Well I see all these people enthused about how HL3 would look like, and when I think about it... would they really make a new engine for HL3? I believe they will just use the source engine... maybe pushing it to its farthest capabilities. I mean valve said it themselves, they will never spend that much time on a game again.

So what are everyone else's thoughts on this?

I think they'll use Source, didn't spend six years perfecting it for one game and it's expansions/mods. maybe it's just hope speaking, I don't want to wait for them to make another engine for Half-Life 3...

yea, they can enhance the engine because of its design, if new graphics technology comes along it will be easy to add it to the engine. they could even release patches for hl2 which incorporated new graphics technologies forseably.

Source was made for being able to edit very easy.
They would not put a few million into an engine and 3 years of work for 1 game. Trust me they will update is shading and graphic and there ya go! Infact im not even sure you need to upgrade the graphic engine. Source has no set polygon count for its max. Thus the modeling is just as good as the maker. Thus you really only must upgrade the shading\lighting.

They wouldn't push it to its limits. By the time HL3 is released, it will still be made for as many people as possible to use....

yea, update the lighting, actually, the shadowing more then anything, and bump up the polycounts (They made this game work TOO far back IMHO) and you have a kickass looking game.

and they DID say source was easily modifyable. if they add in realtime shadowing, then well...wow. :D

Well, even now, HL2 will gain a new lease of life when/if I pump up my computer- extra ram, better graphics card, etc., etc.... I don't think we're that close to the game's limits just yet. With more optimisation and a few tweaks, it'll be a whole new game (I'd have thought).

They built Source with longevity in mind, it's extremely easy to customize and update.

Half-Life 3 will still look uber and won't use the limits of the engine - it's built with extremely far away advances in mind (256 player servers!!)

I agree with sublidieminal. The will probably use Source and either push it to the limits, or enhance Source in some way. W/e they do, HL3 will kick ass.

They said , the next Halflife game will be on a heavily modified version of the source engine, incorporating everything they didnt get time to put into HL2. It will be the same engine sure, but in the next 3 years it will be hard to recognise with the things they have in mind. mark my words.

Most likely it will be just like what Epic does with the Unreal engine. Every time they make a new game, they will make a new engine. Unreal Tournament had the Unreal 1 engine, Unreal Tournament 2003-4 had the Unreal 2 engine, and Unreal 3 will use the Unreal 3 engine. Epic just updates the engine every time. I'm pretty sure they have been using the same engine all along, just re-writing most of it for new technology.

They said it took 18 months to make the Unreal 3 engine out of the previous Unreal 2 engine. So, Valve will probably do something similar and call it Source 2 or something like that. It won't take them more than 18 months to drastically improve the Source engine when they make HL3. :)
