Multiplayer Voice

I assume this feature will automatically be made avaialable in HL2 multiplayer. But does anyone know if the engine uses it in any new unique ways ?

I thought a good idea to make it more realistic, would be to have a higher quality voice stream encoded and sent only to players close to the player talking, ie. within listening distance. So in effect you would have to shout to someone far away.

Has anyone emailed gabe about this idea or the inclusion of multiplater Voice ?

Well.. I don't think HL2 DM needs it, what are you gonna use it for? Singing? BUT having it with TF2 would be great. Good idea by the way..

I don't want more idiots yelling over the mic. Just talk normally, and if the guy cant hear ya, move closer to him! (if this proximity sound thing is done)

Dont worry u guys people wont be voice spamming for quite a while

They will all be speachless about how ammazing the game is. :p

They should add 2 types of voices, team radio, only listened by your team, much like HL today, and then the proximity voice, like your character was actually speaking, just for shit & giggles. Imagine yelling at your enemies "Come and get some!", with the consequent amousement of the other people living in your house :D

That would be cool, someone should ask a person from VALVe that question.

:\. I Hope some mods do like different channels, kinda like in SOCOM on PS2. You could be on like attacking channel, etc. So maybe if a mod makes use of hotgroups or somethin (NS), they could have chat within the group and then within the whole team.

Hmmm, they will most likely keep the voice comm. the same since it works well now fro hl1 and its mods. why change a good thing?

I recall the old TF2 previews saying something abuot having squads, and per squad chat and voice. Most of those previews are deep in the 404 land, so i'm not even gonna start looking for a quote.

anyway, this can be done even in a hl1 mod, I'll quote gabe, "It's a design decision, not a technical limit".

Hehe voice-over technology so we atleast dont have to listen at those youngsters blurting out high pitch crap.l

Its pretty annoying that you cant choose between "Ignore voice" and "Ignore text". And only choose Ignore user.

well for HL1 the command for voice is.... +voiceRECORD... note the record part.. in HL2 they will use the facial system to animate what you are saying... in TF2 at least.... it works this way cause it records your voice then sends it so it works nicely.... there is a video of an uber old version of it on the TF2 site somewhere.... not sure if it is included in the HL2 voice tho (normal)

Hl1 was the testing grounds for HL2 features, they said this like three years ago

Tracker
VAC
STEAM
Voice

It was TF2 at the time, but source is source.

Also, the lyp-sinch technology is not real time, and the mouth movement along with voice record is implemented currently.

Right now it's just one bone, but I'm sure they'll have it look better in HL2.

And set voice_record_to_file 1 (or something like that) and it'll record :|

Multiplayer situation.

*This bad ass combine(other player) comes near you looking all angry and bad ass and you yell for his help since hes close enough.

You: Hey I need some help there are several enemies just down the street there.

*8 years old kid comes on over the mic sounding all girly.

Combine(other player): ok guy here i come.

That would ruin the image of a combine soldier for me :(

ROFL! Ever notice in CS, 98% of the people using mics sound like 12 year old girls on helium?

All gabe has said is that there will be higher quality audio codecs for voice comms in HL2.

And what is the deal with 12 year olds trying to rap over the mic everytime I play CS online (yeah I know it's my fault for playing CS...)

I hate the lil kids who use mic on CS... What kinda lil kid plays games that seriously... Shouldn't he be out throwing a football around or something. Kids today lol.

I really like the idea of a team voice comm that also has a proximity effect that non-team members can hear. Imagine, for instance, something like this working in Natural Selection, where aliens can spy on team chat signals by getting close enough to hear them without being seen.

Use way way-back-machine if you wanna look for sites that aren't hosted anymore :)

Way back when valve showed TF2 at E3 they were showing off the new voice communication they had already perfected for the game. You'd speak into your headset and your player in the game would lip synch your words and the closer you were the louder it was. I expect we will see this at the very LEAST in HL2 now.

I remember when I saw that in person it blew my mind. Gabe was giving an impromptu interview at the time to a some press member passerby and I totally distracted him because I was so excited by it that I couldn't stop my lips from flapping. <blush> I finally realized I was being rude and interupting him and restrained myself. Oops.

This was supposed to be something the spy could do in TF2. If you were in close-enough proximity to an enemy, you could hear them chatting with other squad members/the commander. There's a feature like this for the spy implemented in Neo-TF, if anyone wants to check out what it might be like.

 same here, funny because its true, it always puts me off when they sound like 12 year old girls, because i'm laughing like mad!

Proximity Voice was planned for TF2, so I'm sure HL2 will have such capability. And like said above, they will be using better codecs so the quality will be much higher. And also considering that TF2 had real-time voice sync(It was more complex than HL1's facial animation), I'm sure that will be in there too. I have the 4 old TF2 movies... Although its running on the modified HL engine, you can see a lot of the neat stuff they did with animations and such. I don't have any webhosting anymore tho :[

Edit: The spy feature wasn't a "proximity" thing- the idea was that the spy could intercept the other team's voice comms. Like the "radio" voice comms. There was that, and then there was proximity voice, where your voice would eminate from your player model, not a global "radio" or whatever. So if you whispered to your teammates someone in the other room wouldn't hear you :p

Cool, first thread I started here now has 26 replies ! I like this forum ...

Here's another idea. If for example some 12 yr old kid does come on and speak in a high pitched voice the source engine could give you 2 options :

1) mute the player
2) perform an audio transform on the codec for this player, distorting his voice to sound more like a combine soldier, eg. like a 'robotic over radio' voice or more some other more approriate sound.

Matt :bounce:

i think xbox live can morph the voice to make it sound male, female, whatever; not 100% sure because i dont have an xbox, but i remember seeing it in a review, so i guess it wouldnt be something too challenging to put in as an option for multiplayer

Yes xbox can change their voice. They're called voice masks. Theres one that makes your voice sound really really deep. But when the 8 year olds use it they sound like a normal person lol. But then they added several voice masks such as ones that make you sound like a robot, like you're on helium, like you have a girly voice(when the little kids use that everyone goes deaf its so high, i have to take off my head set) and etc. Tehy have like a total of 15 voice maks or so.

Edit: It lags the game really bad when people use them. So most servers kick people that use them.

Slash, thanks for the correction. I could've sworn it had something to do with radios, but I haven't read TF2 info in so long I thought I must've been mistaken. I guess I confused the spy ability and the proximity chat with each other.

About voice masks; just picture this in HL2.

I tried playing some HLDM the other day, everything was going good when I spotted this nasty crossbow camper on bounce.

So I killed him, and for the next 10 minutes I had some crazy french guy screaming "you mother****er!! I will kill you!!" to me. Of course with that funny french accent.

. You'd speak into your headset and your player in the game would lip synch your words and the closer you were the louder it was.

Sounds sweet. Though i got the sense that the current "really good" lip-synching they have now requires some non-real time stuff, like typing in the phenomes and then parsing a wave file.
