choice would be 5cds...

2 CD's I reckon. About 1.5-2GB on full install. Just going with the current trend of HUGE install directories.

It's safe to assume it will at least require 700MB disk space : P

Guys, enter the matrix took 4 CDs and its very grap, HL2 with all this texture mmmmmmm, 5-6CDs.

A DVD version might be nice, but I don't think one will be released immediately. Maybe thats something we'll see in the collesctors edition. Personally I would rather have 5 cds on the 30th than 1 dvd a month later. It will probably only be 3 cds. I don't really mind how many cds it is as long as you only need one to play it!

I sware to god I remember reading 3 CD's, or 3 DVD's.. or maybe it was jusr a dream ;(

That was purely because of the DVD-quality videos. It took up about 4Gb because of that. Also bear in mind that one had a lot of levels because there were two different characters' stories to tell.

3 DVD's!? It's HL2, not Lord of the Rings...

The game files for enter the matrix equate to only just above 500mb... :)

Oh yes, true, but don't forget every HL2 level will take 3.5-4 hours with all the sounds effects+HDR+G that implemented in every level, anything is possible 5-6 CDs is very good estimation.

Man, its been a while since one of these threads. :D

I rekon 20mb the 15mb is just Ads :p

Seriously i think 2 - 3 :)

Haaaa...
I say: 2-3CDs
don't forget that HL2 will be available via Steam and downloading 5-6CDs isn't a very good idea...

It would be great if they did it like in Halflife -- That you don´t need any CD too play..

imagine downloading it from steam......

episodic content im guessing...

You don't! But there is the little problem of having to play through steam if you don't want to use the CD...

Hmm, high res. textures takes 15 - 50 MB (only ONE Texture) and maybe Hl2 has 250 Textures we are at 5000mb (only for the textures)

exactly, but don't forget the compression programs,

5000MB.........ZIP................3457MB.

And general optimization of the textures without losing much quality

.psd - 3.4 mb
.bmp - 2.3 mb
.jpg - 455 kb

If we get wad* its like this:

5000MP...........wad*............7545MB

They need several games within one as it has to be able to run on a tnt2

In UT 2003/04 they have different textures:

High Res: 3 GIG

Medium Res: 2 GIG

Low REs: 1 GIG

And that is all on the Game CDs...

There were 3 UT2k3 discs. I still think you're off because the way you put it, we may need to buy a new HD to be able to play it... :hmph:

humm no texture are 50 mb.. and a game have a LOT more than 250 texture !! You can add some Zero after your number of texture .. and for the size, remove one

Lol, so for an example a game like Chaser that was on one cd would only have like 4 diffrent textures in the hole game :D Maybe you should read up a bit about these things :)

I think I read somewhere that Gabe said HL2 will take about 1.3gb on the HD. That as a quick estimate is about 3-4 cds (Diablo II is about the same size at it's full install, and it was 3 cds, with 1 cd having nothing but cinematics).

Let's put it this way, a texture can have a maximum size of 2048x2048 (for the moment), for most textures there are 3 channels, diffuse, bump and specular. Of course, not all textures are 2kx2k, but for the geometry of the city, most will be. Characters will use 1024x1024 textures, some of these will use specular- and bumpmapping too.
3.5 gigs is a nice estimate I think, give or take 500 mb's.
Probably 3 cd's, and then the collectors edition will come with a DVD with the game and bonus stuff on that DVD. Well, atleast that's my theory.
I've already reserved a place for HL2 on my hdd

excuse meeeeeeeeeeeeeee....

you cannot compare chaser with HL2. m8.

chaser got 4T?

hah.

quake1 has more than 10T Iam not sure of the accurate Num. :dozey:

I doubt that.
I think there will be at MOST 3 cd's.
More like 2...

Hmm maybe you should read my post again.... I don´t say Chaser got 4 textures but if as previous stated one texture would be like 20-50 meg in size the game wouldent have rome for more than 4 textures on one cd. And of course you can´t compare hl2 with chaser but texture as texture neither of the games will have/has textures that takes 50 meg of space for each one, thats my point.

Lol, no what they really need is higher res textures. 1600x1200 at least I say. And normal mapped too. ;)
