I found this in the HLFallout.com forum

i just spoke with valve employee Greg Coumer, he said hl2 will be "released via steam on 10/20/04, due to a recent agreement with VU." it will be in the steampowered.com news section in 2 days, they want it to be sorta a suprise i guess. the retail will ship nov 3 if im remembering correctly. hl2 is near! joy!


i asked if i could post this he said it probably wouldent be a good idea, but it doesent really matter

Greg Coumer? Who the **** is that?

I know there's a guy called Greg Coomer that works at ValVe but this Greg Coumer could be anyone!
 
Well, that is good news..if it's true that is. Nov 3rd, eh? Maybe they DO think of the players afterall.
 
I think that guy made a typo. Anyway, we'll find out if it's true in 2 days time.

I live in Seattle quite near to the Valve Offices, some days ago i asked whether I am allowed to pay them a visit.
Arriving there I had a little chat with Gabe Newel and he said they gonna make the gold announcement on Monday Oct. 18th. And Half-Life 2 will be released in early November, depending on how fast CD production goes.

Yep, they want it so much of a surprise that they're going to tell one Half-Life 2 community member in hope that he won't spoil the surprise for everyone.

Not only that but the guy has spelt his name wrong, not only that but the game isn't gold yet, not only that but Greg Coomer wouldn't give out a release date as that tends to be Gabe's and Doug's jurisdiction and if that wasn't enough - we already know that Valve cannot sell Half-Life 2 on Steam until it's in the shops.

Ooops, looks like a fake :|

bolded part..does that not what they started doing last week? selling it on steam?
 
That was counter strike:source.

edit: actually they sold packages, including hl2. But technically they are not allowed to distribute hl2 before it's in the shops. CS:S is allowed to be distributed before that.

I'll rephrase:

Valve aren't allowed to release Half-Life 2 on Steam until it's in the shops. At this moment in time, Valve aren't doing anything that Vivendi isn't. They're accepting pre-orders for Half-Life 2, just as Vivendi has for nearly 2 years.

But haven't they *kinda* already released it? I mean, the've preloaded it...that would be releasing some code, or part, of HL2, is it not? And has it not garnered them sales?

Is your pre-load of HL2 in a playable form...?

No.

I also believe that once you register the game through steam you will receive a final small piece of data to download in order to play the game. And I'm not talking about just the authentication / decryption data, I mean some small file vital for the game to run.

I totally agree with you spugmaster, but i have a working game on my machine that i didn't have a few days ago. Playing this game, the multiplayer portion of HL2, is part of HL2 that was distributed and sold as part of HL2. They've released the multiplayer over steam, before retail. HL2 multiplayer! It's HL2! Only half, but still HL2!
