Have you looked into this at all? Any idea how fast EA (biggest and most efficient publisher out there) can ship games at the very fastest they can manage?

Same question to you. It's been stated many a time that a CD-pressing plant can press one CD in about three seconds, on average.
Let's say 4 CDs for HL2, that's 12 seconds per copy... Add into the equation many CD-pressing machines in many CD-pressing plants worldwide and that's quite a few copies in the same 12 seconds.
Bear in mind boxes and manuals will have been finalised AND printed by now.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but vivendi are making the thing, they have manufacturing plants all over the world, I dont think it would take more than 3 days for them to bounce ISOs and boxart around FTPs to their plants and get them made up and trucked out to shops. They don't need shipping across any oceans etc.

Gold announcements today or tomorrow anyhoo.

The Gabe said HL2 will hit shops and Steam at the SAME TIME. It's safe to say if its not precacheing on steam by the 25th we'll be in for a bit of a delay.

No matter how well anticipated this game is, it will not sell one million copies in the first 2 weeks. I doubt it'll sell one million in the first month. And certainly not in the same country/region of country. And that's where mulitple CD-pressing factories come into play.

I think he said one week before release, not today. Today was just Spit's guess.
