How feasible is an RPG mod? And if so, would anyone be willing to help me try?

Its perfectly possible. Wheter you'd make it 3rd person or 1st person is up to you. And idk if its possible to go from a world map to a battle system turned based mode. Maybe someone with more knowledge of sources capabilities can answer your question more thoroughly.

There was a RPG in progress called Lost Kingdoms earlier, although they cancelled the whole RPG thing and decided to do something else with what they had done, because Half-Life 2 doesn't run smoothly with the number of NPC's they needed to have in the same areas. They said that maybe they could do it later on(as in, a year and a half or so), I assume they thought so because HL2 will be optimised successively and computers will be more powerful.

Techincal problems
yeah if you think about it, the network stress would be tremendous if you wanted to have a reasonable number of
npc's and human players + graphics of hl2 = huge lag
one solution might be ingame advertising, for server hosts and such,....not sure about that
instanced zones, and different load zones would help...
if you havent already, play hl2land's rp server on gmod10 its an intesting mod that i think is a good idea of what and hl2 rpg should look like
