Has there been a specific date for the release of hl2? Dates i've seen so far range from november sometime to feb 2nd

Welcome to the forums :)

It's looking like late November at this time but nothing has been confirmed.

Only one specific date has ever been mentioned: September 30th, 2003.

All other dates have been pure speculation. As of this point, no official release date exists.

My god this sucks. I'm trying to lock down a day. I own a lan center and i have hoards of cs junkies banging on my door..lol.

And thank you for the welcome!

You could satisfy the CS junkies with CS:Source surely? Don't cybercafes get that?

That is the real deal.

Assuming you mean HL2 single player (the whole cs junkies reference), no date as already posted but looks like soon. Please god.

Ok, maybe i'm reading valve's info wrong. What is the diff. between cs and cs:source?

CS:Source is a conversion of CS into Half Life 2's Source engine.

It's CS with MUCH improved graphics, physics, lighting, etc.

CS:S is cs 1.6 (apparently) ported onto the HL2 engine. Real physics, new netcode, improved graphics.
But yeah, buy HL2 and play CS:S now. Not a cut-down version.

so will there be another version of cs when hl2 is released?

An update to cs? I have no idea. An update to CS:S? Well, I suppose there might be. New maps etc. But the CS:S that people are playing now is not a cut down version.

I doubt it. The original non-Source CS is the past and CS:S is the future - no reason to visit something that hardly anyone would want to play now anyway.

Not in the sense you are thinking of it. CS:S IS HL2 Multiplayer. The CS:S that is out now is considered to be the 1.0 version of the game.

However, as with any game, there will be updates to CS:S. Hope this clears things up.

So cs:s is just 1.6 updated to the hl2 engine. I take it there are new maps and weapons? please excuse my noobness.

I'm not a CS fan boi, but I think pirinessi is a new map. Don't think any weapons are new. But 'd reccomend getting it just so you can be hit in the face by a flash-bang. I still love it.

no new maps ... no new weapons ... just new engine and graphics are slick

In the opinion of you guys, who are obviously CS vets...would you say that cs:s is better than 1.6? Do you think it will have the longevity of 1.5 or 1.6?

I mean, all other versions of CS are now essentially dead - there is no reason to support them anymore. So by default, CS:S will have longevity. Once you've seen CS:S, you just can't go back to non-Source CS.

no offence JuggerNaught but for someone who owns a lan centre, with CS being the most played multiplayer game and CS:S being the new biggest thing on the block, you don't know much about the industry!

I would say CS:S is better than CS aslong as you have a good PC. But on the whole yes it is. Much better.

He doesn't have to know about the games, just how to setup and maintain a lan. Anything comes along I'm sure the regulars are whining about running it soon enough.

None taken. HalfLife and CS of course are hated in the lan center communities...so i havent really been interested in knowing about them until lately.

Valve has a vendetta against lan centers and has outrageous demands on licensing for us.

Quite honestly..I dont really care for hl or cs and steam is probably the biggest mess i've ever seen in my life. It causes more trouble and headaches for lan centers than anything known to man. But the gang in my area likes it, and my state (florida) is actually pretty big on CS....so I thought I might bite the bullet, and adhere to valves draconian set of rules and get cs:s

Well I have to know a bit about gaming overall, and games that are coming out and trends.

For instance, when doom3 came out...I passed on buying it for my place. I knew with a 4 person multiplayer it would be worthless to me and I placed my bet that doom3 would last a whole 3-4 months and then go disappear off the map..which it has. Many lan center owners invested in doom3 and the upgrades they needed because it was the 'next big thing' now they have upgraded machines and in some cases 1500-2000 worth of software that has been played a whole 1 time and they will never recoup that investment. So those kinds of things i need to watch for.

I think that cs will be cs. 1.5 still had an estimated 50k people playing when they shut down the servers in august, 1.6 has a very strong following still, and i think hl2 will just bump that even more. I think this game will probably be big for the next 2-3 years, if not longer once the map makers get their paws on the new engine to make fresh new map packs...so the likelyhood of it being worth the investment is very good.
